33. “Les Cateliers” Discovery Trail – Starting point: Les Cateliers picnic area, Montfort State Forest

Nestled within the 2,000 hectares of the Montfort State Forest, the Les Cateliers Discovery Trail is far more than a simple woodland walk. This protected Sensitive Natural Area combines nature, art and learning, creating a unique outdoor experience for visitors of all ages.

Along the trail, thirteen sculptures created by La Brigade Verte, led by Jérémy and Rudy, transform the forest into an open-air gallery. Crafted from materials inspired by the woodland itself, these works blend seamlessly into their surroundings, turning each bend in the path into an unexpected artistic encounter.

Sixteen educational panels guide walkers through the identification of the many tree species found in the forest. Familiar species such as beech, sessile oak, Scots pine, spruce and chestnut stand alongside more unusual varieties, including silver birch, wild service tree, Japanese larch and Lawson cypress. It is an ideal introduction to forest biodiversity for both children and adults.

The forest itself, characterised by its rolling terrain and extensive conifer plantations, offers constantly changing atmospheres shaped by the variety of tree species and the play of light through the canopy. Four visitor areas, including Les Cateliers and Rond de Beuvron, provide convenient access to the site.
