A great classic for all seasons: when the weather is fine, the ascent offers an exceptional panorama from the "Géant des Dômes".
Starting from the Maison de Site, the route takes the Chemin des Chèvres to gradually reach the slopes of the Puy de Dôme. The climb is steady but sustained from the Chemin des Gouris crossroads, before reaching the vast panoramas of the summit.
The descent is then made by cogwheel train (for a fee), for a comfortable ride back to the starting point.
The route can also be started from the old Puy de Dôme road at the caravan park, following the signs for "La Font-de-l'Arbre".
Several variants are possible, depending on your level of ability:
- via the sentier des Muletiers, the historic route to the summit ;
- via the "tour du puy de Dôme" hiking trail, which offers other views of the volcano.
In winter, the itinerary may be difficult to follow due to snow or icy conditions: appropriate equipment is recommended, and extra care must be taken to monitor weather conditions.
