Exploring the wonders of Mions, Rhône, Rhône-Alpes

Circuit that lets you discover the château and medieval chapel of Illins, as well as the "Colombier" pear brandy distillery, while offering views of the Alps and Mont Blanc. DETAILED ITINERARY 1 - START - Villette-de-Vienne - From the start sign, turn left onto Rue des Serventières. - At the Villette de Vienne signpost, follow the signs for Chuzelle on the left until you reach Cugnet, then continue left until you reach the Morand signpost. 2 - TOWARDS BONNETIÈRE - Turn right towards Bonnetière. - At the Chemin des Vignes junction, take the path on the left until you reach a road. - Follow the road on the left to the Bonnetière signpost, then continue right to the Taillis de Mure signpost. 3 - TOWARDS MARENNES - Continue straight ahead on the track towards Marennes, cross the D150A and take the track opposite. - When you reach a small road, turn left, pass the Bois des Fauries signpost and continue to the Le Coin signpost. 4 - BOIS DE THOLOMÉ AND LA PLATIÈRE - Turn right towards Bois de Tholomé, pass the signpost and continue towards La Platière. - Pass through the houses, turn left then right at the crossroads. 5 - VILLENEUVE AND ILLINS - In Villeneuve, cross the hamlet in a straight line, then turn right into the cul-de-sac. - At the Illins signpost, continue right towards Villette de Vienne. - Cross the hamlet on the left, then turn right at the chapel. 6 - CHÂTEAU D'ILLINS & RETURN - Follow the road to the château farm on the hillside. - Take the track on the left, pass in front of the Château d'Illins, then descend to the Les Brigands signpost. - Continue to the Cugnet signpost and return to the starting point via the same route.

Nature and heritage walk When you return from the hike, take a break in the Parc du Grand Clos, an unsuspected bubble of nature to recharge your batteries at the foot of the trees, read a book, play hide-and-seek, play ball… Before joining the park, stop off in the centre of the village to discover its heritage. Its history is presented on lava plates: —The very beautiful Romanesque-style church listed. It is dedicated to Saint Mayol, 4th abbot of Cluny, founder of the 10th century of the priory of Saint-Pierre de Ternay. —The terraced gardens of the Château de La Porte adorned with a restored nymphaeum and containing a Gallo-Roman sarcophagus from the 2nd century. Hike in the fresh air during the July 14 festivities while prolonging the evening under the stars in the castle grounds. The 16th-century building and the Saint Mayol church serve as the foreground for the fireworks show.

The wine producers of the Coteaux du Lyonnais area have organised information boards relating to their work which consists in maintaining the vines and developing their wine. A trail await you for an outing which promises to be both instructive and fun. You will find information on wine trails in the local tourist information offices (leaflet and information boards only in French).

From Vienne, the ancient capital of Roman Gaul, to the Île du Beurre nature reserve, witness to the wild Rhône, via the terraced vineyards, including the prestigious Côte-Rôtie, and the first orchards of the Rhône Valley. Lovers of nature, history and gastronomy will be delighted. Greenway all the way except the entrance to Sablons.

Explore the countryside around Vienne, with its wooded trails and green paths. Several viewpoints offer panoramic views stretching from Pilat to the Alps, to the south of the route. Hike around Vienne - Main route and alternative route (10.5 km) Points of interest: Montléans tower, cup-marked stone. Caution: crossing busy roads, particularly the RD502 between stages 4 and 7. MAIN ROUTE: 1 - START - CAR PARK - Follow the path along the stadium. - Cross the Combaudon woods (follow the signs carefully). - When you reach the buildings, take the stairs on the right, then turn left to cross a park and reach a roundabout. - Go to the castle car park and the ‘le Château’ signpost. 2 - TOWARDS PIN ROND - At the end of the car park, go down the path towards ‘Pin Rond’. - Cross the D41b and wade across the Suze stream. - Climb up the other side, then take a farm track to the hamlet of Chez Meunier, crossing it and ignoring the side roads. - After an intersection and a right-hand bend, take the track on the left. 3 - TRACKS AND FIELDS - Leave the road and follow the track across the fields. - Cross a small road and continue straight ahead. - Reach the ‘Pin Rond’ junction. 4 - DESCENT TOWARDS LA SUZE - Go down the road and cross the D538. - Follow the road that leads to La Suze. - After the bridge, turn right onto Chemin de la Suze (approx. 1.6 km) and climb up to the ‘Le Coin’ fork. ALTERNATIVE ROUTE - 10.5 KM LOOP (yellow markings) 5 - CHEMIN DES FRÊNES - Turn left, cross the D167 and pass a farm. - Continue on the path on the right until you reach the hamlet of Le Coin. - Follow the road that turns left until you reach the signpost marked ‘La Cure’. 6 - CHEMIN DU FERRAT - Take the road on the right to the end, then continue on the track that climbs towards Le Télégraphe. 7 - HAMLETS AND LOCAL ROADS - In the hamlet, turn right onto Chemin du Château d'Eau. - Cross the D46, then turn right onto the Vossère road which leads to the hamlet. - Continue along the road running alongside the orchards. 8 - RETURN TO THE STADIUM - At the start of a left-hand bend, leave the road and take a path on the right leading down to a housing estate. - Continue straight on to the D538, cross it, then take a lane on the left along a boundary wall. - At an electricity substation, turn right onto a road leading to a path near an old farm. - You will come to a road that descends in a wide bend. Before a bridge, take the cul-de-sac on the right, which leads to a track that joins the stadium.

