A family trail in the heart of the Chaîne des Puys between woods and pastures, with a vast view of Clermont, Limagne and the Monts du Forez from the Ternant cross. As an added bonus, for the more courageous, we recommend an off-tour to the Sarcoui cave and the puy des Goules. Departure point: Parking des Goules, direction "Monlachat". Difficulty: Very easy; steeper climb for the off-route to grotte du Sarcoui and puy des Goules. Snowshoeing possible in snowy weather.

Start : Courdemanges Marking : Yellow 1. Head for Dontreix, turn right at the 1st crossroads, then take the 1st path on the right. 2. When you reach the road, turn right towards Courdemanges. 3. At the 1st crossroads, turn right through the village to the well, turn left and then immediately right. 4.Before reaching Valette, turn right towards the Drouille forest. 5.Continue straight ahead through the woods until you come to a path on the right which leads to the forest track. 6.Follow the track to the right to reach the starting point.

A great classic to be done or redone in all seasons, in fine weather to enjoy the exceptional panorama from the "Géant des Dômes". Depart from the "Maison de Site" and climb the goat path. The descent is by cogwheel train. Leave the old Puy-de-Dôme road at the caravan park. Follow signs for "La Font-de-l'Arbre". Difficulty: Gradual but continuous ascent from the "Chemin des Gouris" crossroads. Several variants are possible using the Muleteers' path and the Puy de Dôme tour footpath. Difficult to negotiate in winter (snow/ice); return by cogwheel train at a charge.

A long, easy walk between the wild, unspoilt plateaus of La Bade and Champ Griaud. This is where Auvergne's vineyards have survived, as evidenced by the many plots still in use and the astonishing cellar district at Châteaugay. A route that offers great views over the town and surrounding mountains. Start: Place Ballofy, Blanzat, direction "Les Mauvaises" / place du Général Charles-de-Gaulle, Châteaugay Difficulty: Ascent from Blanzat to Plateau de la Bade Suitable for all seasons. Disregard the crosses indicating the wrong direction, which are not part of the Clermont Communauté itineraries.

The motte and bailey castle of Queuille is still visible. Built on raised earth it was a wooden fortified structure, which today has dissapeared. The view point of the meander of Queuille is right next door. Complete the discovery of this site with the heritage sheet N°11, Queuille, Excursion to paradise. The viewpoint of Queuille, called 'paradise', allows you to appreciate an unspoilt view of this sublime meander, a huge loop created by the river Sioule. Leave your car at the church, access on foot. Other meanders exist on the river Sioule, those of Montfermy, Châteauneuf-les-Bains or Pont-de-Menat (Rochocol).

As a result of an early implantation of Christianity, a parish existed in Comps probably before the 10th century. It was the original parish: the chief place was transferred to the Ancizes a little more than a century ago (3 March 1885) because of its increased importance, but the communal center is fixed in Comps before the Revolution, around the graceful church dedicated to Notre Dame which has kept Romanesque characters. Listed as a historical monument in 1961 and restored in recent years. Above the south portal, the cornice is marked by a series of expressive modillions, usually with human or animal heads (donkey heads for example). The interior of the building is harmonious, with the nave and the left collateral vaulted in broken barrel and the right collateral, vaulted with edges. The religious furniture is varied and of quality with a remarkable pieta of the classical period (vigorously repainted), a saint Anthony of the 16th century and a Virgin in majesty, classified, probably dating from the early 13th century. It is quite rough, carved wood mounted and painted, and the position of the child (whose head was redone in the 17th century) quite awkward. This Romanesque church shines in its green setting of the village of Comps.

The Gorges of the Sioule splendid and steep, unfold from the dam at Queuille to Ebrèuil in the Allier. A successions of meanders and a picturesque road which snakes along the banks of the river Sioule. Discover them by car, on foot, by canoe or fishing! The Gorges de la Sioule spread out from the Queuille dam (Puy-de-Dôme) to Ébreuil (in the Allier). This means that the area is very hilly. The magnificent, steep gorges are looked over by Château-Rocher and by the Château de Chouvigny. A series of turns illustrate the presence of rocks made from contrasting materials. The Gorges de la Sioule and the Gorges de Chouvigny are listed as ZNIEFFs (areas of importance with regard to ecology, flora and fauna) and the entire Sioule basin is a Natura 2000 zone. A pretty little road winds alongside the river, but in summer, canoes are another way of exploring the region. It is also a fishing paradise.

