Ideal for families with young children, this walk takes you on a pastoral trail through ancient alpine hamlets in the heart of the countryside. This gentle family hike starts from the parking lot at the entrance to the hamlet of Les Hières. Once parked, cross the main road through the village for 300m. Then follow the pastoral track for 2 km, surrounded by flower-filled fields, typical alpine hamlet houses and fountains, and the Maurian torrent, which rises much further up towards the Goléon. The return journey takes the same route as the outward journey.

Starting from the village of Les Hières (1770m), this route takes you up to the Aiguillon (2095m), a viewpoint offering 360° panoramic views of the Meije region. From the entrance to the village of Les Hières, follow the carriage path along the valley towards Valfroide /Entraigues. Cross the torrent du Maurian at the small wooden bridge on the right; Then take the narrow path up to l'Aiguillon. Allow 1h30 to reach the summit. For the return journey, follow the same route.

The Lac du Goléon site is only accessible to hikers after a tough climb from Valfroide; the proposed itinerary over the beautiful Cruq des Aiguilles pass offers a varied, more alpine alternative. From Les Hières, follow the good carriage road along the valley towards Valfroide and 500 m before the Entraigues parking lot, turn left onto the tractor track towards "La Sauce"; Cross the hamlet and climb (east) towards the "rognon de Serre Coupa"; spot and follow the path that winds steeply up the "côte Lombarde" and at around 2200 m reaches flatter grassland that leads to the ruins of Puy Garnier (2346 m). From this point continue northwards, crossing a small stream and continuing slightly uphill to pass close to the water catchment area (drinking water supply for the hamlets of La Grave). It's easy to spot the Cruq des Aiguilles, an attractive U-shaped pass 300 m higher up. Climb the first steep slope up to the ridge overlooking the valley (ruiniform rocks), then after a short flat at the foot of the pass, reach the pass via a steep, stony slope (2707 m). The descent to the refuge and lake takes place on the other side (east), over grassy slopes cut by small rocky outcrops. After a well-deserved break, take the steep, stony downhill path through hay meadows to the hamlets of Valfroide, then the wide track back to the starting point of the itinerary at Les Hières. PS: it is possible to drive from Les Hières to the parking lot at Entraigues, but the junction is difficult.

With incredible views of the mountains, the Goléon Lake hike is absolutely handsome, wildlife and alpine flowers will be waiting for you! ITINERARY Follow the dirt track from Les Hières and cross the lovely hamlet of Valfroide, where many houses still have stone roofs. Then follow the path up along the right-hand bank of the Maurian mountain stream. The path gently climbs through a large field and then becomes gradually steeper over the rock sill. You’ll have then to continue zigzaging. After skirting round some rocky outcrops, you’ll reach the top of the rock sill, which marks the beginning of the valley sheltering the lake and the refuge of Goléon. You then join the refuge (on your left) in a few minutes, in the alpine pastures. If you feel like it, you can continue your walk along the lake on the left side, spectacular panorama guaranteed !

The Signal de La Grave towers a thousand meters above the Romanche valley. Its summit offers a panoramic view of the entire canton. It also offers exceptional views of the northern slopes of the Meije. The summit also offers a view of the Goléon peak and the Martignare valley, which opens the door to Savoie. The climb from La Grave is steep and south-facing, so it's best to start early in the morning. Loop details : From the "plate-forme" at Ventelon, go up the hamlet and take the good track that leads to "Les Clots" (1916 m), past the fountain and 100 m further on, turn right onto the path that climbs up. At the next fork in the road, turn right towards Celle des Juges, then 200 m further on, leave the path which continues up the steep Cote Belle slope; follow the path, in places poorly marked, which leads to a small collet (2252 m) on the Signal ridge, and follow it to the right to the summit (2446 m) (cairn). Descend by the same route as before, but when you reach the collet, continue along the "côte rouge" ridge: reach the top of the Chazelet lifts and descend to the left towards Les Clots. Then follow the same route back down to Ventelon.

