The Hautes Chaumes is a protected natural site of vast rolling high-altitude plateaux (above 1,400m) on the upper slopes of the Monts du Forez mountains. Your ideal starting point for many a hiking trail! Human occupation can be traced back a long way, as witnessed by the jasserie chalets where fourme de Montbrison cheese was made. Overlooking the village of Chalmazel, the fortified house of Marcilly Talaru's family is surprisingly authentic. Indeed it has kept its high round towers with machicolations and its parapet walk.

Chalmazel church has a complete serie of stained glass windows signed by Théodore Gérard Hanssen (1855-1957), master glazier who revolutionized the art of stained glass. An audio guide with the voice of Brigitte Fossey is installed and available free of charge depending on opening hours.
