Day 2 of the southern loop of the Grande Traversée du Jura on Mountain bike from La Praille to Les Plans d'Hotonnes. With a length of almost 27 km, this second stage is the easiest of the three following a hilly route between 3 northern sites of Ain: La Praille, Lachat and Plans d'Hotonnes. Through the forests and ridges of Bugey, this stage will take you from the forests of the Plateau d'Hauteville to the large expanses of the Plateau de Retord. Hike in the local nature of Valromey following a peaceful river, an emerald source and several local heritage monuments. Ideal for families, this hike from Champagne-en-Valromey follows the course of the wild Arvière river to la Source du Groin, an impressive water resurgence of emerald color. The walk also allows you to discover the Adoue site, its source, its fountain and its 17th century chapel, then the Vieu en Valromey church and its unique history. This hike can be downloaded on the free app Ain Outdoor.

From Songieu (Sully lime tree next to the church and Aliettes lake close to the village), a country walk to the ridge line in the heart of pleasant valleys and forests.

From Songieu, discover natural and cultural attractions: the tines or vats dug by the Séran have created an arch; the caves inhabited in the Neolithic period are now private; the ruins of Châteauneuf, the former medieval capital. This relatively flat hike allows you to discover many geological and historical curiosities of Haut Valromey. If an approach is possible, access to the Pic cave is however reserved for speleologists. It is still possible to visit the silver fountain and the bench of lovers. Follow the yellow markup.

Thematic trail on the Plateau de Retord, in the footsteps of the first maquisards of the Ain, starting from the Les Plans station or the village of Hotonnes. Trails retracing the history of the first resistance camps on the Plateau de Retord: training and supervising the Maquis, Maquisards with multinational origins, the Interallied Mission "Musc" and the repressive operations February - July 1944. Several points of interest along the route: the Porte du Maquis, the Ferme de Deschapoux, the Ferme des Combettes, the Ferme de Morez, the Combe Danoi, the Ferme de Pré Carré, the Croix des Lagnieux and the Ferme du Sèche. Information panels retracing the history of these points of interest can be found along the route. This thematic trail was created in partnership with the Departmental Museum of the History of the Resistance and Deportation in Nantua. This hike can be downloaded on the free app Ain Outdoor.

A family walk with little difference in altitude. The majority of the walk is in the shade and offers a spectacular view over the valley that joins Ambérieu to Belley. The path runs along the cliff and children need to be supervised. Along the way, you will meet climbers and via-ferratists coming up from the cliff.

From Lochieu, in the footsteps of the Carthusian monks who lived on the site of Arvières in the Grand Colombier massif, discovery of the Arvières national forest: ruins of the former Carthusian monastery, interpretation panels, ethnobotanical garden, restaurant. This hike will take you in the footsteps of the Carthusian monks who inhabited the forests of the Grand Colombier from the 12th century to the French Revolution. From about 800 meters in altitude, it will take you up to almost 1200 meters to discover the site of Arvière, a wild and isolated place, a privileged refuge for contemplative life. To discover along the route: - La Correrie d'Arvière in La Rivoire. (Another building used by monks in lower altitude). - Le pont du Faon. (Bridge above the river Arvière) - La Grotte de Saint Arthaud. (Small cave on the way up). - Le sapin Janicot. (300 y.o tree). - The wild river Arvière. - Arvière: Chalet d'Arvière (restaurant), the botanical gardens, the ruins of the Charterhouse. Follow the initials "CX".

If you like exercise, nature and wide open spaces, the cross-country ski area of Praille in the Col de la Rochette is the ideal place to enjoy Nordic skiing and snowshoe. The Praille Cross-Country Skiing Centre has 8 different pistes with a combined length of 53km. These pistes are made up of 4 green runs, 1 blue runs, 2 red runs and 1 black run as well as a downhill slalom piste of 800m. There is also 5 snowshoeing circuits from 3.5 to 6.5 km in length and 2 tobogganing pistes. Accommodation is available at the nearby Gîte de Praille in addition to a bar and restaurant and children’s play area. It is also possible to hire all the skiing equipment you will need at The Praille Cross-Country Skiing Centre.

The Round Earth Ski Centre provides some fantastic downhill skiing in a great family atmosphere with pistes to suit all levels of experience and ages. The centre is located just outside of Hauteville-Lompnes at an altitude of between 900m and 1,200m. The Round Earth Ski Centre has 10 of well cared for downhill pistes which are made up of 3 green slopes, 2 blue, 4 red and 1 black. The centre has 4 drag lifts and it is possible to rent skis, snowboards, sleds, snowshoes, helmets, snow blades and surfing binders. There is also a 2km snowshoeing circuit (in conjunction with Praile Cross-Country Centre). At the bottom of the pistes after a great day's skiing you will find a snack bar.

