North of Agenais on the Périgord border, Count Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint Louis, established the bastide of Villeréal in Montlabour forest in 1265. The town was built in just 4 years. Like all new towns in the South-west in the Middle ages, it has a grid pattern. The central main square particularly stands out, with a hall of large proportions with a cob floor, which is very rare, and its fortified church set back from the centre devoted to trade.
Villeréal “city of the King” of France which stood against the English from Aquitaine, still has its frame and medieval building: Half-timbered, corbelled houses, old-style enclosed gardens. The village is very lively and has many events, regular markets as well as exhibitions, flea markets, festival, bodega, horse races etc.
