Castle of Septème

Castle of Septème

Description

The castle displays the power of the 24 families that have owned it for the past 800 years. For the last 250 years it has belonged to the same family. Septème provides a warm welcome to children and adults alike.
The name Septème recalls the presence in Roman times of a military milestone at mile seven (septem in Latin) on the road from Vienne to northern Italy. A the top of the hill are the ruins of the old castle (10th century).

In the 13th century, the House of Savoy created a powerful base for operations against the Dauphin and set up an impressive stronghold with over 1 km of ramparts.

Today the castle is famous for its impressive ramparts surrounding a park where peacocks roam free.

The castle rooms are also exceptionally well preserved and are a chance for visitors to imagine life in the Middle Ages, thanks to the fine collections of furniture and ornamental objects.
