27. Oak of the Virgin Trail – Starting point: Rondemare Hamlet in Appeville-dit-Annebault or Val Dallet Recreation Area

This route takes its name from a remarkable tree: the Oak of the Virgin, one of the eleven notable trees of the Montfort State Forest highlighted by the French National Forestry Office. Located just 100 metres from the Val Dallet recreation area, it is well worth the detour and perfectly reflects Normandy’s deep attachment to its ancient and protective trees.

The walk begins on the plateau near the picturesque hamlet of Rondemare, about two kilometres from Appeville. Its half-timbered houses, nestled on the edge of a valley and at the gateway to the Montfort Forest, create a scene of rare rural authenticity.

The Château de Brumare, an elegant 18th-century residence visible from the trail, adds a touch of refinement to the route. Its private park contains numerous remarkable trees, including magnificent mature beeches whose grandeur rivals those of the neighbouring forest.

The Montfort State Forest dominates the second half of the walk, surrounding visitors with its 2,000 hectares of rolling woodland. Frequent views over the bocage countryside and the Risle Valley provide welcome openings in the forest and highlight the richness of the surrounding landscape.
