This path will take you to the edge of the cliff, following the curves of the relief. This magnificent tour immerses you in the heart of the remarkable Cirque de Navacelles and its founding river, the Vis. An initial detour takes in the Causse de Blandas and the pleasant Bois de Fontaret, but as soon as you pass the Calo Rouge clearing, you're plunged into the mineral world of the famous canyon, all the way to the unusual resurgence of La Foux and its assortment of recently renovated ancestral mills. All that's left to do is follow the right bank of the winding Vis, and let yourself flow to the charming hamlet of Navacelles. But as soon as you've crossed the picturesque Romanesque bridge, you have to tackle the old road cut into the stone to climb back up to the plateau. The final slopes are formidable!

A short circuit that can be used as an introduction to trail running and to the Causse de Blandas and Cirque de Navacelles. The route first rises above the village and soon reaches the edge of the Bois de Fontaret, which it crosses on pleasant paths under the conifers.

Explore the impressive Cévenol railway network with its tunnels and giant viaducts. Signposts will guide you all along this route. In the description below, the signposted place names and/or directions are given in bold italics between quotation marks: Starting at  “ALZON", follow "Sous la Vierge". From here, optional there-and-back to the statue of the Virgin Mary. Continue towards "Rocamousse", Then "Passerelle de la Vis" and "Les Lauriers".  Then walk to “Valcroze” via “Chemin de Gleize”. From ridge to forest, col (pass) to col, this trail brings the hiker into contact with a great variety of environments and offers uninterrupted panoramic views onto the Arre valley, the Causse de Blandas, the Anjeau mountains and the Trude massif. Walk along the D 189 towards Peyraube. About 50 m after the disused railway bridge, fork left. Take the stone path for 100 m, to a road. Cross it and head towards Blanquefort. Once you are on the D 189, turn left and walk to the sign for Peyraube. As you enter Peyraude, fork left onto a tarred lane that goes uphill and, at the first house, leave this lane to take a track on the left towards Bonnels farm. As you leave Bonnels, the path goes uphill among broom to the Col des Airettes (altitude 970 m). Take a forestry track on the right to the Col des Tempêtes (997 m). There, go right on the Cazebonne road that leads to the Col de l'Homme-Mort. At the second crossroads, turn right to reach the Barrière road. At the sign for La Condamine, walk downhill on the forestry track on the right for 100 m and go through the fence. Take a path through the broom heath on your left heading for Le Garel brook (i.e. westwards), so as to bypass the ridge on its left. After 200 m, you reach a calade (paved track). This skirts Les Ramasses on the left and takes you straight to the ruins of Le Garel. Head back towards the ridge to reach the Rocher de Saint-Peyre. From there, the path zigzags downhill to the ridge that separates Arrigas from Aumessas. It leads to a track, with Peyraube and Blanquefort on the right, and arrives in a landscape of well-maintained fields. Continue between two box hedges. Go straight downhill to Arrigas. The path cuts across the D 189 twice before ending in the village.

Château de Vissec is located in the commune of the same name in the Gard department, 25 km southwest of Le Vigan. Located upstream from the cirque de Navacelles and at the crossroads of the Larzac, Campestre and Blandas limestone plateaus, the site was first mentioned in the 10th century. A defensive castle is attested in the 13th century. The local lords were powerful, and the land became a barony. During the Wars of Religion, part of the seigneury remained faithful to Catholicism, while Christophe de Montfaucon, Baron de Vissec, rallied to Calvinism. In 1628, the Duke of Rohan ordered the castle razed to the ground. The ramparts were demolished, but it was not until 1656 that the main elements of the medieval edifice were actually destroyed. The de Montfaucon family soon had a more residential château rebuilt on part of the previous foundations. Vaulted ceilings have been preserved (kitchen, stables), as have features such as doors and an Italian staircase. As a result, today's château presents a contrasting appearance. On the main floor, in what was once the guards' quarters, there is a large Gothic-style stucco fireplace (above the former kitchen), French ceilings and traces of wall paintings and inscriptions. The rectangular portal is highlighted by mouldings simulating capitals. The interior structure remains unchanged. On the first floor, the salon retains historiated panels (landscapes with church, boat, house) separated by garlands of fruit. However, the layout of the rooms has been revised. Both the present building and the ruins of its predecessor, the Castellas, are protected historic monuments.

The site is just incredible. The Vis gushes down from the cliffs with impressive force. You can visit the old mills at your leisure, and admire the waterfalls from different angles as you scramble over the rocks. The further we descend, the more the vegetation changes and we appreciate the freshness of the cedars of Lebanon. As we approach the river, the freshness intensifies, the trees are more vigorous and there are even ferns. Suddenly, with a roar, the screw emerges from the bowels of the mountain. The abundant flow kept the mills, destroyed several times by flooding and then rebuilt, in operation until the early 20th century. It is said that in 1870, the millers had to take refuge on the roofs. An umpteenth flood in 1907 led to the definitive abandonment of the mills, until their restoration in 2000 as part of the Opération Grand Site du Cirque de Navacelles.

The pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) is widespread in the areas of the south of France. Its leaves are hairy on their underside, which is an adaptation to drought (the hairs limit evaporation and retain moisture). The first notes about windmills appear in England and France at the end of the 12th century. They were much developed in the early 13th century and stopped turning at the end of the 19th century without any exception. In La Couvertoirade, there were two windmills, one disappeared but was mentioned in the 17th century in a place called “the Cross of wind”, the other still dominates the city at Redounel. “Le Moulin de Redounel”: altitude: 808 m, outer diameter: 5.56 m, height 6.60 m, thickness of walls: 1.08 m. It is made up of one of the only remains of windmills in South Aveyron, among the 60 windmills known in Aveyron. The lavogne and the tank have a dual function, vital to the plateau. The lavogne is a pond developed on the clay funds, impervious to water. It is often paved with stones to prevent gully erosion that cause trampling of sheep flocs came to drink it. The cistern collects rainwater and stores. The Templar castle was built in the late twelfth century on the rocky outcrop of the village. Until the construction of the walls in the fifteenth century, its mission was to protect the villagers in case of attack, evidenced by its barbican, this primitive enclosure, as well as the remains of a gatehouse, located above the front door. The present church has replaced the old parish church of the 11th century, situated outside the village. This new building, partly carved into the rock in the 14th century will attend the final constitution of a village.During construction of the walls in the 15th century, the church flat chevet will be a complete portion of the wall. This oven owes its name to the tax people had to pay for using it: this tax was called “la banalité”. Built in the 15th century by the Hospitallers and restored in 2000s. Today, it works and batches are regularly made by the village baker.

La Couvertoirade preserves all its walls, built in the mid-fifteenth century. As early as 1346, robbers called "routiers" plunder the Larzac. Because of fear of the armed gangs, villagers were asking in 1439 the permission to fortify the village. The construction continued until 1445 under the direction of master mason Déodat d'Alaus.This wall of 420 m long and 1.30 m of thickness is pierced by arrow slits and is surmounted by a walkway.Sources: Information Office of La Couvertoirade.

Gîte d'étape in the heart of the Cévennes National Park, south of Mont Aigoual, between Cévennes peaks and valleys, an immense wilderness awaits you. On foot, by bike, by motorcycle...for a stopover or a holiday, you're welcome at mas Corbières. This typical Cévennes mid-mountain hamlet is perched at 600 meters altitude, at the end of the Notre Dame de la Rouvière valley, in the Cévennes National Park, classified in 2018 as an international starry sky reserve. It offers a 180° south-facing view, terraced meadows inviting you to relax, a river for swimming, and a wide variety of hiking trails. Antoine and Gabrielle have been welcoming you here for 30 years. Both mountain guides, they can advise you on your hiking projects, family reunions, artist residencies and training courses. You can enjoy the nearby river, or rent a pack donkey for a day or more, and take a guided hike. Mas Corbières is a calm, enchanting place in the heart of nature, ideal for a change of scenery, a recharge of batteries and a creative outlet.

Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Ideally located, we open our house for a stopover on a hike or a longer stay, a weekend with family or friends. We look forward to welcoming you. Our table d'hôtes is available on reservation, as are products from the chestnut grove. Guided walks available. In summer, there's a supervised lake in the village and river swimming nearby.

In the heart of the historic Cévennes, l'Amorié is nestled in one of the many folds of the Cévennes mountains. The reception is done in an authentic hamlet with an architecture preserved for more than three centuries. This exceptional location allows for numerous nature activities all year round. The buildings can accommodate 28 people: 6 rooms from 2 to 6 single beds (including 10 bunk beds), living spaces open onto large covered terraces, a dining room and a sanitary block inside. The Association Départementale des Francas du Gard was created more than 60 years ago. It is a popular education movement, an association that complements the public and secular school system. It brings together men and women who work on a daily basis to bring to life the national project "With children and young people, together for education! It develops a program of interventions in favor of associations and communities that organize leisure, educational, social or cultural activities for the inhabitants of the department. Today, it federates a network of about 60 municipalities and 25 associations. With its traditional tractor ride in summer for the children, the family atmosphere and the good mood of the place make it a tasty and memorable moment! The swimming will delight young and old with its direct access to the river which is quite hot in summer! Le Petit Baigneur welcomes you in tent, caravan and camper, but with your own equipment. There are no mobile homes or chalets available for rent. Equipment: bowling alley, games for children, table tennis, collective barbecue table tennis, collective barbecue, private parking, electric hook-up, services for services for motor homes... Comfort elements: internet access, view and direct access to the river river, refrigerated lockers or small fridges for rent.

This comfortable, functional and friendly gîte is remarkably well suited to the needs of hikers in the new millennium. The preservation of the old buildings has created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while respecting the architectural authenticity and rich history of the area. Lime rendering and the use of chestnut wood blend perfectly with the original stone. The garden offers a variety of relaxation areas for a well-deserved rest. Situated on the edge of the GR70 and very close to the GR61, 'Le Pré de Modestine' is the ideal place to enjoy the end of Stevenson's route, or to organize hikes to discover the Cévennes. The gîte is located 1 km upstream from Saint Jean du Gard.
