Mont Valerien : the memorial of fighting France The Mont-Valérien memorial was the main place of execution by the German army on French territory during World War II. These men, murdered because they were resistance fighters condemned to death or hostages, Jews and Communists, are all reminders of our history which naturally made this site a Mecca of national memory. After the war, the site was chosen by General de Gaulle to honor the memory of the Dead for France from 1939 to 1945; he inaugurated the memorial of fighting France there on June 18, 1960. Inside the site, the “Remembrance Trail” allows you to follow the path of those who were about to be shot: from the chapel, the walls of which still keep traces of graffiti engraved by convicts, in the clearing of the executed. The forest of the Domain of Malmaison : an encounter with fauna and flora ! The 200 hectares of this forest were acquired by Josephine in 1800 and linked up to the Château de Malmaison, extending the domain by a thousand hectares up to the woods of La-Celle-Saint-Cloud. The Empress was particularly fond of this place to walk and often led her guests there for carriage rides. Near the lake of Saint-Cucufa she set up a barn and a stable. After Josephine’s death, the estate was dismantled and partially cleared of trees. It was her grand-son, Napoleon III who saved the forest from fragmentation thanks to exchanges of land. He bought it back in 1856 and included it in his civil list. In 1870 and 1871 the forest of Malmaison was the site of fierce artillery assaults led by Captain de Nisme. In 1871, the forest became a national forest, thus becoming the property of the State. Today it plays host to Sunday strollers, experienced cyclists, jogging enthusiasts or simply nature lovers. The lake of Saint-Cucufa is a wonderful place to relax and, for the very observant, watch fishs, amphibians and ducks frolicking in the heart of a rich and diversified flora.

This park is home to the house of Father Joseph, "eminence grise" of Cardinal Richelieu. This is one of the only remains of the Richelieu area. Bought and restored by the city, this building now houses the cultural center of the Hermitage, a place for temporary exhibitions. The park and Château of Bois-Preau : an invitation for a stroll ! The very distinguished host of the park, the statue of Empress Josephine, invites visitors upon their arrival, to relax in a true English garden of 17 hectares. The park of Bois-Preau is home to many rare plant species and ancient trees such as the Byzantium hazel tree, the common Hornbeam, the Corsican pine and the giant sequoia. It is the perfect place for family walks and an ideal setting for events, shows and concerts. The château of Bois-Preau evokes the memory of the Emperor in Saint Helena and the return of his ashes to Paris. It was the last acquisition of Empress Josephine. She lodged her doctor there and stored her countless collectible objects there too. After the death of Josephine in 1814, several owners succeeded her one after another. The Americans Mr and Mrs Tuck, great benefactors of the city, purchased it in 1920 and offered it as a gift in 1926 to the National Museums to create an annex to Château de Malmaison.

Church of Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul : Josephine’s final resting place Placed under the protection of Saint Pierre and Saint Paul, the church, a listed building, houses the tombs of Empress Josephine and her daughter, Queen Hortense who expressed the desire to be buried beside her mother. Josephine’s tomb, made of Carrara marble, was completed in 1825 and is decorated with a statue by Cartellier. The statue represents the Empress kneeling, recalling, as desired by her children, David’s famous painting “The Coronation of Napoleon”. One can also admire the beautiful church organ case offered by Napoleon III and signed Bacchio d’Agniolo and the beautiful bas-relief of the altar in gilded bronze designed in the 12th century by François Anguier for the Church of Val de Grace in Paris.

In Marmontel avenue, the Empress Josephine built the Love Temple to decorate the park of Malmaison. This temple is a work of the architect Berthault executed in 1807 over a chaos of rocks at the edgeof the river of Malmaison. Six doric columns support an entablature surmounted by a crown adorned with a flower framed by ribbons pediment. A statue of love ready to launch his arrow was placed in the temple. This statue due to Jean Pierre Antoine Tassaert (1727-1788) is now in Malmaison Museum. Two vases of flowers decorated the entrance and rhododendrons adorning the banks, so as we can see in the famous painting of Josephine surrounded by ladies by Hector Viger.

