Discover the Hidden Gems of Huy, Liege, Liege

The matrimony refers to material and immaterial goods having artistic or historical importance inherited from women. This walk proposed by the collective Les Créatrices 8 wich brings together the energies of the non-profit Vie Féminine with Center Cultural Huy and aims to introduce the female sculptors who hide behind their work. The desire of this collective is to promote the equality of women and men by particularly highlighting the less visible artistic heritage of female sculptors in the Huy's public space.

This building dates from around the middle of the 18th century and is built over four levels of decreasing heights across a width of three bays. Converted into retail space in 1986, the composition of the ground floor is more in keeping with the style of the 18th century and the features of the upper floors. It has a limestone base, with an elevation in brick and limestone, like the remainder of the façade. The building's horizontal and vertical features are emphasised by a series of bands, enhanced by the cross wall pilasters that flank the façade. A limestone ledge links the walls to the pitched roof. The gable end retains signs of a lower block-built wall and has modern window openings dating from 1985-86, like the changes made to the rear wall. Building listed on 18th December 1984    

This house dates from the very end of the 17th century and was originally part of a larger group of buildings that also includes number 18. The house itself is over three and a half levels and makes extensive use of brick and limestone, characteristic of the developed Mosan style. The ground floor, which is now a retail space, has lost its character, whereas there have been more minor modifications to the doors and windows. As a result, only the windows in the attic still have their transom. Broad modillions of limestone on the façade support the ledge and slate roof. The rear wall, the ground floor of which has been modified like all of the other floors, is made up of whitewashed timber facing with brick in-fills. Building listed on 26th November 1973  

Dating from the very end of the 17th century, this house was once part of the same building as number 16. Built over three and a half levels with extensive use of brick and limestone, characteristic of the developed Mosan style. The ground floor shows the inevitable signs of alterations but retains the 19th century frontage of a pharmacy. The windows show the same clear changes over time: their uprights have been lowered and the transoms have disappeared. Broad modillions of limestone support the ledge and slate roof. The rear wall, the ground floor of which has also been modified like, is made up of whitewashed timber facing with brick in-fills. It is adjoined by modern annexes. Building listed on 26th November 1973    

This building dating from the beginning of the 18th century extends over three levels of brick and limestone. The ground floor was totally converted into retail space in 1987-88 as part of developments that also altered the rear of the building. Other alterations, albeit more limited, affect the six window bays that have lost their crossbar. Uncovered by the works in the 1980s, the gable wall retains a large bricked-up oculus window on the ground floor with a limestone frame. Building listed on 24th August 1989    

Dating back to the first half of the 17th century, this townhouse with its courtyard at the front separating it from an adjacent road, is built over three levels, each decreasing in height. The last of these consists of heightening work to the building carried out at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. As with numerous houses in Huy, the building consists of a limestone base topped with whitewashed brick and limestone walls. It has side-alternate quoins and bands that emphasise the sills, window cross-rails and lintels that have lost their windows or else the sill have been lowered. A hipped slate roof tops the building and several spur posts form a surround. The slender shape of the square tower gives the building its highly individual character. An 18th century annexe to the left of the main building gives it its overall appearance.  Building listed on 17th July 1978    

A fine example from the middle of the 16th century, this house is built over two and a half levels on a low limestone base. In addition to the use of the stone, the building is also distinguished by the presence in its ogee transom windows of a dripstone whose consoles are sculpted in the form of human heads. Some of these elements are restorations, some of which can also be seen on the façade to the right of the door. The windows also show signs of alterations, causing them to disappear by lowering the sills. Two square light wells precede a cornice with moulded corbels and a hipped slate roof. The rear wall is very similar to the main façade, except for an annexe built at right angles to it, with a bow window on the ground floor. An annexe constructed from limestone rubble to the left of the main part of the house could date back to the 18th century. Although recent, the openings include a porte-cochère and a cement-frame bay window, reflecting the ones in the neighbouring house. The rear wall of the annexe has been significantly modified over time. Building listed on 13th March 1972          

A gate with concave reveal and cross wall pilasters under capitals, built from brick and limestone, provides access to an interior courtyard edges with wings at this imposing townhouse from the second half of the 18th century (1776). Constructed in an L-shape, the building has a low bonded base wall. The main façade rises above this low wall with alternating brick and limestone emphasising the architectural elements. Frames with chamfered corners punctuate the succession of nine bays on the ground floor and seven on the first level, where two bay windows have been replaced with panel adorned with limestone. The doors and bay windows have retained all their neoclassical joinery, featuring frames with fluted uprights, sculpted with ova, grooves and roses, etc. A mansard roof with three dormer windows caps this main façade. Compared with this, the rear wing is much more sober and lacks the limestone decoration of the main frontage. The internal furnishings feature a rocaille-neoclassical transition staircase, as well as neoclassical fireplaces topped with stucco or wooden decorations sculpted in the rocaille style. The junction between the two wings is occupied by a solid wall of brick set back. This structure, visible on four levels (rue des Coucous), dates from the second half of the 17th century, and hence predates the wings that partially surround it by a century. Building listed on 11th June 1969  

Built in the middle of the 18th century on an older core, this building occupies the corner of rue l'Apleit and rue des Augustins, giving it a cut-off corner over the full height of the ground floor. The elevation features two and and half storeys above a bonded low wall, with extensive use of brick and limestone. Bands of limestone delineate the floors, while the window frames continue to the roof trusses, lit by oval windows. Abutments also edge the façade up to the cut-off corner. The gable end, where virtually all of the openings have been bricked up, is whitewashed brick and rubble. The whole building has a fibre-cement roof. The internal furnishings include an 18th century stucco fireplace.  Building listed on 14th May 1984      

Nothing remains of the Romanesque collegiate church besides the enormous crypt, which now houses superb treasures which include, among other items, the 12th-century Mosan reliquaries of St Mengold and St Domitian. Work on the present Gothic building began in the 14th century, but was not finished until the 16th century, with the installation of the largest rose window in Wallonia, li Rondia, and the completion of the very fine painted decoration. Remarkable for its two towers that delineate the chancel, with the north tower housing the bells, Huy church also features the very fine Bethlehem gate, located to the south of the chevet. Dating from the 14th century, the gate depicts three scenes of the Nativity and is one of the finest in Wallonia. An extensive restoration programme has been underway for the past fifteen years. Building in Meuse renaissance style (17th c.) with mullioned windows, stone cornices and back façade in red brick. Room in the attic of an old convent in the historical heart of the old city.
