Fontainebleau forest

Description

Designated, along with its surrounding region and the Gâtinais Regional Nature Park, as a "biosphere reserve" by UNESCO, it is one of the largest and most beautiful state-owned forests in France.
Considered the “Green Lung” of the Île-de-France region, the Fontainebleau Forest spans more than 17,000 hectares in a single contiguous area, extended by the 3,300 hectares of the Trois Pignons State Forest, giving it the advantage of offering varied landscapes and exceptional sites.

Numerous facilities have been developed to accommodate visitors.
The Forest Education Center (CIF), an educational facility, welcomes groups of schoolchildren and adults throughout the year.

In 2013, the Fontainebleau National Forest became the first in France to be designated a “Forêt d’exception” (Exceptional Forest), a distinction recognizing its rich heritage and biodiversity.

Ninety percent of the Fontainebleau forest is now open to the public. Following the fires, the affected areas of the forest (primarily the Forêt des 3 Pignons, La Faisanderie, and Apremont sectors) remain closed to the public for safety reasons. As a result, some trails and routes through the forest may have been altered. Before visiting, please consult the interactive map of open and closed areas available below.

The summer of 2026 highlighted the fragility of this exceptional natural environment. We are counting on you to follow these best practices during your walks through the Pays de Fontainebleau and its forest!
▪️ Respect areas where access is prohibited
▪️ Stay on authorized and marked trails
▪️ Do not enter areas affected by wildfires or marked as dangerous
▪️ Do not light fires or smoke in the forest
▪️ Take your trash with you
▪️ Report any fire to 18
