Les Halles or covered marketplace in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne were originally build in 1440 and were rebuilt in 1670 after a fire destroyed them. The structure measures 80m by 20m and a market is still held there every Saturday morning. After being destroyed by fire in 1670 Les Halles were rebuilt to the original design thanks to the diligence of the then mayor of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, Philibert Collet and the generosity of the Countess of Châtillon, Melle de Montpensier who was known as the ‘Grande Demoiselle’. The countess was a cousin of King Louis XIV and through her good offices the king allowed the people of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne to take all the timber necessary for the reconstruction work from the surrounding forests.

During the middle ages, the Dukes of Savoy turned Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne into a fortified town to protect their borders. They constructed 3 gates as part of these works of which only the Port de Villars remains today. The job of fortifying the town of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne was started by Philippe I Duke of Savoy in 1273 and was completed in 1321 by Duke Ame V. The Porte de Villars or Villars Gate was built using a brick called ‘carrons savoyarde’ and you can still see the arrow slits and machicolation that were used in days gone by to defend the town. In 1709 the Porte de Villars was transformed into a residence and in 1926 it was declared a national monument.

Open all year round and located on 8 hectares just outside of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne the Arboretum is a preserved wooded area ideal for a stroll or a family picnic. The Arboretum is home to 242 different species of tree which house nesting boxes during the summer that attract many different types of birds including owls. There is also a small lake containing several varieties of fish. Such biodiversity in addition to the picnic tables and benches make the Arboretum perfect for a family day out.

Etang Prêle is a small nature reserve designed to welcome the public, with an observatory and a walking trail to discover the inhabitants of the pond. A family outing not to be missed. Etang Prêle is located in the commune of Chaneins et Valeins, between Dombes and Val-de-Saône. Covering an area of 12.7 ha, the site is owned by the Communauté de Communes de Dombes, which also manages it in conjunction with the communes concerned. This is a traditionally-managed Dombes pond. An observatory offers a glimpse of the pond's biodiversity, including great crested grebes, black-headed gulls, grey herons and egrets. An interpretation trail leads around the pond. More than 30 bird species are regularly observed on the site, including Little Egret, White Stork, Great Crested Grebe... Other amphibian species on the site include the Palmed Newt. In terms of flora, the vegetation is varied and mainly composed of rushes, phragmites and reedbeds. Several species of particular interest are present, including the Common Buttercup and the Brown Nutsedge. More generally, the Etang de Prêle represents a fish farming management issue which, like the other ponds in the Domb region, helps to maintain suitable sites for migratory stopovers and breeding of waterfowl. Etang Prêle is the perfect place for a family walk along its banks. Please note that to limit disturbance to birds, particularly in a nesting area, it is not possible to walk around the entire pond. An observatory is also available for discreet observation of the ballet of water birds. The pond is also an ideal spot for a picnic stop: tables and parking areas have been provided.