Loop from La Grave to the hamlet of Ventelon. From the Tourist Office, head up through the village towards the church, leaving it on your left and continuing straight on uphill. Pass the last houses and quickly fork right towards Ventelon. At the top of the path, cross the road and pick it up again on the opposite side to cut the hairpin bend in the road. Once back on the road, pass the sheepfold and continue around the bend to the left towards the hamlet of Les Terrasses. At the entrance to the hamlet, fork left to take the small road leading downhill. At the end of this road, the GR54 starts, taking you back to La Grave via the "Champs Lombards".

At the next junction, turn right towards Celle des Juges, then 200 m further on, leave the path which continues up the steep Cote Belle slope; follow the path, in places poorly marked, which leads to a small collet (2252 m) on the Signal ridge, and follow it to the right as far as the summit (2446 m) (cairn). Descend by the same route as before, but when you reach the collet, continue along the "côte rouge" ridge: reach the top of the Chazelet lifts and turn right towards Les Plagnes. Once you've reached a good track, turn left and continue along it, passing under the small state forest, as far as the oratory (orientation table); cross the small road and take the GR 54 opposite, which leads to Les Terrasses and then across the "champs Lombards" to La Grave.

Until the 1970s, the letter carrier made his rounds on foot. Follow in his footsteps along the GR54 trail from La Grave to Le Chazelet. Your path will be embellished by painted flower "stamps" that the letter carrier may have lost along the way. From the La Grave tourist office, walk up through the village towards the church, leaving it on your left, and continue straight on uphill, passing the last houses until you come across the first painted sign illustrating "le facteur". At the first little hairpin, you should already have discovered three small panels explaining the following plants: "Centaury", "Yellow Foxglove" and "Aster". Continue along the steep path in front of you, cutting across the next hairpin. You're now on the GR54 path up the "Champs Lombards" to the village of Les Terrasses. Once you've reached the foot of Les Terrasses village, take the small path in front of you (not on the right). Pass the "Le Bleuet" house and continue up the street through the village. Look out for 5 small signs. Continue past the "Saint Matthieu" church, then cross the road to take the small path to the right of the fountain. Once at the top of the path, you'll take a short stretch of road, and at the first fork in the road on your right, pick up the path again to go behind the house above the cemetery. Cross the road again to pick up the path in front of you. You're now at the Col des Portes at 1835m, where you'll find the Oratoire du Chazelet and the Perchoir. Take the road down towards the village of Le Chazelet, and at the next junction keep to the left. The last small signpost is opposite the "Relais d'Emparis". From Le Chazelet, return down the same path or via the chapel of Notre Dame de Bon Repos.