The Chartreuse Port-Sainte-Marie, founded in 1219, on the banks of the Sioule in a protected natural setting, is the only medieval charterhouse in Auvergne. This monastery marked the history of Combrailles for more than five centuries. Abandoned during the Revolution, one can now walk through the remains of this old charterhouse to discover the organization of a Carthusian monastery and how hermit monks lived in this community. The site is listed as a historic monument because of its archaeological potential. Guided tours are available every Thursday in summer, and on request, all year round for groups. The association of Friends of the Charterhouse ensures the protection of this site and initiates artistic, cultural and heritage activities. The Charterhouse has made its mark on economic and cultural history throughout Combrailles, and as far as Limagne, for more than five centuries. Abandoned to the Revolution, its goods were scattered, in particular, in the neighboring churches (Manzat, Pontgibaud). Today, the remains of the monument highlighted by the Friends of the Charterhouse association, allow us to understand the architectural organization of a Charterhouse. The site, the medieval layers of which remain untouched, has a major archaeological potential for understanding the Carthusian architectural evolution. The association of the Friends of the Charterhouse Port Ste Marie, has been ensuring for more than forty years the safeguard and the enhancement of the site via volunteer projects. Each year, cultural and artistic projects are undertaken, in particular with the children of the Combrailles schools who, along with local artists, create items which are installed on the site for the summer period, alongside a short story competition and an artistic competition. Visits with workshops can be offered to school or peri-educational structures. Educational tools are available on the association's website. The association's volunteers offer guided tours every Thursday and Sunday afternoon during the summer period and on request all year round for groups. These visits can be supplemented by hikes combining heritage discovery and discovery of the natural environment of the Sioule valley. During the summer period, you can explore old games, a box of books and undertake step by step watercolour painting.

The viaduct of Fades (1901-1909) is an exceptional piece of work, over 100m high. The two brick built piers of the bridge are the highest ever built in traditional masonary. The viaduct over looks the Valley of the Sioule. A masterpiece of the good times civil engineering, this giant structure, which spans the Sioule valley at a height of 133 m, was the highest bridge in the world when it was inaugurated in 1909. It still ranks second on the list of Europe's highest railway bridges, behind the Mala-Rijeka viaduct in Montenegro. Its two twin piers built in traditional masonry culminate at more than 92 m above their foundations; as a result, they still hold the world height record for this type of pier. The surface area of their base is comparable to that of a tennis court! While other viaducts play on the elegance of the curves, the Fades viaduct sees the rigour of the straight beam triumph. A veritable steel cathedral (375 m long, 12 m high and 8 m wide!), its deck is one of the most beautiful specimens of its kind. Since the Lapeyrouse-Volvic line, on which it used to run, ceased operating in December 2007, the protection of this monumental work of art - listed as a Historic Monument and labelled "20th century heritage" - remains the major concern of the Sioule et Patrimoine association.

The waterfall of the 3 vats of Chambonnet is one of the best kept secrets of the Combrailles. The stream of the Cubes descends successively into 3 natural potholes and forms a waterfall, in the heart of the forest. From the small hamlet of Chambonnet, with its old church transformed into a dwelling and its footbridge over the Sioule river, you can access the 3 vats. However, the waterfall may run out of water in times of drought.

A vast reservoir/lake with 3 beaches (supervised in July and August): Confolent, Le Pont du Bouchet (Miremont) and La Chazotte (Saint Jacques d'Ambur). Childrens play areas and picnic areas. A very popular fishing spot. A lake of 385 hectares, it is a favourite place for bathers when the heat is high. Several restaurants offer pleasant terraces with a view of the lake. Finally, pike, carp, perch and pike-perch await the fishermen for pleasant fishing trips.
