Along this trail you will discover the landscapes painted by artists of the 19th century. En route you can admire the medallion dedicated to the painters Millet and Rousseau, as well as the Barbizon Elephant. The Millet-Rousseau medallion: this medallion pays tribute to two emblematic painters of the school of Barbizon: Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) and Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867). A work by sculptor Henri Chapu from the town of Le Mée sur Seine, it was inaugurated on April 19th, 1884 thanks to a public subscription organized by the artists of Barbizon. Millet and Rousseau are buried in the cemetery of Chailly en Bière. The Barbizon Elephant: a very beautiful representative of the forest stone bestiary, this elephant is a masterpiece of nature. It comes from the random fortunes of the geologic history of the massif and its boulder formation; one fellow pachyderm can be seen near Larchant on the 5-cross trail. Numerous rocks thus evoke a whole animal or imaginary world. A picture by Sisley representing Monet at work is kept by the Saarbrücken museum.

The Pays de Fontainebleau Tourist Office invites you to discover a cultural and natural heritage: the Vanne aqueduct and various forest stands. It's also a great climbing area. The Vanne aqueduct: built between 1867 and 1874, it is 173 km long, and still supplies the city of Paris with drinking water. The water inside circulates by gravity alone, the high source being at 111 m altitude, whereas the Montsouris reservoir at the end is at 80 m. The slope is not always regular and sometimes requires special facilities, such as siphons. Bouldering in Fontainebleau: the forest of Fontainebleau is a world highlight for bouldering. To-day more than 30,000 boulders are open and secured in the forest for the practice of rock climbing. There are circuits of various difficulty (color-coded from white to black). On this trail, white marks signal a bouldering circuit for children, who can also play among the rocks at the foot of the Rocher du Télégraphe.

This trail, called artist trail, provided inspiration to the landscape painters of Barbizon. It allows a discovery of the Bas-Bréau high forests harboring the Dormoir (resting place) de Lantara, the Corot boulder, and the Sully oak. The Dormoir de Lantara: a « dormoir » is a place where herds could rest sheltered from rain or sun. In the 19th century up to 20000 cattle would graze in the forest. Simon Mathurin Lantara (1729-1778) is regarded as one of the very first French landscape painters. The Sully oak: this is one of the most ancient oaks in the forest of Fontainebleau, with a circumference over 5 meters. It was the setting of several movies. Its name pays tribute to Maximilien de Béthune, Duc de Sully (1559-1641), Finance Minister under King Henri IV. The Corot boulder: Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796- 1875) chose this place to paint the picture of a young girl standing in front of a boulder (at present in the Senlis museum). A painter’s easel shows the exact spot.

This trail will enable you to discover one of the rocky boulders of the forest, as well as the traditional wood and sandstone works undertaken to fight erosion. You will walk a “cavaliere” or bridle path, which is a throughfare across a rocky ridge. Geology: after invading the Parisian Basin for the last time some 37 million years ago, the sea deposited a huge quantity of very fine and pure sand that in some areas reached a thickness of 60 meters. In the Quaternary era, long after the sea withdrew, a very complex evolution took place and some sandy zones were solidified by the silica contained in water, forming sandstone beds in the sand called “platières”. Freed by erosion, their borders collapsed thus creating the Fontainebleau sandstone boulders arranged in spectacular chaos. The Brigand cavern: it is the work of Claude François Denecourt. This cavern has 2 entries linked by an underground tunnel. Claude François Denecourt, who invented nature tourism, invented as well the legend whereby this cavern would have served as a den of bandits under the reign of King Louis XV.

This walk was designed to discover the beautiful landscapes of the Fontainebleau massif, and their fragility to erosion, as well as the works undertaken to preserve them. The Apremont stairs: erosion is a natural phenomenon, linked to climatic events (wind, rain…) which can be aggravated by repeated trampling. It gradually destroys vegetation, the ground gets bared, and the sand trickles away. Tree roots then get bared as well. At a later stage, the trees die and/or fall. Erosion can even destabilize some of the boulders. In order to limit this phenomenon, ONF has built 149-step stairs. They give access to the Gorges d’Apremont, a true landscape gem. The gorge: in the forest of Fontainebleau, gorges are dry, and no rivers flow. They were created by water currents several million years ago. Nowadays they disappear under vegetation, while until the beginning of the 20th century they formed a desertic expanse of sand and rocks; the toponymy preserves its memory, through the name “Apremont Desert”. Walking along the trail, the rocks can nowadays be seen under moss, ferns, and pines.