From the tourist office in La Grave, follow the departmental road to the village exit in the direction of Villar d'arène. Opposite the "Le Sérac" hotel, take the narrow road towards the arboretum. At the foot of the slope, go straight on to cross the Romanche river and cross the bridge. Take the path to the left of the bridge. At the fork, follow the GR50/54 up towards Les Vernois. Here, the Tabuchet glacier and the Meije dominate. Continue, then cross the Chal d'Outre wood on a wide path. The path leads to a small bridge to enter the village of Villar d'arène, follow the GR50/54 without crossing it to continue the hike. Continue along the Romanche for around 45 minutes. At the "Pont des Brebis", turn left to join the small road to Arsine, near the campsite or gîte. On the return journey, take the same route as the outward journey to Villar d'Arène, then cross the bridge over the Durance. Pass the Eglise Saint-Martin, then follow the Romanche until you cross it again a little further on. Continue until you reach the original route. A river, La Romanche, and fish-filled high altitude lakes such as Lac du Pontet and Lac Noir, as well as a turquoise-colored lake, are sure to please. When you buy a fishing card from a dealer, you automatically become a member of the Association Agréée de Pêche et de Protection des Milieux Aquatiques (Association for Fishing and Protection of Aquatic Environments) on which the dealer depends. The price of a fishing pass enables the Associations to carry out their missions: monitoring fishing, negotiating and exploiting fishing rights for the benefit of a large number of anglers, fish management and restocking, and protecting species and aquatic environments. The Romanche : A steep river, the Romanche rises beneath the La Plate des Agneaux glacier (in the northern part of the Ecrins National Park) and flows into the Drac south of Grenoble. A superb river. The upper Alpine limit of the Romanche stops below the village of La Grave. On this upstream section, from the source, you can fish for fario trout and brook salmon in a fabulous setting with the Col du Lautaret and the emblematic peaks of the Écrins as a backdrop. Below the village of Villar d'Arène, the Romanche quickly becomes powerful. Positions and counter-currents are well marked. The fishing here is very fast, and you need to be quick on your feet and very attentive, otherwise you'll miss a lot of fish that often go unnoticed. Access is easy from the D1091, and there are several bridges. Arsine lake: A small lake is located near Villar d'Arène at the Arsine bridge: the Arsine lake. Here, we fish for fario trout and rainbow trout in accordance with 1st category watercourse regulations. Nearby high-altitude lakes: Several high-altitude lakes surround the canton of La Grave and Villar d'Arène. Some are renowned for their fishing, such as Lac Le Noir, Lac de Puy Vachier, Lac du Goléon and Lac du Pontet. "You can get there after a few hours' hiking. Loaded down with all your gear, you sometimes have to get yourself motivated to get over the last climb. The cable car takes you up to the Ruillans Pass. At 3211m above sea level, at the Girose Glacier not far from La Meije ! You will be able to contemplate a grandiose panorama and see different peaks from the Vercors range to the Mont Blanc massif. The ascent is made in 2 sections from 1450 to 3200m in about 30 minutes. At 3200m, there's a high-altitude restaurant, orientation tables and a magnificent panorama. At 2400m: pretty meadows for a panoramic picnic, a nice walk to the Puy Vachier lake and the Chancel refuge. A breathtaking panorama at the foot of the glaciers to discover with family and friends. On arrival, you'll be greeted by orientation tables and a high-altitude chalet restaurant with a large wooden terrace. You'll find deckchairs where you can soak up the sun, admire the breathtaking scenery and relax! Mountain biking and hiking trails are available in summer. Right under your feet, the Girose Glacier! The panorama takes in the Belledonne massif, the Thabor, the Aravis and Mont Blanc. 360° of breathtaking views! Roped up and assisted by the advice of a mountain professional, the glacier's gaping crevasses can be approached (outings on the Glacier de la Girose organized by the Bureau des Guides). Trail de la Meije adapts to everyone's desires, offering 3 routes on Sunday and a vertical kilometer on Saturday. These routes will take runners around La Grave, Villar d'Arène and their hamlets, along some of the most legendary trails in the Hautes-Alpes. Indeed, there's something for everyone, from Kv+ to Marathon, 26km or 15km, not forgetting a children's race and a course suitable for joëlettes. THE DIFFERENT ROUTES : THE FRÉAUX VERTICAL KILOMETER Distance: 4.8 km & 1200 D+ (vertical kilometer) To warm up for Sunday's races, a vertical kilometer is proposed on Saturday, with the participation of Les Téléphériques des Glaciers de la Meije. The program includes 4.8km and 1200m D+, starting at Les Fréaux and climbing steeply to the Puy Vachier lake and the Chancel refuge. At the top, a refreshment station awaits you and you can enjoy the view, before reaching the station at 2400m and taking the gondola back down to La Grave. LA BOUCLE DE L'AIGUILLON 16 km & 750 D+ This route takes in the Haute Romanche valley in a dream landscape, facing the Meije. It's a pretty loop that will take you on a quick tour of the canton's mythical sites. Starting at the village hall in La Grave, you'll pass through this authentic mountain village, then climb up to the banks of the Romanche in a larch forest, where the river refreshes you before entering the village of Villar d'Arène. The first refreshment station awaits you on the square in front of St Martin's church. Afterwards, the climb up to Lac du Pontet gives you a chance to get some height and look down on the valley from above. After a short, fairly rolling balcony traverse, you'll find yourself at the Col de l'Aiguillon. All that remains is to descend to the village and return to La Grave via the river in the Ecrins National Park. THE MEIJE TROPHY 27 km & 1634 D+ This route takes in a multitude of mountain landscapes. Starting on a small single in a larch forest, runners then cross terraced mountain pastures before arriving at a high-altitude lake. The race then reaches its highest point at 2707m, with an obligatory stop at the Goléon refuge. The second part of the route features a beautiful panorama of the Meije and a descent along a ridge line overlooking the canton. Competitors on the 42km will then switch to the vallon de la Buffe, where you'll reach the hamlet of Le Chazelet, before a final descent through the slate to the village of La Grave. THE MEIJE MARATHON 45 km & 2,500 D+ (altitude gain) This marathon trail takes you deeper into the remote corners of Meije country, starting in La Grave. It's a rolling but demanding course, with an average altitude of over 1,600 meters and a high point of 2,707 meters. From the highest point, the view of the Goléon refuge and its lake is one of the finest in the canton. After the Col du Cruq, a bit of well-marked "off-trail" awaits you to reach the Signal de La Grave and a beautiful panoramic descent over the ridge. Next, head for the Pic du Mas de la Grave refuge, before tackling the final climb to the famous Plateau d'Emparis. In September, this mountain plateau bears a striking resemblance to the famous South American altiplano. A loop on this plateau takes you to two mountain lakes with views of the Écrins massif. Finally, a long descent takes you back to the village of La Grave.

