This short walk crosses wooded areas with palombières (the huts in the trees from where the palombe hunters shoot). Be careful, respect the instructions of the hunters, or avoid going there from the 1st of October till the 15th of November.

This walk crosses plum orchards and woods on the little accentuated hillsides, that dominate the valley of the river Dropt and the bastide of Villeréal.

Starting in one of the most remarkable bastides in the valley of the river Dropt, which has kept its market hall and its square with arcades, this track climbs up the ‘Pech de Parisot’ (hill of Parisot) before continuing along the river. Land'Art, a nature exhibition: the association Campagn'Art aims to promote the idea of nature in contemporary art. Deriving from the Land'Art movement, it gives artists the opportunity to express their vision of the landscape, in whatever art form ; nature is becoming their workshop. The sculpture, resulting from this process, is not an autonomous object but is part of nature around the sculpture.

Also called the ‘Bastide du Cheval’ (the bastide of the horses), the old village Villeréal, famous for its heritage dating from the Middle Ages, has a national stud farm and a training school for horse trades.

In a landscape of mixed farming combining fattened duck breeding from the South-West, plum and hazelnut orchards, cereal fields and meadows where horses and Blondes d'Aquitaine graze, you will drive from Villeréal to the villages. Between gourmet stops in the farms or curious stops at the bird observatory of the Brayssou lake, you will discover Romanesque churches, castles, pigeon lofts but also an unusual heritage: stacked houses and brassieres houses.

1 km from the royal bastide of Villeréal, on the small hill of Parisot (“Petit Paris”), you can find the Saint Clair Church, with a Romanesque dome, whose bell tower was remodeled in the imperial style in the 19th century. Some wall decorations were restored during restoration work carried out in 2009.

The Villeréal media library offers free loans of books, magazines and CDs, and has a very extensive collection dedicated to Roger Bissière (a renowned contemporary painter born in Villeréal at the end of the 19th century) and his son Louttre B, also painter. With a spacious room equipped with tables, it also hosts school groups, exhibitions and reading events. Home delivery of books on Thursdays ( under conditions). This media library is on a single level, but you will find a wide selection of documents and two freely accessible computer stations.

Listed as a historical monument, this church was built at the same time as the bastide (1265). The large dimensions, the two square turrets, connected by a crenellated walkway, and its buttresses make it a real fortress. The church had two destinations: a place of worship and an ultimate refuge. It was surrounded by a deep ditch and to get in you had to cross a drawbridge. The left tower contains a spiral staircase lit by loopholes and the right one had, at the top, a small prison. The Stations of the Cross are painted in terracotta. The statue of the Virgin, located above the entrance porch, was carved out of a tree trunk.

North of Agenais on the Périgord border, Count Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint Louis, established the bastide of Villeréal in Montlabour forest in 1265. The town was built in just 4 years. Like all new towns in the South-west in the Middle ages, it has a grid pattern. The central main square particularly stands out, with a hall of large proportions with a cob floor, which is very rare, and its fortified church set back from the centre devoted to trade. Villeréal “city of the King” of France which stood against the English from Aquitaine, still has its frame and medieval building: Half-timbered, corbelled houses, old-style enclosed gardens. The village is very lively and has many events, regular markets as well as exhibitions, flea markets, festival, bodega, horse races etc.

In the gentle valley of the Dropt, Villeréal is a royal bastide founded in the 13th century by Alphonse de Poitiers, Count of Toulouse, brother and feudal lord of King Louis IX (known as Saint-Louis). On the central square, the highlight of the visit is without a doubt the imposing 16th century hall classified as a Historic Monument, a square of 30 metres on each side, built of oak beams, some of which exceed 15 metres! After having admired the remarkable framework, learn that the first floor of the Villeréal market hall houses a large central hall, formerly the common house, seat of the jury that managed the town, now the work space of a local radio station, Radio 4.

When we talk about the gastronomic heritage of the South-West, we often refer to many specialities, but very rarely to the tourtière. A tourtière is a sugary pastry made from baked apples flavoured with plum brandy and rum, covered with petals of dough that have been hand-stretched very thinly. Sophie, a native of the region, observed her husband's great-grandmother making tourtières, and soon asked her to share her knowledge so that this culinary tradition could be perpetuated. And the result is quite a success! Her tourtières are generous, fragrant and perfectly crispy... a real delight for the eyes and the taste buds. On your marks, get set, enjoy!

Just 1 km north of Villeréal, discover the Saint-Pierre church in Rives This former chapel of a Benedictine priory depended on the Abbey of Aurillac. Used as a fortress, this priory was demolished along with the church during the first Wars of Religion. The chapel of the priory became a parish church. Only the large apse and the apsidiole on the right, dating from the 12th century, remain. The church has three naves and ends with a bell tower-wall with triangular gable. Only two large capitals remain from the old nave: one decorated with interlacing has been set in above the church door and the other, placed in the church, shows two monks in robes and cloaks in two corded arcades. On the outside, some fragments of sculptures from a building dating back perhaps to the early Middle Ages were used in this construction.

Château de Born, a 12th century estate located near Villeréal, produces and processes Pruneaux d'Agen. All the products are made from the pulp of semi-cooked prunes. Come and discover a wide range of specialties: prune cream, chutneys, semi-cooked prunes, brandy ...
