Along this trail you will discover the landscapes painted by artists of the 19th century. En route you can admire the medallion dedicated to the painters Millet and Rousseau, as well as the Barbizon Elephant. The Millet-Rousseau medallion: this medallion pays tribute to two emblematic painters of the school of Barbizon: Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) and Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867). A work by sculptor Henri Chapu from the town of Le Mée sur Seine, it was inaugurated on April 19th, 1884 thanks to a public subscription organized by the artists of Barbizon. Millet and Rousseau are buried in the cemetery of Chailly en Bière. The Barbizon Elephant: a very beautiful representative of the forest stone bestiary, this elephant is a masterpiece of nature. It comes from the random fortunes of the geologic history of the massif and its boulder formation; one fellow pachyderm can be seen near Larchant on the 5-cross trail. Numerous rocks thus evoke a whole animal or imaginary world. A picture by Sisley representing Monet at work is kept by the Saarbrücken museum.

Set out to explore Fontainebleau Forest and admire its exceptional landscapes, following in the footsteps of the numerous writers, poets and painters who found artistic inspiration here in the second half of the 19th century. Relive Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous trek from Barbizon to Grez-sur-Loing – the inspiration for his book “Treasure Forest” – to meet up with his artist friends staying at the Hôtel Chevillon.

This trail, called artist trail, provided inspiration to the landscape painters of Barbizon. It allows a discovery of the Bas-Bréau high forests harboring the Dormoir (resting place) de Lantara, the Corot boulder, and the Sully oak. The Dormoir de Lantara: a « dormoir » is a place where herds could rest sheltered from rain or sun. In the 19th century up to 20000 cattle would graze in the forest. Simon Mathurin Lantara (1729-1778) is regarded as one of the very first French landscape painters. The Sully oak: this is one of the most ancient oaks in the forest of Fontainebleau, with a circumference over 5 meters. It was the setting of several movies. Its name pays tribute to Maximilien de Béthune, Duc de Sully (1559-1641), Finance Minister under King Henri IV. The Corot boulder: Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796- 1875) chose this place to paint the picture of a young girl standing in front of a boulder (at present in the Senlis museum). A painter’s easel shows the exact spot.

This trail will enable you to discover one of the rocky boulders of the forest, as well as the traditional wood and sandstone works undertaken to fight erosion. You will walk a “cavaliere” or bridle path, which is a throughfare across a rocky ridge. Geology: after invading the Parisian Basin for the last time some 37 million years ago, the sea deposited a huge quantity of very fine and pure sand that in some areas reached a thickness of 60 meters. In the Quaternary era, long after the sea withdrew, a very complex evolution took place and some sandy zones were solidified by the silica contained in water, forming sandstone beds in the sand called “platières”. Freed by erosion, their borders collapsed thus creating the Fontainebleau sandstone boulders arranged in spectacular chaos. The Brigand cavern: it is the work of Claude François Denecourt. This cavern has 2 entries linked by an underground tunnel. Claude François Denecourt, who invented nature tourism, invented as well the legend whereby this cavern would have served as a den of bandits under the reign of King Louis XV.

This walk was designed to discover the beautiful landscapes of the Fontainebleau massif, and their fragility to erosion, as well as the works undertaken to preserve them. The Apremont stairs: erosion is a natural phenomenon, linked to climatic events (wind, rain…) which can be aggravated by repeated trampling. It gradually destroys vegetation, the ground gets bared, and the sand trickles away. Tree roots then get bared as well. At a later stage, the trees die and/or fall. Erosion can even destabilize some of the boulders. In order to limit this phenomenon, ONF has built 149-step stairs. They give access to the Gorges d’Apremont, a true landscape gem. The gorge: in the forest of Fontainebleau, gorges are dry, and no rivers flow. They were created by water currents several million years ago. Nowadays they disappear under vegetation, while until the beginning of the 20th century they formed a desertic expanse of sand and rocks; the toponymy preserves its memory, through the name “Apremont Desert”. Walking along the trail, the rocks can nowadays be seen under moss, ferns, and pines.

From the George Sand oak to the Eye of Nations, this trail will give you a good overall view of the main landscapes of the magnificent forest of Fontainebleau; a landscape of moors and boulders, and high oak groves. The Franchard hermitage: a first hermitage was built in the 12th century. It was largely destroyed during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Rebuilt in 1676, it was abandoned for good in 1717 by royal order, because of insecurity at the place. A forest guard station was built on its ruins under the reign of King Louis-Philippe (1830-1848). The Eye of Nations: this monument can be seen on the ground, and symbolizes the vigilant watch of the nations over the planet environment. It was inaugurated in 1998 for the 50th anniversary of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), created in Fontainebleau in 1948. The heart of a Fontainebleau oak was ringed with bronze and embedded in the middle of a cast iron plate on which the names of all signatory countries appear. These countries pledged their intent to protect certain areas reserved on purpose for conservation.

