The Hautes Chaumes is a protected natural site of vast rolling high-altitude plateaux (above 1,400m) on the upper slopes of the Monts du Forez mountains. Overlooking the village of Chalmazel, the fortified house of Marcilly Talaru's family is surprisingly authentic. Indeed it has kept its high round towers with machicolations and its parapet walk.

Chalmazel church has a complete serie of stained glass windows signed by Théodore Gérard Hanssen (1855-1957), master glazier who revolutionized the art of stained glass. An audio guide with the voice of Brigitte Fossey is installed and available free of charge depending on opening hours.