From the George Sand oak to the Eye of Nations, this trail will give you a good overall view of the main landscapes of the magnificent forest of Fontainebleau; a landscape of moors and boulders, and high oak groves. The Franchard hermitage: a first hermitage was built in the 12th century. It was largely destroyed during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Rebuilt in 1676, it was abandoned for good in 1717 by royal order, because of insecurity at the place. A forest guard station was built on its ruins under the reign of King Louis-Philippe (1830-1848). The Eye of Nations: this monument can be seen on the ground, and symbolizes the vigilant watch of the nations over the planet environment. It was inaugurated in 1998 for the 50th anniversary of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), created in Fontainebleau in 1948. The heart of a Fontainebleau oak was ringed with bronze and embedded in the middle of a cast iron plate on which the names of all signatory countries appear. These countries pledged their intent to protect certain areas reserved on purpose for conservation.

This trail provides an immersion into an environment rich in numerous tree species standing in various settings. It is an invitation to exercise hearing, sight, touch,and smell. Arboretum: it was developed from 1973 by an ONF forester, after a blaze that had devastated the area. This fenced 20 hectares space is in the heart of the forest. An Ariane’s thread, and sandstone passageways on the ground, serve as markers for safe orientation. Tree species: numerous tree species abound, some of them exotic. For instance are to be found: checker tree (also known as “wild service tree”), Atlas cedar, Nordmann fir, sycamore maple, or Himalayan white pine. Giant sequoias: several sequoias were planted in the forest of Fontainebleau. You can observe on this trail the most beautiful specimen. It was named after a famous Indian chief. Native Americans of the Sierra Nevada worshipped the giant sequoia that they considered as a pillar of the universe, around which everything else had been created. They would call it the Phoenix tree for its ability to survive fire and rise from its ashes.

This trail allows the discovery of the Tillaie Integral Biological Reserve (RBI), where nature is left to evolve on its own. A remarkable ancient oak is there to discover as well. The Tillaie Integral Biological Reserve: Integral Biological Reserves were created by decree in 1953 to replace “Artistic Series” established in 1861 under the reign of Napoleon III (1852-1870). They consist in areas left free to evolve on their own. The only human interventions still allowed are scientific surveys, securing alleys that still exist, and hunting. Dead wood: its decomposition allows soil enrichment. It is home to numerous insects, fungus, and birds. It is estimated that 25% of fauna and flora species in the forest rely on the presence of dead wood. The Jupiter oak: this majestic oak, 6.7 meters in circumference, is still standing albeit dead since 1994. Its age at the time was estimated to be 650 years. 3 years of drought at the beginning of the 1990s prevented it from surviving any longer. It is surrounded by a fence for the sake of visitors’ safety.

