Throughout medieval Occitania, the romieu, or romiu (sometimes francised as "roumieu"), is the pilgrim: both the one who goes to Rome and the one who takes the same paths but heads west, walking towards Santiago de Compostela. Between Azille and Carcassonne, a rare occurrence, the trace of these pilgrimages has been inscribed in the toponymy: an old path still bears the name of camin romieu. Towns crossed : Carcassonne, Villemoustaussou, Villalier, Villedubert, Bouilhonnac, Malves-en-Minervois, Laure-Minervois, Aigues-Vives, Saint-Frichoux, Peyriac-Minervois, Rieux-Minervois, Azille, Pépieux Signs : Red and white Itinéraire : * WARNING: This is a global description of the part from Azille to Carcassonne. For more details on this trail, the purchase of the IGN map or the guidebook is recommended. Passing by the lake of Jouarres and the village of Azille, reach Rieux Minervois and discover its heptagonal church and its sculptures by the Master of Cabestany as well as the statue of St Jacques, on the way to Compostela (pilgrim accommodation). From Azille to Peyriac-Minervois, the path follows the old railway line from Moux to Caunes-Minervois, which is now a shaded greenway. Once in Peyriac-Minervois, it bends southwards to reach Saint-Frichoux, a village on a small hill overlooking the depression of the Marseillette's swampland. From there, the path heads west again, towards Malves-en-Minervois (pilgrim accommodation) to Carcassonne along the canal du Midi  (shared route with the GR36.) You can then carry on the chemin de St Jacques de Compostelle (Way of St. James) to Fanjeaux, Mirepoix etc...

A family walk along the Canal du Midi Signs: Yellow markings Start from the Port. In front of the canal, turn left to take the passage of the tree nurseries (direction North), then cross the RD 11 and the cemetery parking lot. Climb the embankment and go along the cemetery wall (direction North). At the path, turn left and go down along the cemetery, then turn right onto a path lined with many olive trees (direction East). In front of the canal, turn left and cross the bridge over the Argent-Double river, "Le Passelis". Follow the towpath. You will pass in front of "La Dinée", currently the operation centre of the Voies Navigables de France (Navigable Waterways of France), then in front of the "Drain de La Dinée" or aqueduct, on the left, which collects by drainage the waters of the plain of Azille. Pass over the stone bridge of the Canal du Midi, on the right (direction South). Go towards the “Métairie (farmhouse) du Bois”, which is bypassed on the left. You will soon pass the old (dilapidated) lavoir of the Métairie. Then take the path on the right just before the small lake (trout fishing). Go along the Argent-Double river and cross the "Petit Bois" which is much appreciated for its shade in the summer. Cross the river on a small bridge. We arrive in front of the Epanchoir. Climb up to the Epanchoir and cross it. Pass under the bridge of the RD 11 and continue along the canal until the next bridge (road of Puichéric), turn right to cross the bridge. At the end of the bridge, turn left into a small passageway that goes down towards the port.