This walk in the historical centre of Vienne lets you discover the town’s main sites. Passing along the Pipet belvedere involves a good climb, but offers a splendid view of the town, the Rhône Valley and the Pilat. Duration: approximately 3-4 hours Difficulty: easy to moderate, some uphill sections Starting point: Vienne railway station DETAILED ITINERARY: 1 - HISTORICAL CENTRE AND SAINT-MAURICE CATHEDRAL - From the station, take Cours Brillier (left-hand pavement) past the post office to Cours de Verdun / Place des Allobroges. - Turn left and cross diagonally across the central reservation to enter the public gardens. - Opposite you, admire the statue of Michel Servet (1515-1553). Go around to the left to see a well-preserved section of Roman road. - Exit and return to Cours Brillier, then cross over to Rue Boson, which leads to the foot of the steps of Saint-Maurice Cathedral. - Climb the stairs and visit the cathedral. The interior, simple but elegant, is well worth a visit. - Exit and head towards the Rhône via Place Saint-Maurice. 2 - CROSSING THE RHÔNE AND GALLO-ROMAN SITE - Cross the river on the footbridge to Sainte-Colombe. - At the end of the footbridge, take the stairs on the left to reach Quai d'Herbouville, then continue north. - Pass the Tour des Valois, then climb the pedestrian ramp on the left near the nautical stadium until you reach a large car park. - Go under the road via a pedestrian tunnel, then immediately climb the stairs on the right to visit the Gallo-Roman site. - Opposite, the Gallo-Roman museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal is recommended, especially with children. - Cross the Rhône again and head to Place du Jeu de Paume, opposite Saint-André-le-Bas Church. 3 - TEMPLE OF AUGUSTUS AND LIVIA AND RENAISSANCE STREETS - Go up the stairs on the left and walk around the church. - Take Rue des Clercs (sign: Temple of Augustus and Livia). - Behind the façades, take a look at the Renaissance courtyards, some of which are protected by digital locks. - Arrive at Place du Général de Gaulle, where the Temple of Augustus and Livia is located. - Enjoy the atmosphere of the square, the café terraces and the old bookshop. - Continue along Rue de la Chaîne, which leads to Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, then turn right onto Rue des Orfèvres. - Pass Place du Pilori and its Roman ruins, then head towards the Théâtre de Vienne. 4 - ANCIENT THEATRE AND CLIMB TO PIPET - Cross Rue Victor Hugo, then take Montée Saint-Marcel. - Pass Rue des Célestes and a short staircase that leads to Rue du Cirque, which leads to the Ancient Theatre. - At the stop sign, take Rue de Pipet. The climb is steep, so take your time. - On the left is the huge Pipet cemetery; there is a bench where you can take a break. - Take the first street on the right to reach the Belvédère de Pipet. 5 - BELVÉDÈRE DE PIPET AND PANORAMA - From the esplanade, enjoy an exceptional view of Vienne, the Rhône valley, Pilat and the Monts du Lyonnais. - Return to Rue de Pipet, then take Chemin des Amoureux (be careful, it's discreet): a slight climb followed by a steep descent to Montée Saint-Marcel. - Cross over and continue along Montée des Tupinières, then Montée Réaumur (downhill). - Follow the streets to the Montée de Coupe Jarret, cross Rue Victor Hugo, then take the second street on the right (Rue Peyron). 6 - RETURN TO THE STATION - Come out onto Place de Miremont, turn left, then left again onto Cours Romestang with its tree-lined central avenue, which leads back to the station.

