Fun, educational and sensory, it enables people with reduced mobility to discover the natural environment, whatever their disability, particularly motor or visual. Designed and built by ONF. Come and discover the new trail designed and built by the Office National des Forêts (ONF) in the Aigoual state forest, Forêt d'Exception®, in the commune of Bréau-Mars. Playful, educational and sensory, it enables people with reduced mobility to discover the natural environment, whatever their disability, particularly motor or visual. At the entrance to the trail, you'll find a refreshing spring. Along the 450-metre trail, stop-off points provide information on the natural riches of the site, with 5 discovery stops equipped with wooden furniture (panels, seats). At the end of the trail, you'll be treated to a breathtaking view of the southern Causse du Larzac, from a belvedere entirely designed and conceived by the ONF. The path's deactivated concrete surface provides an even surface for easy wheelchair movement, and is easy to maintain. Special techniques were used to avoid polluting the natural environment during installation. Two colors of concrete, gray for the pathway and salmon for the theme stops, alternate along the route. Rows of pavers also separate the colors, so that the visually impaired can also detect the transition between the two zones. At the start of the trail, two PMR-compliant parking spaces allow users to begin their journey directly on the concrete. This parking area is separated from the rest of the path by a small median strip. A "breadcrumb trail" frames the path to guide the visually impaired. Two chicanes secure the entrance and exit to restrict motor vehicle traffic. Guardrails at the gully of the culvert and wooden bollards in the parking lot reserved for the PRM public ensure greater safety. All the furniture was produced and assembled by the ONF wood workshop in Meyrueis, Lozère, and set in concrete to prevent theft and limit damage.

The distinctive feature of Mandagout is its scattered settlement in picturesque hamlets surrounded by chestnut woods. Its territory is criss-crossed by an ancient track leading up from the valleys to the La Lusette and Espérou passes, a reminder of the importance of ridge paths in the past, before roads were built at the bottom of the valleys. Mandagout's rich hydraulic heritage provides an insight into how water was collected and used to grow crops on the ferries. Mandagout is still home to many farmers and producers who continue to grow reinette apples, chestnuts and sweet onions. The hillsides around Beaulieu and towards the Arboux valley have south-east-facing terraces that benefit from natural ventilation thanks to the valley's topography. These wide, flat, deep spaces, made up of granitic arenas, are ideal for growing PDO sweet onions. Marker 1The mouflon is a ruminant mammal related to the domestic sheep. Its staple diet is herbaceous plants, which it finds in open spaces such as heaths. It also feeds on about a hundred other plants (ferns, mosses, mushrooms, etc.).The horns of the male (ram) are spiral-shaped and grow continuously, which makes it possible to estimate its age. The female (ewe) rarely has horns. The mouflon's life expectancy is around 14 years. Being an excellent climber, it can easily escape to steep areas in case of danger. These rocky zones also help limit the growth of its hooves through wear.

In his works, André Chamson constructed an imaginary Cévennes park. His writings bear witness to his love for the area and his attachment to his Huguenot ancestors. A nationally renowned writer, he was elected to the Académie française in 1956. His final works see time and death become more powerful than work or human faith.

Marker 6L'Abeuradou is located on a draille, a drovers' road for shepherds and their flocks to move between the plains of Languedoc and summer pastures on the southern Massif Central. The name L'Abeuradou indicates that it is a spot where the flocks drink and rest before continuing their long hike. Today's domestic sheep is descended from the mouflon. Since being introduced to the slopes of Mont Aigoual, the mouflon has thus been rubbing shoulders with its cousin, which grazes here in summer. Their cohabitation does not seem to be a problem for the livestock farmers.

Marker 5The Cévennes National Park is unusual for a national park in that hunting is allowed in its central zone. In the absence of large predators, hunting is considered compatible with maintaining a good natural balance. Local mouflons are subject to a compulsory hunting plan, which estimates the numbers to be culled every year. There is regular monitoring to check population levels. Knowing that a mouflon group grows by about 25% a year, it is possible to calculate the number of animals that can be culled without compromising the future of the herd.