This monument had originally been erected in Paris at the Champs de Mars. In 1912, Empress Eugènie decided to buy a plot of land int the park of Malmaison and to rebuild the monument there. The war of 1914 delayed the works. Finally, in 1924, prince Napoleon donated the monument and the land to the State. Jean Bourguignon, the curator of the Château de Malmaison at the time, suggested placing a bronze replica of the famous statue of Carpeaux representing the Prince Imperial and his dog Nero at the centre of the monument, and the beautiful prayer which the young prince had written and was found in his devotional book was also engraved on a plaque. The monument deteriorated quickly and in 1937, a new construction was undertaken un the same style, the eight Corinthian culumns being replaced with four columns of rose coloured marble from the Court of Auditors which was burned down under the Commune.

The imperial home of a famous couple ! Built between 1800 and 1802 by architects Percier and Fontaine from an old 17th century house, the Château de Malmaison, acquired in 1799 by Josephine Bonaparte who was looking for a land around Paris, is a unique example for its Consular style furniture. The Château de Malmaison was occupied under the Consulate by the imperial couple. From 1800 to 1802, with the Tuileries in Paris, it was thus the seat of the French government. It was the scene of many working meetings, official and private receptions, concerts, balls, lunches and field games. Josephine had her famous rose-garden planted on the estate and she also had a Temple of Love built nearby. After her divorce in 1809, Josephine continued to live in this house, so steeped in her personality. On the first floor you can still see the room where she died on 29 May 1814.

It now houses the city’s Museum of Local History and retraces the history and evolution of a small village in the Paris region from Charles Le Chauve to the present day. The rich history of Rueil-Malmaison is to be discovered in this museum installed in the building of the old town hall. Organized by theme, each room brings together objects evoking the past and the influence of the town. You can also admire exceptional works such as the Egyptian mummy of the Ptolemaic era, or the monumental painting by Maurice Orange, Bonaparte in Egypt contemplating the mummy of a King. "Musée de France", the establishment takes part in national events such as the Night of Museums or the European Heritage Days, and holds several temporary exhibitions each year. The museum offers numerous educational workshops accessible free of charge to schoolchildren to discover the collections, the history of Rueil-Malmaison and the conservation professions. The Pont du Garigliano is a bridge across the Seine in Paris. Location and constructionThe Pont du Garigliano links Boulevard Martial-Valin in the quartier de Javel (15th arrondissement), to Boulevard Exelmans in the Auteuil quartier (16th arrondissement). It is a metal bridge made of three spans (of 58m, 93m and 58m) soldered to six beams and carried on only two piles, close to the river banks. It spans roadways on both banks before reaching the ground. It is the highest bridge in Paris, at 11 metres above the level of the Seine (making it a popular place for suicides, such as that of Boris Fraenkel). It is very close to the studios of France Télévision, and to the Hôpital Européen Georges-Pompidou. HistoryFrom 1863 to 1962, the two-level stone viaduc d'Auteuil (or viaduc du Point-du-Jour) ran across the river at this point, carrying Petite Ceinture trains on its upper level and car traffic on its lower level. When car transport increased on the Boulevards des Maréchaux, and since the arches of the existing structure were too low to be passed under by river traffic, it was decided to replace it. Construction began in 1963 under the architect Davy and the engineer Thenault, and the new structure was inaugurated on 1 September 1966. The present structure is named after General Juin's victory at the Battle of Garigliano in Italy in 1944.Since the end of 2006, the art-work Le Téléphone has been installed on its downstream side, implanted in the exterior face of the pavement. It consists of a telephone cabin sculpted in the form of a flower by the architect Frank Gehry, with no function other than to receive calls from Sophie Calle, the artist who created the idea, in order to accompany the inauguration of the service on Tramway des Maréchaux, whose terminus is very close.
