Description

The Signal de La Grave towers a thousand meters above the Romanche valley.
Its summit offers a panoramic view of the entire canton. It also offers exceptional views of the northern slopes of the Meije.

The summit also offers a view of the Goléon peak and the Martignare valley, which opens the door to Savoie. The climb from La Grave is steep and south-facing, so it's best to start early in the morning.

Loop details :
From the "plate-forme" at Ventelon, go up the hamlet and take the good track that leads to "Les Clots" (1916 m), past the fountain and 100 m further on, turn right onto the path that climbs up. At the next fork in the road, turn right towards Celle des Juges, then 200 m further on, leave the path which continues up the steep Cote Belle slope; follow the path, in places poorly marked, which leads to a small collet (2252 m) on the Signal ridge, and follow it to the right to the summit (2446 m) (cairn).

Descend by the same route as before, but when you reach the collet, continue along the "côte rouge" ridge: reach the top of the Chazelet lifts and descend to the left towards Les Clots. Then follow the same route back down to Ventelon.

Comment ne pas parler de cette figure emblématique des fleurs de montagne ? Elle s’appelle aussi « Pied de Lion » du fait de la forme de ses fleurs. Et l’on parle bien de fleurs au pluriel car ce que l’on prend pour une seule fleur est en fait un assemblage de feuilles laineuses (les bractées) entourant un groupe de fleurs jaunâtres : c’est donc une Astéracée (anciennement appelée Composée)… comme la marguerite ou la pâquerette.

Flore: De la légende aux pratiques...

Aussi nommées « étoiles des Glaciers », les Edelweiss seraient nées de l’étoile qui guida les rois mages. En effet, cet astre, voyant qu’il avait rempli sa mission, décida de se poser sur les cimes en une multitude de petites étoiles ! Plus prosaïquement, l’Edelweiss est un antioxydant, un anti-inflammatoire, un anti-diarrhéique et, mélangée avec du miel, elle aide à lutter contre les affections respiratoires.

Flore: Ophrys bourdon

De la grande famille des Orchidacées, l’Ophrys bourdon est l’un des champions du déguisement et de la tromperie ! Avec son labelle (le pétale le plus grand, situé au bas de la fleur) semblable à un insecte, il trompe les bourdons, en allant jusqu’à dégager un parfum qui ressemble à celui de la femelle. Les insectes croient reconnaître leur moitié et se dépêchent d’aller lutiner un petit coup, croyant ainsi assurer leur propre descendance ! Mais ce faisant, ils permettent celle de la plante en emportant sur leur tête les pollinies, amas de grains de pollen qui, avec le même manège sur une autre plante, assurent la fertilisation !

Franciscan Monastery of Saorge and Notre-Dame des Miracles church

From the esplanade of the Monastery where you can contemplate Saorge "village in the sky" hanging in ampitheatre from the restanques, enter a world of serenity: the baroque Franciscan convent, with the church and its terraced garden in a green valley.Guided tour not to be missed! Included in the monument entrance fee, no reservation required: Every day from early June to late September, at 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. From October 1 to November 3 and from February 1 to May 31 (closed Mondays): guided tour at 11am and 3pm. The village of Saorge overlooks the Roya Gorge at the gateway to the Mercantour Park. Listed as a National Monument, the Monastery, a former Franciscan convent founded in 1633 in the Baroque style, has preserved its original structure, painted decor and food garden. The Church of Our Lady of Miracles features remarkable walnut woodwork, paintings and liturgical objects. The cloister is adorned with 17th-century frescoes illustrating episodes in the life of St. Francis of Assisi, as well as an exceptional set of nine period sundials. The refectory features 17th-century frescoes depicting monastic virtues. The garden, a haven of peace overlooking the mountains, features an organic vegetable garden and orchard, terraced with several interconnected irrigation basins. Free guided tours lasting around 1 hour are included in the entrance fee. The monastery welcomes writers, translators and scriptwriters in residence from April to October. - For the visually impaired, the Monastery offers a range of mediation tools: a tactile model and well-designed tour guides in Braille and thermoformed sheets, produced by a specialized association in collaboration with the Valentin Haüy association. - For the mentally impaired, adapted tours are available in-house, subject to prior booking. - For the deaf and hard-of-hearing, the Monastery can call on the services of LSF interpreters, externally, by reservation and for groups only. - To date, there are no specific accessibility facilities for the motor-impaired...