There are two methods for counting mouflons. “Relative abundance indices” estimate variations in the population. In May, observers position themselves in fixed spots at day's end and record the number of animals they see in 20 minutes. Head counts “by combined observation from a hide and from stalking” are used at the end of winter. Observers move through thickets where mouflons shelter. The groups of animals they disturb escape towards fixed observers, who count them. The mouflon population is currently estimated at around 200. Local actors and inhabitants are very involved in the monitoring and counting operations.

Marker 2Twenty-three mouflons were introduced to this mountain range in 1954. They roamed the ridge rimmed by heath that you can see in front and to the right of you. Since introduction, the population has slowly grown on the Cevenol slopes. In 1999, the Gard Departmental Hunters' Federation in tandem with the Office National des Forêts, the Cévennes National Park, farmers and hunters took over the management and monitoring of the species. Since then, the population has grown steadily in the Aigoual area, and has recently started to settle other districts as well.

Créé en 1890, il fait partie des 10 sites forestiers conçus pour expérimenter les essences destinées à la reconstitution de la forêt domaniale de l'Aigoual. Nouveau sentier conçu et réalisé par l’Office national des Forêts (ONF) en forêt domaniale de l’Aigoual, Forêt d’Exception®, sur la commune de Bréau-Salagosse. Situé sur la route départementale 48 entre le Vigan et l’Espérou, au niveau de la Maison des Cévennes (hébergement et restauration), il est accessible en 1h30 depuis Montpellier ou 1h45 depuis Nîmes. Sur une distance de 900 mètres aller/retour depuis le parking, partez pour une immersion en forêt jusqu’à un magnifique point de vue ! Vous découvrirez l’histoire de ce lieu particulier (présence d’un arboretum et d’une ancienne maison forestière, témoins du reboisement du massif à la fin du XIXème siècle) et la richesse du milieu environnant, grâce à 5 stations ludiques, pédagogiques et sensorielles (reconnaissance d’écorces, de cônes, de feuilles, de silhouettes d’oiseaux, etc.). Le matériau bois est à l’honneur tout au long du parcours, depuis la table de pique-nique accessible PMR au niveau du parking jusqu’au belvédère final, en passant par le fil d’Ariane et les espaces de repos (bancs). Marker 4The Pic de Barette is a perfect viewpoint for spotting a great variety of animals, especially the golden eagle. Mouflons like to warm up in the sun and graze quietly on the slope opposite you, near the rocks that stick out of the forest. You will need patience and silence to spot mouflons. In spring and summer, their beige colour stands out against the rather green surroundings. In autumn and winter, it is easiest to make out the females' white 'face masks' and the males' saddles (white mark on the back).

Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Lime rendering and the use of chestnut wood blend perfectly with the original stone. The garden offers a variety of relaxation areas for a well-deserved rest. Situated on the edge of the GR70 and very close to the GR61, 'Le Pré de Modestine' is the ideal place to enjoy the end of Stevenson's route, or to organize hikes to discover the Cévennes. The gîte is located 1 km upstream from Saint Jean du Gard.

In the heart of the historic Cévennes, l'Amorié is nestled in one of the many folds of the Cévennes mountains. The reception is done in an authentic hamlet with an architecture preserved for more than three centuries. This exceptional location allows for numerous nature activities all year round. Bivouac nature is a camp of eco-lodges tents to spend a pleasant stay in the heart of nature. It is also possible to rent a Bivouac pitch to pitch your own tent without electricity. Ecological and resolutely turned towards a committed and green tourism, the site of Bivouac Nature is without wifi nor car to take advantage fully and serenely of the place in family. Some tents are fully equipped (bathroom, solar panel lighting) and all our models have bedrooms with real beds and a kitchenette (fridge, 2 burner stove, dishes and utensils). It is also possible to rent a Bivouac pitch to put up your own tent (without electrical connection). We will accompany you throughout your stay and advise you. On the site, you will enjoy original activities: hiking and walks, treasure hunts, nature recreation for families in summer, and we will show you the most beautiful swimming spots in the region (river at 1.5 km).
