How could we ignore this most iconic of all mountain flowers? It is also known as "lion's paw" due to the shape of its flowers. And we really mean flowers, because what we assume to be a single flower is in fact an assembly of furry leaves - bracts - surrounding a group of yellowish flowers: so it is a member of the Asteraceae family (which used to be called Compositae) like marguerites and daisies.