The kitchen and scullery with a slopstone sink, the bedroom, cellar and outhouse and the dovecotes provide the stage for reconstructions and displays of the museum’s collections. The area’s history, significant people, daily life, geography and wildlife, means of transportation and landscapes are just some of the main themes presented in the exhibitions. Wood has always been, and continues to be, one of the area’s most important resources. An underlying theme of the visit, wood is featured in several of the museum’s collections, such as in the workshops which showcase the tools and material used in woodcraft professions (e.g. lumberjacks, coal producers, wheelwrights, coopers and woodturners). More impressive yet is the collection of turned artwork produced by 30 international artists, on display in the Renaissance house. Bugey also has a remarkable natural landscape of green countryside and rolling hills - the view from the museum illustrates this. The highest point of the Hauteville plateau, Mont Planachat reaches an altitude of 1,234 meters. The view to the east reveals the Grand Colombier massif, now famous due to its many Tour de France stages, as well as the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. The orientation table allows you to identify the surrounding peaks, valleys, and plateaus. In the foreground, the view overlooks the clearing of the Ferme Guichard inn, an old 17th-century Bugey farmhouse renowned for its cheese fondues and slate-cooked meats. Mount Planachat can be reached via the Planachat road from the center of Cormaranche-en-Bugey, followed by a 250-meter trail. Hikers can take the “Belvédère de Planachat” walking route, a 7 km loop starting from the church.

The Charabotte Waterfall is one of the tallest in France. This impressive 115-meter-high cascade can be seen between Chaley and the Hauteville Plateau, in the Albarine Valley, named after the river that plunges off the cliff. A viewpoint along the road from the Hauteville Plateau to Tenay allows for easy observation, with a small parking area available. As early as 1909, the site was classified as a “natural monument of artistic character,” highlighting its heritage value. Since 2002, the cliffs have been protected to preserve bird habitats, including ravens and peregrine falcons. More recently, in 2017, the site was designated a Sensitive Natural Area (ENS) by the Department of Ain. The modest river transforms into a powerful, ever-changing, poetic waterfall. The charming name “Charabotte” comes from a local legend: during a flood in Chaley, the legendary Cat with Seven-League Boots slipped and fell into the water-filled meadows. An old farmer exclaimed that the water was up to the cat’s boots, and from that day, the waterfall’s name, Charabotte, was born.

The Charabotte waterfall is a 115-metre waterfall set in lush green surroundings. Whether it's revealed at its full height or hidden from view by vegetation, approaching it is always a breathtaking experience. This imposing site can be visited either from the bottom of the valley at Chaley, or from the Hauteville plateau. The reculée ends at the bottom of the valley with the Charabotte waterfall, one of the highest in France at over 110 metres. It marks the start of the Albarine Gorge, named after the river that feeds it and rises in Brénod. The water from the falls then flows through the Hauteville valley to the Golet du Thiou. The site has been listed as a "natural monument of artistic interest" since 1909. The Charabotte waterfall was awarded the "Espace Naturel Sensible" or "ENS" label by the Département de l'Ain in 2015. True natural and landscape jewels of the Département de l'Ain, these sites benefiting from the ENS label are on the one hand preserved thanks to local management and on the other hand made accessible to as many people as possible when the fragility of the site allows.

Le Pont des Tines (The Tines bridge) is a geological feature located between the villages of Haut-Valromey and Ruffieu. This small canyon covered with green moss reveals the extent of its beauty during snowmelt or heavy rainfall. The waters of the Seran have dug into the rock and created this surprising natural arch. "Tines" means tub in the local former dialect, these are the names given to these strange cavities carved into the rock by the force of the current. Accessible by the hiking trails from Songieu, Ruffieu, or from the D54 road. Not to be confused with the Puit des Tines located a few kilometres downstream of the Séran river.

The Château de Champdor is located a few kilometers drive north of Hauteville-Lompnes. The building dates from 1743 and has 2 tall towers and several outbuildings. Please note that it is not possible to visit the inside of the château. The Château de Champdor comprises of 14 rooms and has a traditional pigeon house within its grounds. It is not possible to visit the interior of the château except during certain dates during July and August when art exhibitions are held there.

Unusual conical stalagmite of 6 metres high, located in a large remote area, built over thousands of years by the Brise limestone water. Marvellous waterfall when the water flows along the cone. This site is part of 32 sites labeled Sensitive Area in the Ain department. It is forbidden to bathe in the bed of the Brise River or in the basin at the foot of the stalagmite. It is forbidden to picnic on the site. Animals accepted on leash only. Please note that the flow varies greatly with the seasons, sometimes the waterfall can be dry during the summer.

An unspoiled site nearly half a kilometre in length, where the Séran has hewn out a succession of potholes linked by deep, narrow clefts in the rock down which roaring water cascades. This site is part of 32 sites labeled Sensitive area in the Ain department. A stone pavement forms a bridge over one deep pothole, providing access to the path to the former railway station of Vieu. The gorges are located close to the hamlet of Belmont, and are part of a hiking trail named Les gorges de Thurignin. It is forbidden to bathe in the bed of the Séran and to picnic on the banks of the Séran. Animals accepted on leash only. Please note that the flow of the Séran river varies greatly over the seasons, it happens that the gorges can be dry during the summer.

Impressive intermittent resurgence in a Sensitive Natural Space. The Groin spring is one of the geological curiosities of the Valromey, awarded the "ENS" label by the Ain department in 2016. Real natural and landscaped jewels of the Ain department, sites with the ENS "Espaces naturels sensibles" label are managed in such a way as to preserve the biodiversity they host, and developed for opening to the public (barring exceptions due to the fragility of the environments). The water that flows out of the basin comes from underground streams formed by the infiltration of rainwater from the Haut-Valromey and Plateau de Retord. Depending on the period (dry or rainy), the basin is more or less full of water, or even empty. The differences in level are impressive. In the rainy season, the siphon opens with a frightening roar, and the water flow at the siphon outlet can reach 5m3 per second. To protect this sensitive natural area, it is forbidden to swim in the groin or picnic on the site or along the banks. Pets allowed on leash only.
