The grounds are freely accessible, and church keys can be obtained from the town hall during opening hours. Further uphill stand the medieval towers of the Barony, four 14th-century towers overlooking the valley and forming the remains of the former estate of the Bishops of Avranches. The old tithe barn still survives within the courtyard. The walk concludes beautifully at the Ravin des Fontaines, a protected Sensitive Natural Area. This beech- and oak-covered valley is shaped by an intermittent stream and lined with remarkable pollarded hornbeams along the descent. This route invites walkers to immerse themselves in the Montfort State Forest, a vast 2,000-hectare woodland stretching across the slopes on the left bank of the Risle Valley. Highly undulating and largely covered with coniferous trees, this forest managed by the French National Forestry Office (ONF) offers a shaded and refreshing setting. Four visitor areas, including Rond de Beuvron, provide convenient access to the many walking and horse-riding trails listed on the map published by the Pont-Audemer Val de Risle Community of Municipalities in partnership with the ONF (available from the tourist office). Before entering the forest, the route passes through Montfort-sur-Risle and its medieval ruins. The moats and lower courtyard of the 11th-century castle, carefully cleared by volunteers from the Montfort Culture Patrimoine association, can be visited freely and offer a glimpse of the former power of this fortified site overlooking the valley. Montfort is also a stop on the pilgrimage route linking Rouen to Mont-Saint-Michel, known as the Saint Michael’s Way. Deep forest, medieval history and the spirituality of ancient pilgrimage routes come together here in an unexpected combination. A rich and refreshing forest escape.

On the outer wall of the nave, a discreet pre-Romanesque doorway bears silent witness to a much older past. The route then leads to the Saracen Fountain, a former washhouse hidden at the bottom of a secluded valley carved by the Saracens Ravine, an intermittent stream that only comes to life after heavy rainfall. This preserved site is a fine example of traditional Norman bocage, where ancient lime trees, beeches and oaks stand alongside a remarkable collection of pollarded hornbeams, creating a peaceful and timeless atmosphere. Forest forms the backbone of the route, covering nearly 40% of the trail. In the Bois des Marettes, a beautiful woodland combines oaks and maritime pines beneath a generous canopy. Sections of bocage, open farmland and panoramic views over the Risle Valley and the Saracens Ravine provide a rich variety of landscapes that change beautifully with the seasons. The final surprise is the Château de la Thillaye, an elegant Louis XIII residence. Its striking façade of red-and-black patterned brickwork, flanked by two corner turrets, creates an unexpected architectural gem in the heart of the Norman countryside. In Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre, in the heart of a bucolic Normandy, explore this medieval church. Saint Georges Church comprises a bell tower with a hip roof, a 19th century nave and a rectangular choir dating from the end of the 13th century that goes with a 12th century tower on the northern side, traces it has kept from its medieval past. During the restoration works of the paving of the choir, a well was discovered in the north-east side of the church. Abbot Corbet decided to use different tiles to show the location of this well. Stained-glass windows depict Saint Georges' life. Quirky detail: on the outside walls, you can see nails that were hammered by believers to ask or thank for healing, as well as feet, boat and glasses graffiti.

The permanent exhibition "Sur les Pas des Maquisards" (Follow the footsteps of the Maquisards) is divided into several themes that explain, among other things, daily life under the German Occupation, the Maquis' operations, the Liberation, the martyrs of the Resistance Movement, the Maquis Surcouf Memorial and other places of remembrance. The Maquis Surcouf Resistance Movement was founded in the Lieuvin area in 1942 and developed thanks to the extraordinary network of holloways and isolated farms in this area. Thanks to their actions, the men belonging to the Maquis made the area dangerous and hostile for the German troops.

Designed in 1993 by Gérard and Philippe, the Jardin de la Vallée (Valley Garden) is home to more than 1,000 plant species spread over different flower beds, all designed around tall trees and shrubs. Throughout the seasons, visitors fall under the spell of the blossoming magnolias (25 varieties), camellias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas (80 varieties), roses (140 varieties), etc.

In the Roumois region, a number of remarkable trees can be admired, such as "La Belle Epine", a common white hawthorn in Bouquetot, or the Chêne à la Vierge in Monts du Roumois. But the two must-sees are undoubtedly the two thousand-year-old Yew trees at La Haye-de-Routot, located in the Notre-Dame churchyard. These are around 1,500 years old, having been dug out naturally over time. One became a chapel dedicated to Sainte-Anne, while the other was transformed into an oratory dedicated to Notre-Dame de Lourdes. Both trees were classified as "Site inscrit" in 1932, and were awarded the "Arbre remarquable de France" label in 2001.

You're between Le Bec Hellouin, one of France's most beautiful villages, and Pont-Audemer, full of charm with its timber-framed canal-side houses. The gîte is a house built over a basement, so it's laid out on the first floor: entrance with checkroom cupboard, functional, well-equipped kitchen, bright living room opening onto a balcony overlooking the garden and valley: dining area off the kitchen, and comfortable lounge. Two nicely decorated bedrooms, each with its own closet or small dressing room: the yellow and gray one with a 140x190 double bed, and the duck blue one with two 90x190 single beds. Just above the Risle valley and its bucolic landscapes, in the middle of fields and orchards in a very Norman landscape, La Pomme is a really nice vacation home.