Take your family on a journey of discovery through the foothills of Pilat, along the banks of the Rhône. This route alternates between woodland paths and old orchards, offering superb panoramic views of the Monts du Lyonnais. DETAILED ITINERARY: - From the car park, head down the D502 towards Vienne. After the farm, turn right onto the track below the road. Join the D502 at a bend, then head down the track on the right. This leads to a road near a house. Cross the hamlet and rejoin the D502; follow it to the right for a few metres. - Turn right onto Chemin du Bataillard, which offers a beautiful view of the Alps and Pilat. The track crosses the plateau, descends into the Vézerance valley, crosses the stream and then climbs up the opposite slope. It joins a road which you follow to the right for about 1.6 km, passing two roads on the left. After a bend, at the hamlet of Madinière, look for a path starting on the left. - Take this path, which climbs to the summit of La Peaume. - At the edge of the woods, turn right onto the track and continue to a flat area. Continue to the right on the path, which descends to the Grisard car park.

Discover the foothills of Pilat on the banks of the Rhône with this family loop: alternating undergrowth and old orchards, as well as beautiful views of the Monts du Lyonnais. -> From the car park, follow the trail on the ridge until the first junction. -> Continue straight ahead to the edge of the wood. The trail then turns right and passes a series of pylons. In the wood, stay on the main path at the different junctions and then go down along a field (view of the Alps, Vienne and Lyon). Join a road at Croix du Pont. -> Go straight ahead on the road (Chemin de la Manche). After 600 m, the road turns left and reaches a farm. After the buildings, go down to the left on the steep track for about 300 m. -> Don’t miss the path on the left at the first junction. Continue on the balcony above the Siffet stream. The trail goes into the undergrowth and descends to the road at the stream. Take the road to the left for a few metres. -> Turn left into the small valley on a path that crosses a stream and climbs the hillside. It then turns left. Continue the climb less steeply on a trail. Cross a road and take the path in front of you until you reach a junction with a track; take it to the right and join the outbound path. ->Return to the Grisard car park.

In the south-west of the Balcons du Dauphiné, between hills and ponds, Panossas stands out for its beautiful red hues, a phenomenon that can be explained by the rich iron content of the limestone, which is found in the various architectural features. The village then gives way to a variety of landscapes, from undergrowth to panoramic views over the Isle-Crémieu, as you make your way along this hilly walking route.

Set off on a stroll through the prestigious vineyards of Côte-Rôtie, with the majestic Rhône River providing a spectacular backdrop. A hike through the vineyards DETAILED ITINERARY: 1 - START - Follow the road down towards Tartaras. After 100 m, take the dirt track on the left. - Cross the stream, go through the valley and then climb up to the left to reach the Tartaras plateau. 2 - HAMLET OF TARTARAS - In the village, turn left onto the local road. - Continue for 1 km, then take the dead-end road. - At the end of the tarmac road, we recommend stopping to enjoy the superb view of the hillsides, the village, the Rhône and the market garden area. 3 - TOWARDS THE MILL - Take the dirt track on the left and descend into the heart of one of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in France. The path leads to a restored building: the Mill, where the Fongeant and Reynard streams meet. 4 - TOWARDS THE RHÔNE - Follow the stream to the D386, cross the square in front of the church, then follow Rue du Port to the Rhône. (PS: every first Sunday and Monday in September, water jousting competitions are held here, featuring passes from Lyon and Givors). 5 - RETURN THROUGH THE VILLAGE - Go up Impasse du Port, continue along the small Rue du Port, then turn right in front of the château onto Rue du Grand Pré. - At the intersection with Rue des Coutures, turn left onto Rue du Trièves and cross the railway line via the underpass. - Continue along Impasse du Trièves until you reach the D386. 6 - FINAL ASCENT - Cross the road and take Rue de Ritolas opposite. - At the crossroads with Rue du Jarre and Route de la Brocarde, continue straight ahead along the dirt track. - Go around the house and follow the Ritolas path. The path is initially dirt, then tarmac. 7 - CROSSING THE HAMLETS - Follow the local road for 2.5 km through the hamlets of Ritolas and Giraud to reach the car park.