The Gravelotte campsite is at the foot of the Meije (3982 m) located, just near La Grave village and has 50 wide quality places, plus the swimming pool. It has all the facilities you will need. This friendly campsite is a 10-minute walk from the village of La Grave, its shops, its market every Thursday morning and the Glaciers de la Meije cable car. The accessible refuge du Goléon awaits you summer and winter alike, in an exceptional setting between lake and Meije. The wardens warmly welcome you to spend the night or grab a bite to eat in this little refuge of character. The hut keepers, Myrtille and Lucile, welcome you, with a big smile, to the hut located near Goléon Lake, facing La Meije. Nestled in the Goléon valley, near the lake (200 meters) and facing La Meije, the Goléon hut welcomes you in an exceptional setting. Made of stone and wood, this building, built in 2009 by its owner will seduce you with its rustic beauty. In summer the place is ideal to spend a night with family or friends in a warm and authentic mountain hut. In winter, the valley lends itself perfectly to ski touring. Don't hesitate to stay several nights to explore the hidden corners of this beautiful valley. Drinks and lunch à la carte, half-board or dinner, breakfast only (booking in advance is required). They cook as much as possible with local, seasonal and organic products. Fishing (in authorized period) : in the lake of Goléon is possible. The lake is stocked with brook & brown trouts by the fishing federation. The lake is classified 1st category. Fishing will be open from the 3rd Saturday of June to the 2nd Sunday of October. At the foot of the Lautaret Mountain pass, under the summits and glaciers, the Pays de la Meije Nordic Area is a magic spot surrounded by majestic and wild beauty. In this haven of peace the groves of trees give shelter to many wild animals. The site is at the gates of the Ecrins National Park, in a beautiful corner of the Hautes Alpes region. You will evolve in an unspoilt environment that encourages contemplation, under the watchful eye of chamois, deer and snow hares. The area is ideal for nordic sking and snowshoeing. The trails are relatively flat, going through the woods and the valley bottom, except for the ones that cross the Arsine hamlet. Cross-country skiing: 10 km of trails, three loops with with diverse but fairly easy profiles. Nordic Walking: Villar d'Arène - La Gravière (8 km) Snowshoeing: Tour of the hamlets of Villar d'Arène (11 km) Sledging: one hill at Arsine and one at the Jouvencelles, opposite Villar d'Arène Natural ice skating rink: free access, ice skate rental posssible at the gîte le Pas de l'Ane. Ski hockey: hockey equipment (bring your skis) at your disposal at the Nordic Chalet every weekend and Wednesday outside school holidays and all mornings during the french school holidays. Relaxation area: deck chairs and a spyglass enables you to enjoy the sun and observe the wildlife from a terrace next to the Nordic Chalet. The sun skimming the peaks at the heart of the winter, the site has good snow conditions throughout the winter season. Reminder: walkers and hikers with snowshoes,please follow the dedicated trails. Evariste Chancel refuge (2508 m) has 39 beds and is located on a terrace overlooking the valley of the Romanche river and La Grave village, where you will enjoy a magnificent viewpoint over the valley of the Haute Romanche. During summer the refuge is accessible from the cable car station along Lake Puy Vachier (1h). For the more energetic, there is also a trail from La Grave (3h) Easy trails. *To do in summer, starting from the refuge: Mountaineering: The Râteau , the Pic de la Grave Hiking: Col des Ruillans, Brêche Pacave Fishing in Lake Puy Vachier In winter, the refuge is accessible only on skis (skiing, snowboarding, telemark ...). The snow is not groomed, trails are not marked, and that's precisely what attracts true mountain lovers. The mountain hut is located in the heart of an alpine area particularly conducive for hiking during Summer as well as Winter. We will welcome you around a good table and we will offer you cozy accommodation in small dorms or bedrooms. The guardians will advise you on suitable itineraries, depending on weather conditions and your interests. You will also find a Finnish sauna, a perfect way to relax after exercice !