The old "Moux/Caunes-Minervois" railway line has been converted into a hiking trail between Puichéric and Caunes Minervois linking six villages from the plain to the foothills.It is a transverse axis that provides access to other hiking loops. Signs: Yellow and Green markings (white background) Start at the foot of the church in front of the Jardin de la Paix, where the sign indicating the “Chemin vert” line connecting Puichéric to Caunes-Minervois is located.  Take the street named "L. Pasteur" up to the roundabout in front of the town hall (former train station). Take the 5th street on the right and go past the municipal buildings to join the old railway line. Cross the iron bridge over the Canal du Midi and carry on along the paved road for about 1.5km/0.9mi and then on a tarred road to the village of La Redorte. At the entrance of the village, turn right onto the D72. Before the bridge, on the right-hand side, go down the small pedestrian crossing then go under the bridge and cross the Port de la Fabrique until you see the Chemin Vert information panel. Continue on Avenue du Port, turn right just before the iron bridge on the Roman road. At the crossroads with the D11, turn left and 30m/100ft further on turn right onto the old railway line. Then turn left on avenue Jean Jaurès, go past the community centre and continue until you reach the Place de l'Eglise. Turn right on avenue du Languedoc for about 150m/500ft and opposite the entrance to the underpass of the Château de La Redorte, turn right via the alley of plane trees and cross the Saint-Georges bridge over the river "l'Argent Double". Just after the demolished bridge, turn left to go alongside and take the old railway line. At the junction with the D72, turn right for 200m/650ft until the crossroads. Turn left for about 250m/820ft (on the left there is the old Azille train station). At the junction with the rue de la Restanque, go past the Chemin Vert information panel and continue upwards. While following the signs, at the crossroads turn left in the direction of the Place aux Herbes. Cross it, continue on rue du Commerce and immediately on the right, take rue de la Poste. Arriving on the Allées Pol Lapeyre, turn left and continue your walk on the Allées de la République until you reach the Place César Franck (famous composer). Turn right and walk down the rue du Théron and just before the demolished bridge, go up the embankment on the right to find the old railway. At the crossroads with the tarred road, continue straight ahead in the direction of the D206 and cross it. Leave the château de Floris (private estate) on the left. Cross the iron bridge over the Canet stream and enjoy this section of the trail, surrounded by pine trees and vines. At the concrete path, turn right, go up for 100m/320ft then turn left , and continue on the path until you reach the intersection with a small tarred road. The markings will take you over the small culvert to the Chapelle du Bout du Pont and the information panel of the Chemin Vert de Rieux-Minervois. Cross the bridge over the Argent-Double river, go straight ahead on rue Notre-Dame. Turn left on rue du Barry (ramparts on the left) then right up rue Saint Blaise (on the right the Saint Blaise tower). Go past the Tourist Information Center and the Sainte-Marie heptagonal church. In front of the town hall, on the left place du Général Bousquet then on the right on avenue Louis Cros D11. At the post office, go into the rue du Château and opposite the school, take the rue du Moulin towards the boulodrome (boules/pétanque sports ground). Continue straight ahead, go along the distillery and continue in the direction of the village of Peyriac-Minervois where you will find the Chemin Vert information panel at the entrance. Continue straight ahead, rue de la porte rouge and at the crossroads, turn right and go down rue des Tonneliers until you reach Place de la Libération. Continue on the borders of the river "l' Argent Double". At the crossroads, take the rue des Mauves opposite and then the chemin des Prades. Next intersection, turn left for 200m/650ft then right. At the end of the tarmac road, in the middle of the vineyards, take the dirt track on your left and leave the private estate of Pautard on your right. Arriving on an olive tree alley, turn left towards the water tower, then straight ahead and leave the hamlet Tinal d'Abrens (commune of Laure-Minervois) on your left. Continue the hike until you reach the old railway line. At the level of the culvert, take the dirt track on the right along a tree hedge. Once you have passed the recycling centre, go into the pine alley. Cross the D115 and continue straight ahead on the old railway line in the direction of Caunes-Minervois. In the trading estate, join the D115, turn left for about 300m/985ft and you will arrive at the old railway station at the end of the Chemin Vert.

On a trail through the garrigue, enjoy a breathtaking view once you reach the ridges, then make your way back down through pine forests and vineyards.  Yellow Trail Markers  Start at Place du Château in Comigne. Take Rue de la Mairie, then at the fork, take Rue de la Boulangerie toward the stadium.  Once there, pass the sign for the “Sur les Crêtes de l’Alaric” loop, then head due south through the garrigue (low-growing vegetation on limestone soil) until you reach the GR36.  At the fork, turn left toward the “Bouscat” countryside, which you’ll leave on your right, and continue on the GR36 toward Le Signal.  After 2.5 km, turn left through the dwarf holm oaks—their stunted growth is due to exposure to strong winds. Follow the trail as it descends and winds through the pine forest; note the presence of a huge holly tree. Then take the rocky mule trail at the bottom of the Combe de Migère, surrounded by limestone cliffs.  When you reach the vineyards, the trail markers will guide you through the middle of them.  Facing the highway, head back toward Comigne by taking the path to the left.  ********************************* The “Rando Grand Carcassonne” mobile app, available on Android and iOS, guides you on your hikes. Keep your eyes peeled, along this botanical trail, several breathtaking views await you. Admire the unique panoramic views to the south and north of the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire, and enjoy the themed interpretive signs dotted along the way.  Trail Markings: Yellow Rectangle Start from the parking lot at the Col du Fer à Cheval between Capendu and Montlaur.  Leave the parking lot by taking the trail that climbs, heading due west. At the top right, you’ll see the trail welcome sign (taking a photo of it will help you orient yourself as you proceed, relative to the locations of the various themed signs).  You are in the heart of the “Corbières Occidentales” Natura 2000 site; be sure to stay on the marked trail and carefully follow the yellow rectangular markers.  Continue along the winding trail for one kilometer, then at the intersection, turn right onto a gentle uphill section. Enjoy the remarkable views to the south and north, overlooking the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire.  In the wooded area, the southern part of the Capendu communal forest managed by the ONF (National Forest Office), at the small clearing where you’ll find a themed sign, turn left. This small pass was once a route to Montlaur. Shortly after, at the busy Y-shaped intersection, you’ll find yourself at a crossroads. Pay close attention to the yellow rectangular markers. Turn left.  You’re already on your way back. About 200 m further on, on your right, is the last interpretive sign. Enjoy the extraordinary view of part of the Pyrenees. 