This walk enables you to discover two very different sites: the boulder chaos* of the Rocher Canon, and a pond with its ditches created by Man. La mare aux Evées: the word « Evées » comes from old French and applies to a swampy area. The purpose of its ditches, dug under King Louis Philippe as part of public works aimed at fighting unemployment, is to drain this swampy area. A few noteworthy trees, as well as the names of alleys, bear witness to an ancient arboretum. More than 20 km of ditches were dug in a star pattern, as well as the central basin of 12. 000 m3. Noteworthy trees: at the Rocher Canon, the oak called “Bonsai” is an outstanding curiosity of the Fontainebleau massif, a twisted tree literally “sitting” on a sandstone rock. Around the Mare aux Evées (and the Mare à Bauge nearby), bald cypresses also known as Louisiana cypresses were planted around 1830; an aerial excrescence of their roots, called cypress knees or pneumatophores can be observed. Forest alleys: they began to be cut through the forest under the reign of King Henri IV (1556-1610), in order to ease access to the forest for stag hunting. The court was then able to follow the hunt in carriages thanks to theses alleys and star crossroads.

This walk allows you to discover the pond called “Mare aux Evées” with its surrounding oak and beech high groves, but also a little-known historic heritage: former oil wells. La Mare aux Evées: its name “Evées” is an old French word for a marshy area. In order to drain this part of the forest which is flooded most of the time, some works were undertaken under the reign of King Louis Philippe in accordance with the drainage plan designed by Achille Marrier de Bois d’Hyver, head of the Water and Forest Administration between 1833 and 1835. More than 20 km of ditches were dug in a star pattern as well as the central Basin of 12,000 m3. Former oil well: between 1958 and 1986, 58 oil wells were drilled in this part of the forest. An old structure was preserved as a witness of this odd history. This project was stopped in the framework of the forest conservation. Bald cypress: this area of the forest is the only one where bald cypresses (taxodium distichum) can be observed. It is a large, pyramidal coni ferous fond of wetlands. Its “bald” name comes from its deciduous nature, which is rare among coniferous trees.

This trail allows the discovery of the Tillaie Integral Biological Reserve (RBI), where nature is left to evolve on its own. A remarkable ancient oak is there to discover as well. The Tillaie Integral Biological Reserve: Integral Biological Reserves were created by decree in 1953 to replace “Artistic Series” established in 1861 under the reign of Napoleon III (1852-1870). They consist in areas left free to evolve on their own. The only human interventions still allowed are scientific surveys, securing alleys that still exist, and hunting. Dead wood: its decomposition allows soil enrichment. It is home to numerous insects, fungus, and birds. It is estimated that 25% of fauna and flora species in the forest rely on the presence of dead wood. The Jupiter oak: this majestic oak, 6.7 meters in circumference, is still standing albeit dead since 1994. Its age at the time was estimated to be 650 years. 3 years of drought at the beginning of the 1990s prevented it from surviving any longer. It is surrounded by a fence for the sake of visitors’ safety.

It is difficult to know precisely when the inn was built. Before 1820, the only inns in the region were at Chailly. Alfred Sensier, friend of Théodore Rousseau and a historian of Barbizon, gives the date of 1824. A return to the time of the painters of the forest of Fontainebleau. The museum of the school of Barbizon is spread over two sites : the Ganne Auberge and the Workshop-House of Theodore Rousseau. One is the principal historical way-points of the artists who came to work in the forest of Fontainebleau (1830-1875). The other is the Workshop where the famous landscape artist Theodore Rousseau lived from 1847 until his death in 1867. The Exhibition Rooms of the Auberge restore the friendly atmosphere so dear to the Peint'à Ganne, thanks to the furniture and decors and through a hundred different works (Jean-François Millet , Narcisse Diaz de la Peña , Constant Troyon , Rosa Bonheur...). Luck has had it that the newspaper “L’Illustration” published a full report in 1853, illustrated with engravings, showing the pictorial treasures hidden inside this modest inn, the major part of which has come miraculously down to us. The very serious Revue des Arts published in 1854 a guided tour of the three ground floor rooms and detailed the decorations. Has have helped us reconstruct the rooms at the inn at its most brilliant period. The painted furniture and panels and the way the rooms are presented are a good representation of the painters’ inn. The restoration of the upper floor started in 1990, has revealed decoration painted or drawn by the artists when staying in the rooms. Three exhibits show the work of the Barbizon School with landscape and animal themes. A very attractive audiovisual presentation takes you back to the time of the painters of the Barbizon School Leaving behind them Parisian studios and academicism, the "painted in Ganne" came together in the Auberge de Barbizon to paint "sur le motif" and for very bohemian parties.