This church (19th century) is the most beautiful monument of the artistic heritage of Brignais. You can notice the bell, the organ, the woodword and the stain-glass windows. This church is the most beautiful monument of the artistic heritage of Brignais. Dedicated to Saint-Clair (590-660), patron saint of the blind and partially sighted persons, its first foundations dated from 1859. It was built on the place of the former feudal church and of the former cemetery. This church was built thanks to public subscriptions and town funds. The architect, Claire Tisseur, born in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon (writer of the "Littré de la Grand'Côte"*, and more famous, in France, under its pseudonym Nizier du Puitspelu.) and the abbot Rival, priest of the parish, presided the building of the monument. Thanks to its architecture and its furnishing, the monument forms a remarkable unity of ogival style of the 13th century, modernized in the 20th century. The woodwork (the pulpit, the confessionals and the stalls of the choir) is realised by sculptor Aubert from Lyon. The bell, dated from 1492, was listed in the "Inventaire des Monuments Historiques", on 27th November 1905. The organ was built by organ makers of the Jura mountains, Hartmann and Deloye, for the Benedictine community of Pradines (near the town of Roanne) in 1972. As it was for sale, the association "Les Amis de l'Orgue de Brignais", helped by the town hall, bought it in 1955. The size of the organ is fairly important (20 timbers). It integrates harmoniously the west transept of the church due to its dimensions. The organ builder, Hervé Clénet (from "Bectave-Aguin" - Gers department) and his assistant Jean Boissonade (from "Séverac l'Eglise" - Aveyron department), restaured the organ. The assembling, after restauration, was made by Jean Boissonade, helped by Maurice Crouzet and Jean-Marie Royet, from Brignais. The stain-glass windows : the five large stained-glass windows of the choir and the eight smaller windows of the lateral chapels were made by Mr Mauvernay, a glass-worker for Saint-Galmier. One of the roses represents the virtues of the Virgin, the other, the virtues of Saint-Clair. The stained-glass windows of the lawer naves represent scenes of Christian life. The designs were made by the abbot Rival. * a famous book encyclopedia with many humorous and picturesque anecdotes, inspired by the true and viviacious spirit of Lyon and its people.

This charming medieval chapel surrounded by an old cemetery shows the importance of the hamlet of Illins in the history of the village of Luzinay. The chapel was the former Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Illins parish church.

This remarkable natural site of islands and dried-out river inlets extending over 400 hectares is composed of natural habitats harboring rare species. Thematic trails will enable you to discover this wilderness area featuring dense alluvial vegetation. Access to the island is provided by the bridge in Vernaison.

The municipality of Serpaize own several stone bulding on its area. Indeed, this fabrication's process was primarly employed in this municipality for the construction of those various houses dating from 150 years

The castle displays the power of the 24 families that have owned it for the past 800 years. For the last 250 years it has belonged to the same family. Septème provides a warm welcome to children and adults alike. The name Septème recalls the presence in Roman times of a military milestone at mile seven (septem in Latin) on the road from Vienne to northern Italy. A the top of the hill are the ruins of the old castle (10th century). In the 13th century, the House of Savoy created a powerful base for operations against the Dauphin and set up an impressive stronghold with over 1 km of ramparts. Today the castle is famous for its impressive ramparts surrounding a park where peacocks roam free. The castle rooms are also exceptionally well preserved and are a chance for visitors to imagine life in the Middle Ages, thanks to the fine collections of furniture and ornamental objects.

Since 2004 this little stone house has housed the restored still that enables the distillers of the village of Vourles and surroundings areas to produce grape marc and fruit eau de vie. You'll also get to see a fruit press with its man-powered wheel.

427 ha, that is 10 % of the city of Lyon, were classified UNESCO world heritage on December 5th, 1998. Founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C. as the capital of the Three Gauls, the city has continued to play a major role in Europe's political, cultural and economic development ever since, and is vividly illustrated by its urban fabric and the many fine historic buildings from all periods. In all, 500 hectares have been listed and in particular four districts which superbly represent Lyon's history. Fourvière, the first of the historical sites, gives us a very accurate idea of the ancient world in Lyon thanks to its Gallo-Roman site. Old Lyon is a magnificent mediaeval and Renaissance district. La Croix-Rousse was listed for its industrial heritage, concerned mainly with the silk industry. Finally, the Presqu'île area features an architectural style typical of the 19th century. UNESCO chose Lyon as this is a city which has been faithfully preserved throughout the years. Nothing has been destroyed in these districts.

It is since 1964 the 1st conservation area of France and one of the vastest groups Renaissance of Europe, 24 ha. At the foot of the slopes of the hill of Fourvière since V °, there is of medieval period an archaeological garden towards the cathedral. During the Renaissance, its peak, neighborhoods are organized around three religious buildings: in the south, Saint George with the craftsmen; central location, Saint John, area of the upper clergy and aristocracy; in the north, Saint Paul district of the "bourgeoisie", financial and commercial center.