The vineyard was settled in Languedoc by the Romans. For centuries, it rubbed shoulders with the olive tree plantation and was under the strong domination of cereals. Only a few ruins of windmills remain from the cereal-farming era, on the promontories near the villages. This loop allows you to observe the “couloir Audois” (Aude Corridor) criss-crossed by communication routes, the settlement of the villages and to recall the evolution of southern agriculture. Signs: Yellow markings topped by a square of the same colour The departure is in the heart of the village of Capendu, “place de la Mairie”, in front of the sign.  Pass in front of the post office and take the direction of Montlaur-Val de Dagne. Be careful when passing through the level crossing ! Continue under the highway bridge. First right-angle turn to the left, take the path going outwards below. It winds through the vineyards to the D 57. Turn right again, continue for about 600m/1970ft, just after a safety rail on the right-hand side of the road, inside the bend, take the uphill path. Small slope, in the shade of holm oaks and white oaks, very pleasant in hot weather. Turn right and as you progress, take the time to observe the "couloir audois" (Aude corridor) criss-crossed by communication routes, the villages and in the background the Montagne Noire (Black Mountain). Through the scree, the descent begins and then take the path that leads through the pines. Once at the bottom, cross the vineyard and turn right onto the path, first paved then tarred, which leads to the hamlet of "Font de Roque".

A hike suitable for both families and experienced hikers.  Trail markers: yellow + red “M” logo  Park in front of the cooperative winery, then walk to the starting point by following the trail markers. Take Rue Marcellin Albert toward the village. At the bend, turn right onto Rue Nationale, then immediately left onto Rue des Remparts. Continue to Place Neuve, then turn right and pass under the stone archway to reach the trailhead.  Start and finish: Place de la Tour de Trencavel. Take the small street heading north, following the yellow markings with a red “M.” Pass Place Vieille, then take the small Rue Saint-Martin and turn right onto Rue de la Pompe. At the intersection, turn right again.  At the next intersection, turn left this time. At the Y-shaped intersection, turn left again (heading north). Further on, following the trail markers, cross the Canet stream (which may be dry) and pass by a house on the right (the former Paulignan sheepfold).  Continue straight ahead, and 400 meters further on, at a trail junction, turn left uphill (north).  On this climb, look for the dolmen “Les allées couvertes de Jappeloup” on the right side of the trail.  Arrive at the Saint Roch Chapel and its water source. A lime kiln is located 100 meters above, on the right (private property). Continue toward Trausse-Minervois. At the intersection with the cross, take the path straight ahead (south), then turn left onto Rue Saint Roch and left again onto Place Vieille to return to Place de la Tour de Trencavel. 

A trail for experienced hikers, featuring challenging climbs and stunning views. With ridgelines, steep ascents, and sections through the woods, this challenging route is sure to surprise you!  Trail Markings: yellow  Start at the welcome sign located in the parking lot across from the community center, walk behind it. At the end, turn right and head up the old Capendu trail.  When you reach a junction, turn right and continue straight for about one kilometer.  At a grassy pass, you can shorten the trail by about 2.6 km by taking the “Variante” trail to the right, which descends. Otherwise, tackle the steep climb straight ahead (130 m elevation gain).  Reach the ridge line and head right, following the route shared with the GR 36 (marked with red and white) as well as another trail (marked with a yellow cross). A little further on your left, a short round-trip path will take you to a superb viewpoint.  Return to the original path, then continue through the woods—a very pleasant walk in the summer.  Once again, a directional sign pointing to the right will lead you down a slope for about 1 km toward the Roquenégade farm; you are now on your way back. At the very bottom, you’ll pass through olive groves and vineyards.  At the trail, turn right and stay on it for about 1.3 km. Another sign will direct you to turn right into a field and head to the top of it. It’s a short climb, but you’ll enjoy the view, the vegetation, and the stroll along a path that will lead you into a small valley toward the village, where you’ll return to the parking lot.  Tips: Don’t forget your water bottle and a hat. We do not recommend hiking the entire trail in the summer, as the ascent is very sunny.