Powerful smells from the undergrowth, the inhabited silence of the forest, shimmering colours and landscapes dictated by the seasons - the visitor delights in the multi-faceted personality of the forest of Fontainebleau. Jumbled sandstone boulders concealing caves with legendary secrets, greenness stretching as far as the eye can see, tinted with golden colours in autumn and bluish with frost on winter mornings - you can almost believe you have joined the immensity of the world! The forest at the dawn of time... The forest of Fontainebleau covers 17,000 hectares, extended by the 3,000 hectares of the massif of the Trois Pignons. Paths have been laid and marked out for 300 km. Sandstone has formed on its silty, sandy soil, throwback to the Stampian sea that covered it at the dawn of time: the grains of sand have cemented over millions of years, causing rock falls and creating caves and boulder fields, gradually eroded by rain and wind. A fresh water lake deposited limestone from shell debris on the sand and the sandstone, protecting the forest sand and keeping it white and pure. Multi-faceted flora and fauna 5,685 species of plant life have been listed: oak, beech, hornbeam, chestnut, locust, birch, maritime and Scots pine and juniper, plus a few curiosities planted by former owners: sequoia, spruce and cedar. Protected wild animals coexist in the seeming tranquillity of the forest: deer and roe deer, wild boar and foxes, squirrels, rabbits, badgers and even reptiles. Although you are unlikely to encounter any wolves, you may perhaps catch sight of some timid elk by penetrating into the depths of the forest, although they are active mainly at twilight and during the night when their kingdom is returned to them. The forest sings with the chirping of 250 different species of birds, but you need patience and a good musical ear to identify them all! Dream landscapes! The forest of Fontainebleau contains a number of outstanding landscapes and sites. Of particular note, perhaps, are the Franchard gorges, the former 12th century hermitage and the viewpoint over the forest and the far-distant plain; the Apremont boulder field and desert, famous for its rock piles; the heights of the Solle, for the panorama at their foot over the racecourse and the magnificent tall beech forest of Gros Fouteau, not forgetting the Croix du Calvaire, dominating the town of Fontainebleau and its château.

Private websites. These holiday homes, built along the river from 1830 to 1914, from Saint-Mammès to Seine-Port via Thomery, Samois-sur-Seine, Héricy, Livry-sur-Seine, Bois-le-Roi and Boissettes, belonged to industrialists and shopkeepers from Melun and, above all, Paris. With the arrival of the railway, they built these villas to spend their summers and weekends in the countryside, between forests and rivers.

From the 17th century onwards, two châteaux dominated the hillside. One was the Château des Vives Eaux. It was remodelled and embellished by the Parisian architect Jacques Gondouin, who came here in 1791 with his family to escape the French Revolution. Like Château des Vosves, it was to become one of the holiday homes to grace the banks of the Seine from the mid-19th century onwards.

From the 17th century onwards, two châteaux dominated the hillside. One of them was Vosves. A fine bourgeois residence, it was one of the holiday resorts that graced the banks of the Seine and made it famous in the mid-19th century.

The advent of the train meant faster connections between towns. Paris suddenly became very close, especially as one of the first lines directly concerned the conurbation, the PLM (Paris Lyon Méditérannée). The train from Paris stopped at Melun on 9 September 1849. Vosves station, on another line linking Corbeil to Montereau, saw its first train on 1 June 1897. From the end of the 19th century, these links enabled many city dwellers to enjoy the bucolic charm of the countryside and the banks of the Seine. At the same time, majestic holiday homes were springing up along the banks of the Seine: the Folies or Affolantes!

It is an old place situated on the descent of the rue de la gare. It is fed by the resurgence of a spring from the Bière plateau. A fountain leaning against the stone wall at the top of the street provided water for the few inhabitants of the hamlet.

Also known as "Les Bas Bouillants", this building is typical of the second half of the 19th century. A holiday destination for the Parisian nobility of the time, they were christened Folies or Affolantes, because of the multiple architectural references that went into their construction. Doctor Soubiran, a notable Parisian whose name will remain attached to the residence, commissioned this mansion in pure classical Louis XIII style. The château is set in beautiful grounds. The owner took advantage of the work to bury the ru du Lys for the "tacot" (a small train) to pass along the street that runs alongside the estate, to divert its course and make it pass behind the house, feeding a network of small streams and a pond where the animals of the Ferme Enfantine still frolic today.

A large main dining room accommodates 60 guests in a warm mountain decor of green and beige, around a wood-burning stove. A covered terrace overlooking the forest can accommodate 100 guests in a red and burgundy garden setting, also around a wood-burning stove. An open-air terrace can accommodate 40 guests in a red and burgundy garden setting. Additional space is available for 25 guests. Savoyard specialties such as raclettes, fondues and tartiflettes are on offer, along with a varied menu that changes three times a year.
