The Roman trail leaves from the center of the village of Lombers. The known history of this town lies between 1165 and 1633. Its origin dates back to the Celtic or Gallo-Roman era. There was a fortified castle at the height of the peak, allowing enemies to be seen approaching. At the northern base of the Pic, coming from Albi, the Roman road was divided into two parts, one meandering towards the castle, the other allowing access to the town via the PAPAGAY gate. Along the edges of the clay path dotted with orchids, clusters of broom, juniper, and a few holm oaks evoke a Mediterranean atmosphere. Occasionally, just a few steps away, a small limestone plateau with fragrant meadows basks in the sun…   Sturdy Roads The network of Roman roads in Gaul, begun under Agrippa and continued through the 1950s under Claudius, was the subject of constant maintenance and periodic restoration efforts. Military mobility, as well as economic development, relied on them just as much as on waterways and maritime routes. Road documents dating from the 3rd century provide a theoretical account of their condition. Today, well-preserved and traditionally known sections of these routes, bridges that still stand, engraved milestones, and other features make it possible to map out the bulk of what was once an extraordinary road network. These Roman roads continue to spark interest. The hiker is well aware of this, following in the footsteps of travelers whose earliest predecessors span two thousand years of history (and stories). Not only does it spark the imagination, but it also speaks to road engineering: a meter-thick layer of pebbles, stones, and compacted earth beneath a curved pavement designed to drain rainwater.

Turn left towards Souque and Vivier. Walk for about 150 meters, then turn right onto a grassy path towards Vivier. Reach a road and turn right for about 80 meters. -> To the right, off the trail, there is an option to visit Lake Miquelou (a 2.5 km round trip). Turn left at Capelette, then left again at a road intersection. At the first crossroads, continue straight towards Saint-Paules and Les Escudiés. At the second crossroads, descend straight on a gravel path. Ascend straight on the path you took earlier. Continue straight to a road intersection. Turn right. Pass Pradarié, then turn right onto a grassy path. Pass beside an orchard, then immediately turn left. Walk along the edge of fields and descend through a woodland. At the bottom of the wood, on a path, turn left. At a crossroads under poplars, turn right. Follow along the right side of Lake Nabeillou and return to the starting point by crossing the dam.

A 44-kilometer stretch of an old railroad track connecting the cities of Albi and Castres has been converted into a greenway (a 3-meter-wide sand-surfaced path). Developed by the Tarn Department, this project makes use of the right-of-way of the former railroad line built in 1869 between Rodez and Castelnaudary to transport passengers and coal from the mines of the Carmaux basin. The choice of materials and the care taken in maintaining the hedgerows are intended to preserve the natural character and rural atmosphere of this area. This trail, a shorter variant of the complete Colombes trail (14.6 km), takes you through the typical landscape of the Tarn Valley: fields, vineyards, and woods. You will enjoy numerous viewpoints over the surrounding villages and, on clear days, even the Pyrenees. The return route passes by the 19th-century Château de Labastidié (19th century). Facing away from the town hall, pass to the left in front of a beautiful 18th-century brick facade, then go down the small paved road on the right until you reach the D23, which you take to the left for about 50 meters. Then take the path on the left that goes up towards the vineyards (view of the old mill and the village), turn right to descend towards the Saudronne stream. Follow the stream to the left until you reach the road, then go up the road to the left. At the top of the hill, take the dirt road on the right towards Robert's farm (viewpoint). Continue on the small paved road and then turn right until you reach the road from Florentin to Aussac (calvary), which you cross to head right towards the Borio Grando farm. After the Borio Grando farm, take the small loop path to the left, which is shared with the Fourmageouge trail. Leave the right route of the Sentier des Colombes (large loop). Walk 50 meters, turn right, then left and right to reach La Grèze. Continue to the right between the fields on the path and then through the woods to rejoin the main route below Fourmageouge. At the intersection of the main route, turn left. Plunge 800 years into the past and discover medieval Occitania in the 13th century. The Castelroc site, perched atop a rocky spur, overlooks the wild Dadou valley (23km from Albi).

The Old Alby house is the soul of the Episcopal City, one of the major symbols of Albi’s historic centre. The ‘Albi Heritage’ Association keeps the history of this iconic site alive. A MEDIEVAL HOUSE This brick and timber framed house has retained the characteristics of an old medieval house in the historic centre: half-timbered and corbelled to gain more surface area plus an open-air attic called ‘the soleilhou’ (pronounced "the solayoo"...). The house is situated in the heart of intertwining narrow streets, with the backdrop of the omnipresent cathedral. The ground floor is reminiscent of old stalls and a staircase leads to the upper floors, where there is a permanent exhibition on the youth of the Albi painter, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The Berbie Palace houses the collections of this world-famous painter. The second floor is a video room dedicated to temporary exhibitions. ALBI HERITAGE HISTORY INFORMATION POINT Throughout the year, various events take place to the delight of visitors from around the world. Conferences, guided tours, exhibitions… The ‘Albi Heritage’ Association has a history Information Point open to the public. The site has retained is charm despite major renovation works in 1971. This district from the 12th century owes its survival to work by ‘The Association for the Safeguarding of Old Alby’ which saved it from demolition.

The Albi painter Raphaël CORDOBA dedicated 25 years of his life to pay tribute to the greatest painters in history from the 14th to the 20th centuries. 65 paintings are exhibited in the round tower of the Hotel de Saunal, a former Renaissance merchant’s mansion located close to the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral and the cloister of the Saint Salvi Collegiate Church. A MUSEUM FOR ALL : A HUMANIST APPROACH “A Museum for All” : that was Raphaël Cordoba's aim, who wanted to share his passion and respect for the greatest artists with as many people as possible. He is driven by the desire to interest visitors in art. His personal experience led him to capture the attention of children and teenagers and to reveal their artistic talent. Integrated into the Episcopal City listed as a World Heritage Site (UNESCO), these two buildings harmoniously combine different architectural styles. The cloister garden is a real haven of peace in the heart of the old town. Free. This Cloister, built in 1270, is a small haven of peace offering an invitation to tranquillity and observation... the doors we can see under the arcades led directly to the canons’ cells, which are now apartments. The remaining cloister wing and the Romanesque arches are linked to the Gothic capitals which are carved withcharacters, animals or vegetation. In the centre of the cloister, a simple garden is arranged where aromatic and medicinal herbs are cultivated. It is one of the five vegetable gardens created by the City of Albi where vegetables, condiments and herbs are made available to passers-by: a pooled plant and edible heritage.
