Approved in September 2021, the GR® of Pays Scorff-Blavet-Océan offers hikers a route of 477 kilometers organized into 5 hiking loops covering the territory of West Morbihan between the bay of Lorient and the Pays de Pontivy. The loop no. 5 "Le littoral lorientais" is a 65.5-kilometre walking route that can be covered in 3 days and is therefore perfect for an extended weekend, taking advantage of a Friday or a Monday holiday, for example. Accessible by train from its starting point, Lorient, this loop offers, like its previous colleague, a roaming that smells of the sea air. Focusing on the western outskirts of Lorient before heading inland, we particularly like to take a look at the island of Groix and its famous and stunning convex beach from the tip of Talud, less than 6 kilometers from the coast. At the end of the 19th century, in the port of Le Couregant, whose slipway was built in 1894, very large quantities of fish and tons of salt were landed. This part of the Ploemeur coastline is also of strong ecological interest, explaining the existence of two protected natural areas, one at the Pointe du Talud towards Kerroc'h and the other near the Courégant. Existing heathlands are classified in the inventory of heathlands in France. The presence of several regionally interesting species has been recorded, such as Asphodelus macrocarpus, the marsh Gentian, the green-winged orchid, clumps of tor-grass, western gorse and bell heather and dorset heath. This site is an observation area for many sea birds (gannets, shearwaters, penguins, terns) and wading birds keeping to the creeks including the purple sandpiper which is quite rare. The diversity of shapes of the cliffs, creeks, beaches, dunes, moors and lawns, makes this coastline a very beautiful maritime landscape in the Pays de Lorient.

Designed by the architect Roland Schweitzer, former student of Auguste Perret (reconstruction of Le Havre) and pioneers of the renewal of wooden architecture in France. This contemporary architecture is driven by an impulse of creativity that translates into a great wealth in the production of forms, diversity of styles, use of materials. The design of the hostel and the choice of materials, wood and concrete, are directly related to the immediate environment. A staircase with terraces on 3 levels, allows to marry the slopes of the ground. Natural light, dimmed by the surrounding trees, enters the building through numerous openings.

Crossing Ploemeur, Lorient and Larmor-Plage, the river Ter, consisting of 25 kilometers of water and 35 km2 of watershed, flows into the sea in the harbor of Lorient.  Its estuary, under marine influence, once housed in its brackish waters trout, mules, plaice, bass and wild oysters. It now feeds the two ponds of Saint-Mathurin and Kermélo.  The first, was constituted in 1756 during the construction of the dike of the Moulin Neuf which takes its name from a chapel. It was built near the bridge crossing the Ter, it was destroyed by the Germans during the construction of the railway line. The Kermélo pond was formed in 1967 when a dyke bridge was built.

A housing estate from the 1960s, this district was built on a post-reconstruction garden-city design.  Noticeable for its modern village layout, which includes apartment buildings, facilities and shops in the centre. The houses are built on several templates designed by a group of Lorient architects. It is a rare example of economic suburban housing: construction techniques, layout and location in the street, repetition, aligned and offset, terraced houses.

Recently renovated, the district of Kervénanec highlights the Venzu Park, a beautiful garden of 4 hectares that refers to the ancient stream of Venzu which means black stone that descended from Keryado to the banks of the Ter. Venzu Park represents a variety of new vegetation: oaks, willows, maples from Japan and also ferns. A 25 m footbridge located in the heart of this greenery, it offers a view of the entire park.  You will find a small discreet fountain under the embankments and restored by a collective of inhabitants.

This four-hectare garden was created in 2009. Its valley, created by the exploitation of an old granite quarry, hosts a collection of sculptural plants, grasses and ferns... ferns that are repeated on the railing of the passageway across the valley. A “dry river” evokes the Le Venzu stream which ran from the Keryado district to the shores of the Ter. Oak, chestnut and ancient pines, as well as a fountain fully restored by a group of inhabitants, have been preserved in the garden.

Deconstruction, renovation, reconstruction... Over a decade, the Kervénanec district has seen considerable urban renewal with the construction of individual houses and small apartment buildings to replace the towers from the 70s.

Located three kilometers from the town of Lorient, at the junction of waterways from the Ter and the Blavet, the peninsula of Keroman remains until the years 1930 a place for walking. The Lorientais enjoy the woods and the beautiful planted alley that leads to the castle of Keroman (at the level of the current area of careening of the fishing port). From 1860, Mr. Charles installed with success of oyster parks in the waters of the Ter while M. Bois creates a bathing establishment in the cove of Keroman. To the success of the beach is added that of the regattas organized from 1873. The beach disappears with the creation of a fishing port in 1927. While the peninsula of Keroman is preparing to welcome the extension of the latter, the entry into war upends its destiny. The requisition order of the pointe de Keroman is signed on December 18, 1940 by the German occupier. This site will house the main submarine base on the Atlantic coast. A delay of 13 days is given to the owners to evacuate the premises. 

From June 21, 1940, Lorient is occupied by the Germans. The Nazi flag flies on the castle of Keroman a week later. Military port equipped with an arsenal where warships are built, the city offers a strategic outlet on the Atlantic to organize a blockade against England. Admiral Doenitz decides to establish two submarine fleets there and on July 7 a first U-Boot makes a stopover in Lorient. In a few months, the peninsula thus became an immense submarine garage where intense activity took place to build bunkers and repair U-boats. From his HQ established at Kernével in Larmor-Plage, Doenitz leads the Battle of the Atlantic and sends the U-boats in packs to attack English and then American convoys. At the end of 1942, Allied bombings intensified on the base. In December, Churchill’s war cabinet decided to destroy Lorient. Between mid-January and mid-February 1943, the city center is devastated by Allied aviation. The population is evacuated in early February.

In 1995, the Ministry of Defence announced, as part of its restructuring plan, the abandonment of the Lorient submarine base. This decision became effective in February 1997 with the departure for Toulon of the Mermaid, the last submersible present at Keroman. Lorient Agglomération then becomes the owner of the site and undertakes its reconversion. To do this, an international competition is launched in 1999. Among the 192 projects submitted, that of the Luxembourg team Paczowki-Frisch, which proposes arrangements highlighting the link between man and the sea, is finally the winner. The reconversion was organized around a three-dimensional site. Tourist and heritage, on one hand with in point d'orgue the construction of the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly inaugurated in 2008. Economic, on the other hand with the reception of a hundred companies in the nautical field. Port and sporting, finally, with the presence of many skippers and more than a dozen international teams.