Véronique and Jérôme FOUVET were beekeepers for nearly 15 years. Since 2021, they have concentrated exclusively on making honey-based products. We also collect the propalis from the hives to make an alcoholate and a mosturizing cream. In addition, Veronique has now started making soap from olive oil enhanced with honey, propolis and beeswax. We really enjoy converting what the hive offers us into our own produce." The ascent route is 4 hours starting from Arsine and has 1150m height difference Climbing up to Lac du Pavé is first and foremost a magnificent hike, then a close-up view of the high mountains. Set in the heart of a majestic cirque, the new refuge du Pavé is part of a breathtaking scenery.... High mountains in their purest form. Recently renovated, and manned for the first time this summer, the new Pavé refuge will welcome mountaineers, climbers, experienced hikers and all nature lovers. You'll discover a refuge whose design was dictated by the surrounding environment, combining comfort and sobriety. Pauline, the janitor, will do her utmost to ensure that you have a great time in the mountains! Conviviality and good humor are the order of the day! The refuge offers quick access to a wide range of mountaineering and climbing routes, from the easiest to the most challenging. The most popular summit is the Pic nord des Cavales: one of the most beautiful easy mountaineering routes in the Ecrins massif, on excellent granite. Pointe Emma, which has the same characteristics, is also covered by numerous rope parties. These two summits offer numerous routes of varying difficulty, and both offer remarkable views over the Etançons valley and the south face of the Meije. Pointe des Chamois, next to Pointe Emma, is perfect for a quick introductory run. Fans of the great races of the wild Oisans will turn to the Pic Gaspard and its south-southeast ridge: the famous Devies-Gervasuti. Vertical enthusiasts should head for the foot of the south face of Le Pavé. Here you'll find three routes, including one of the most difficult climbs in the massif, with a 7b pitch at 3500 m! Long-distance climbers will enjoy the beautiful and demanding Pavé - Meije orientale traverse. A must in this sector. For snow climbers, the Col du Pavé is the ideal out-and-back route. From the col, you can also reach the Promontoire refuge or vice versa (serious route: steep, crevassed glacial terrain). Finally, don't forget the Grande Ruine and the famous Col du Diable. Due to global warming, this great couloir is no longer widely used, and you have to look for good snow conditions very early in the season.

The church was built around the 11th century. It is the oldest monument in the area and has been a listed building since 1959. With the Pentitents Chapel it forms a beautiful architectural complex at the heart of the village of La Grave. The church built in the roman lombard style is placed under the protection of Our Lady of the Assumption. It is surrounded by a graveyard with beautiful wooden crosses that are typical of La Grave: the triangle represents the Holy Trinity and the circle represents the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The cemetery is a temporary resting place. When the grave is removed, the heart-shaped brass plate that you see on each cross is placed on a wood panel on the wall of the church.

Listed as an historic monument, Notre Dame de l'Assomption church towers over La Grave. In First Romanesque style, this remarkable building is thought to date from the 11th century, making it the oldest building in the town. All around the church is a cemetery with graves marked by wooden crosses and decorated with brass hearts, facing the giants of ice.

On the south-facing slope of La Grave, terraced farmland and villages are inseparable. This is a European-wide landscape uniting many architectural, archaeological and natural elements. This mountain farming system was shaped mainly by past and present agricultural activity. The steep terrain at the time required terracing for it to be farmed. These former planted terraces are today natural meadowland, which is mowed or used for grazing. It is highly sensitive to this new pastoral usage, and is little by little showing signs of soil erosion.