The very serious Revue des Arts published in 1854 a guided tour of the three ground floor rooms and detailed the decorations. Has have helped us reconstruct the rooms at the inn at its most brilliant period. The painted furniture and panels and the way the rooms are presented are a good representation of the painters’ inn. The restoration of the upper floor started in 1990, has revealed decoration painted or drawn by the artists when staying in the rooms. Three exhibits show the work of the Barbizon School with landscape and animal themes. In 1964, the famous singer Claude François, who is looking for a peaceful place to rest, discovers a water mill of the 12th century in the pretty village of Dannemois. Claude François quickly named his house "The Mill". He spent 14 years making this house the magical place he always dreamed of and a festive rendezvous for his celebrity friends. Faithful to Dannemois, he lived there until his death in 1978 and was buried in the village's cemetery where his fans can pay tribute to him. Since 1998, The Mill is shining again thanks to Mr and Mrs Lescure, a couple of bakers, who bought it to make museum. The owners decided to reconstitute this "Farm of Happiness" identically as it was when Claude François lived here. The museum's collection is regularly expanded where you will discover his costumes, some touring objects, his bedroom and bathroom. There is a also a restaurant where you can eat and sometimes enjoy a singing and dancing show. The gift shop will allow you to buy some souvenirs of this magical visit. Let's discover this iconic chapel in Milly-la-Forêt, a testimony of the rich past of the city where Jean Cocteau is buried. This chapel from the 12th century is the last testimony of the old leprosarium of Milly-la-Forêt, where lepers used to pray Saint-Blaise le Guériesseur (the Healer). It was abandoned during the 18th century and was used for different things such as a prison, a shed and a kiln. In 1959, Jean Cocteau was asked by the mayor to decorate the chapel with apintings about plants and the resurrection. Cocteau also aksed to be buried in the chapel. In the middle of the building, a tombstone is engraved with his name, and his last boyfriend's name and those simple words of fidelity "I stay with you". The garden surrounding the chapel is an echo to the traditional medicinal plants cultivation in Milly. Those plants also called "simples" were once used to heal lepers.

The church of Moigny changed a lot throughout the centuries. Several curiosities can be seen inside of it. The church of Moigny-sur-École was built during the 12th century, when it was the first Gothic age. However, some traces of Roman art were found on the altar. The church was greatly damaged during the Hundred Years War which led to a rebuilding of the church at the end of the 15th century. The bell tower was totally rebuilt during the 16th century. Those numerous works throughout the centuries gave a dissymmetrical look to the church. The only vestiges remaining of the 12th century’s church are a part of the arches. All parts of the church are made of different architectural styles and the inside is full of decoration, especially a magnificent fresco representing the education of Virgin Mary by Sainte Anne. The modillion cornice of the apse is adorned with a frieze, which is extremely rare in the Gâtinais, also it is one of the oldest parts of the church. The frieze is a representation of 40 human faces who are the elders of the Apocalypse, but only 32 faces are still visible nowadays. Inside the church, a fresco of the education of Virgin Mary is located on the spandrel, near the transept. It can hardly be seen nowadays. This fresco is quite original as it represents the Earth as flat. It is supposed that the fresco was made before 1492 and the European discovery of America when people still believed the Earth was flat. The church and several pieces of furniture (the bell, some statues, a painting of the pilgrims of Emmaus) were classified as part of the Monuments Historiques in 1926. The stained-glass windows are contemporary because they were made in 2006 when the church was restored, also they are inspired by important moments from the Bible. The church of Moigny is dedicated to Saint-Denis (Saint Denis) also known as Saint Denis of Paris. He lived during the 3rd century and was from Italy. He was the first bishop of Paris. The legend goes that he died as a martyr and beheaded with other saints in Montmartre and then was buried in Saint-Denis. The basilica Saint-Denis was built at the place where he was buried. This basilica is also the place where most Kings and Queens of France are buried. Saint Denis is always represented holding his own head in his hands. He is the secondary patron saint for the French monarchy. It is the irst and only museum dedicated to the firemen in Essonne. The ecomuseum named "La Passion du Rouge" opened in 2016 and gathers a nice collection of tools, vehicles, outfits and uniforms of firemen. Those objects are from different periods and make us travel throughout time to see how the profession evolved. Several showrooms display those objects and show how firemen are working in their everyday life but also in the past.

19th and 20th century collection of paintings and sculptures Temporary exhibitions Passionnate about art and collector, Paul Bédu was a rich heir of a local family. He spent his life collecting art works until his death in 1977. In 1990, his widow, Gabrielle Lagarde decided to bequeath his art collection, to the village of Miully-la-Forêt, to honor her husbands memory. She funded the works to transform the former boys school into the cultural center Paul Bédu. Inaugurated on june 24th 2000, the center displays the collection and hosts temporary exhibitions throug the year. Amongst the collection, one can find “La Viegre à l’enfant”, a number of artworks by Marie Laurencin, and a famous painting “et le soleil s’endormit sur l’Adriatique”, by the mysterious Joachim Raphaël Boronali. The center also owns more contemporary artworks by Jean Cocteau and Niki de Saint Phalle
