The Pont du Garigliano is a bridge across the Seine in Paris. Location and constructionThe Pont du Garigliano links Boulevard Martial-Valin in the quartier de Javel (15th arrondissement), to Boulevard Exelmans in the Auteuil quartier (16th arrondissement). It is a metal bridge made of three spans (of 58m, 93m and 58m) soldered to six beams and carried on only two piles, close to the river banks. It spans roadways on both banks before reaching the ground. It is the highest bridge in Paris, at 11 metres above the level of the Seine (making it a popular place for suicides, such as that of Boris Fraenkel). It is very close to the studios of France Télévision, and to the Hôpital Européen Georges-Pompidou. HistoryFrom 1863 to 1962, the two-level stone viaduc d'Auteuil (or viaduc du Point-du-Jour) ran across the river at this point, carrying Petite Ceinture trains on its upper level and car traffic on its lower level. When car transport increased on the Boulevards des Maréchaux, and since the arches of the existing structure were too low to be passed under by river traffic, it was decided to replace it. Construction began in 1963 under the architect Davy and the engineer Thenault, and the new structure was inaugurated on 1 September 1966. The present structure is named after General Juin's victory at the Battle of Garigliano in Italy in 1944.Since the end of 2006, the art-work Le Téléphone has been installed on its downstream side, implanted in the exterior face of the pavement. It consists of a telephone cabin sculpted in the form of a flower by the architect Frank Gehry, with no function other than to receive calls from Sophie Calle, the artist who created the idea, in order to accompany the inauguration of the service on Tramway des Maréchaux, whose terminus is very close. The sculpture, commanded Antoine Injalbert, was limited to piles. The program is traditional: side left bank, two feminine allegories embody the Business and the Abundance whereas, on the other side, two faces symbolize the one, the City of Paris and the other one, the Navigation. The dynamism of faces, the movement of which with regard to the river is reversed of a bank in the other, contrasting with the rigorous prescription of the bridge. The effect produces two nymphs go back up the river whereas two others lower it.

The Freedom of the bridge of Grenelle is a reduction of the statue set up in New York. Given by the American colony of Paris to the City, she was originally intended for the decoration of the place of the United States. The monumental bronze joined the bridge of Grenelle for the World Fair of 1889. It was separated from the bridge, the summit of one of the piles of which it occupied, at the time of the reconstruction of the work in the 1960s and installed then on a base isolated at the forefront of the path of swans. Originally turned to the upstream and the center of Paris, the statue is turned to the mouth today.

With more than 25,000 objects, a million photographs, a library and a unique technical documentary collection, the French Museum of Photography brings together one of the most important collections internationally. In 1960, two passionate amateurs, Jean and André Fage, opened an associative museum in Bièvres. For more than thirty years they brought together images and objects testifying to the history of photography. The Departmental Council of Essonne welcomes you to a departmental museum approved "Museum of France" since 2003. The French Museum of Photography offers a temporary exhibitions program that allows to rotate the museum three funds: images, devices and documentation. With an exceptional collection of nearly a million images, 25,000 materials, more than 50,000 printed documents (books, manuals, catalogs, magazines, posters, etc.), from 1839 to the present day, the French Museum Photography aims to tell the story and history of photography! How were pictures taken in 1850, during the First World War or at the end of the 20th century? How were images disseminated at a time when we did not know yet how to reproduce them in books and newspapers? How did chemistry make them appear in the darkness of the laboratory, long before computers, printers and digital networks are invented? Why did we move from a complex craft to a flourishing industry and a universal practice? What is the use of billions of photos produced, reproduced, classified, preserved and sometimes forgotten or discarded? Begin to answer these questions, and many others, by discovering surprising images, mysterious objects, amusing commercials... thanks to the museum, we try to understand our "civilization of the image", to form our critical eye, to discover the little stories that make up the great History of the image.

The bridge, built after 1900, pulls its originality of the meeting in the same work of a road road and an air traffic intended for the passage of the subway. In the center of the railroad viaduct, the écoinçons of the arc of masonry is occupied by the faces of the Science and the Work and those of the Electricity and the Business. Mont Valerien : the memorial of fighting France The Mont-Valérien memorial was the main place of execution by the German army on French territory during World War II. These men, murdered because they were resistance fighters condemned to death or hostages, Jews and Communists, are all reminders of our history which naturally made this site a Mecca of national memory. After the war, the site was chosen by General de Gaulle to honor the memory of the Dead for France from 1939 to 1945; he inaugurated the memorial of fighting France there on June 18, 1960. Inside the site, the “Remembrance Trail” allows you to follow the path of those who were about to be shot: from the chapel, the walls of which still keep traces of graffiti engraved by convicts, in the clearing of the executed. The discovery of the Mont-Valérien memorial allows us to better understand what the German repression was, the French collaboration, and what was the journey of those "who loved life to death.

This site was classified on 07/07/2000 along the river Bièvre, which has its source in Guyancourt and flows into the Seine in Paris.
