Eglise Notre Dame - Villeréal

In the north of Lot-et-Garonne, Villeréal is a lowland bastide founded in the Dropt valley in the 13th century. In the centre of the town, just a stone’s throw from the central market hall, the Church of Notre-Dame is an exceptional monument, both for the date of its construction – at the same time as the bastide, traditionally a secular settlement – and for its architecture, in the Gothic style with buttresses.
In the Middle Ages, this veritable fortress served two purposes: as a place of worship and as a last refuge. Admire its imposing portal, surmounted by a bell wall with two turrets linked by a crenellated parapet walk. Then step inside this listed Historic Monument, which features a flat chevet with buttresses at the corners, as well as some beautiful carved wooden statues of saints.