Although it stands beside an ordinary road, the Chazelet oratory is famous for one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Alps and the Meije mountains. Built in dry stone, the edifice is at 1 834 m and overlooks the valley and the Ecrins and Meije mountains. It has been sketched, photographed and painted many times, including in the famous Meije by the Japanese painter Foujita. Recently a new orientation table was placed a few metres above the oratory. In two parts, it shows the northern slope of the Meije and the southern slope in the direction of Chazelet and Savoie.

To test your head for heights, there is nothing like this new, life-size game played facing the Meije a steel walkway suspended over empty space. The first few steps are daunting, but reaching the end of the walkway – or rather, empty space – calls for even more courage! Beneath your feet, all the way down below is the village of Les Fréaux, nestling against the Romanche, and above you, the giants of ice. If you add in the element of air, with gusts of wind blowing all around you, then strong sensations are guaranteed!

Pies, raviolis and crozet pasta are some of the main culinary specialities in Villar d'Arène, but above all it is the famous Pô Buli (“boiled bread”) that has made the village’s reputation. Once a year, in November, the village inhabitants make this bread using an ancestral recipe. For over 500 years, it has been kneaded with rye flour and boiling water, and then baked in the communal oven in the centre of the village, near the Penitents’ chapel.

Ces petits édifices en bois de mélèze d’un style très homogène sont répartis dans tout le village. Ils étaient destinés à recueillir des coffres dans lesquels étaient entreposés ce que les paysans avaient de plus précieux. Ainsi, en cas d’incendie dans une maison, les biens des occupants étaient à l’abri. Les portes qui protègent les biens précieux contenus dans les greniers sont extrêmement solides et soignées ; elles sont entièrement cloutées et fermées par une grosse serrure et un « fareuille ». Prenez le temps, au retour de randonnée, de parcourir le village et essayez de dénicher ces 12 greniers !

The Chapel Notre-Dame de Bon Repos stands on a promontory along the path connecting the Chazelet village to Les Fréaux. Its date of construction is uncertain, but it probably dates back to the eighteenth century. It is a place of worship and memory. Passable in Summer only because the trail is steep.

Perched on a large, partly immersed pebble, the dipper sways to and fro with its tail aloft, and then dives down head first into the swirling water. This surprising passerine is unusual in moving underwater against the current in search of food. Thanks to a thin membrane protecting its eyes from the water, it can spot its prey (worms, small shellfish, water insect larva), before lifting its head out of the water and letting the current carry it gently along. It then takes up a new surveillance position and starts the process all over again.

The Gravelotte campsite is at the foot of the Meije (3982 m) located, just near La Grave village and has 50 wide quality places, plus the swimming pool. It has all the facilities you will need. The accessible refuge du Goléon awaits you summer and winter alike, in an exceptional setting between lake and Meije. The wardens warmly welcome you to spend the night or grab a bite to eat in this little refuge of character. The hut keepers, Myrtille and Lucile, welcome you, with a big smile, to the hut located near Goléon Lake, facing La Meije. Nestled in the Goléon valley, near the lake (200 meters) and facing La Meije, the Goléon hut welcomes you in an exceptional setting. Made of stone and wood, this building, built in 2009 by its owner will seduce you with its rustic beauty. In summer the place is ideal to spend a night with family or friends in a warm and authentic mountain hut. In winter, the valley lends itself perfectly to ski touring. Don't hesitate to stay several nights to explore the hidden corners of this beautiful valley. Drinks and lunch à la carte, half-board or dinner, breakfast only (booking in advance is required). They cook as much as possible with local, seasonal and organic products. Fishing (in authorized period) : in the lake of Goléon is possible. The lake is stocked with brook & brown trouts by the fishing federation. The lake is classified 1st category. Fishing will be open from the 3rd Saturday of June to the 2nd Sunday of October. Evariste Chancel refuge (2508 m) has 39 beds and is located on a terrace overlooking the valley of the Romanche river and La Grave village, where you will enjoy a magnificent viewpoint over the valley of the Haute Romanche. During summer the refuge is accessible from the cable car station along Lake Puy Vachier (1h). For the more energetic, there is also a trail from La Grave (3h) Easy trails. *To do in summer, starting from the refuge: Mountaineering: The Râteau , the Pic de la Grave Hiking: Col des Ruillans, Brêche Pacave Fishing in Lake Puy Vachier In winter, the refuge is accessible only on skis (skiing, snowboarding, telemark ...). At the heart of a mountain cirque, between Le Pavé, Roche Méane and Pic Gaspard, on the shores of a glacial lake, this small mountain refuge offers a trip having an Himalayan air in one of the most secret and wild valleys from the massif des Ecrins. The ascent route is 4 hours starting from Arsine and has 1150m height difference Climbing up to Lac du Pavé is first and foremost a magnificent hike, then a close-up view of the high mountains. Set in the heart of a majestic cirque, the new refuge du Pavé is part of a breathtaking scenery.... High mountains in their purest form. Recently renovated, and manned for the first time this summer, the new Pavé refuge will welcome mountaineers, climbers, experienced hikers and all nature lovers. You'll discover a refuge whose design was dictated by the surrounding environment, combining comfort and sobriety. Pauline, the janitor, will do her utmost to ensure that you have a great time in the mountains! Conviviality and good humor are the order of the day! The refuge offers quick access to a wide range of mountaineering and climbing routes, from the easiest to the most challenging. The most popular summit is the Pic nord des Cavales: one of the most beautiful easy mountaineering routes in the Ecrins massif, on excellent granite. Pointe Emma, which has the same characteristics, is also covered by numerous rope parties. These two summits offer numerous routes of varying difficulty, and both offer remarkable views over the Etançons valley and the south face of the Meije. Pointe des Chamois, next to Pointe Emma, is perfect for a quick introductory run. Fans of the great races of the wild Oisans will turn to the Pic Gaspard and its south-southeast ridge: the famous Devies-Gervasuti. Vertical enthusiasts should head for the foot of the south face of Le Pavé. Here you'll find three routes, including one of the most difficult climbs in the massif, with a 7b pitch at 3500 m! Long-distance climbers will enjoy the beautiful and demanding Pavé - Meije orientale traverse. A must in this sector. For snow climbers, the Col du Pavé is the ideal out-and-back route. From the col, you can also reach the Promontoire refuge or vice versa (serious route: steep, crevassed glacial terrain). Finally, don't forget the Grande Ruine and the famous Col du Diable. Due to global warming, this great couloir is no longer widely used, and you have to look for good snow conditions very early in the season.

Overlooked by the Aiguilles d'Arves, the Aiguille de l'Epaisseur and the Aiguille d'Argentière, the refuge is set amidst high-altitude meadows at 2260m. In winter, access is difficult and subject to avalanche risk. Go accompanied by a guide.

The Alpe refuge is situated at the intersection of two heavily frequented valleys making it a key stage for discovering this sector of the Massif des Ecrins. The GR 54 links it, by the Arsine mountain pass, to the valley of the Guisane. From here it is possible to reach the Pavé and the Adèle Planchard refuges... Above the refuge, the high mountains begin. The ice cap of the Agneaux, by the North West slope, and the crossing by the Neige Cordier peak to go back down to the Blanc glacier are two classic snow climbs.

Located in the heart of the alpine pastures, the Alpe refuge welcomes young and old alike, for a day hike, a first night in a refuge, a stopover on the GR54 or on the way to another refuge. For mountaineering and ski touring: it's THE spot par excellence! With a superb view of the summit of Les Agneaux, access is by a very easy family hike; despite a few steep sections, it takes you back to the source of the Romanche and allows you to enjoy a very pleasant break on the banks of this pretty torrent. "A small stream, a few boulders, grassy slopes and the whole space to run and laugh at life. Not far away, the chickens peck at grass and insects, and a few yards away, from his pen, the pack donkey observes the scene with his gentle eyes, here it's a bit of Paradise", the janitors tell us. Children can run, climb, roll in the grass... Freedom is theirs! It's also the starting point for mountain hikes to various summits (Agneaux, Neige Cordier, Chamoissière, la Pyramide...).
