Lagarde is an ancient walled village founded at the beginning of the XIVth century by the overlord of Mirepoix. For more than half a millenium, the primitive fortified castle underwent numerous transformations. With the severity of a medieval fortress, the charm of a renaissance castle and the magnificence of a XVIIth century palace, the home of the Mirepoix Lévis reflects in its imposing ruins the evolution of high quality achitecture through the ages. Lagarde and its castle remained at the very heart of Mirepoix's seigniory up until the Revolution.

This is surely one of the longest data you can discover the various villages and historic castles that this route has. With remarkable views of the plain and Lake Montbel, let yourself be carried along these trails.

Leaving the greenway next to the Super U store, you will join a path along the woods and a stream in a loop that will take you to the ruins of Quié, a former hamlet demolished.

This loop from Mirepoix will take you quietly to the village of Besset. A family ride from Mirepoix to Besset on a beautiful hilly course.

This easy and pleasant path, in the form of a loop, marked white and red then yellow, will lead you near the Croix de Terride which marks the crossroads of several paths including one would be an old Roman road.

This family walk takes the shady paths of the slopes of Mirepoix. From the Croix of Terride the view extends from the bastide to the massif of Tabe and to Bastonis where is a breeding of deer. You can see these magnificent animals closely with a little discretion and a lot of luck.

After parking in the parking lot of the town hall of St-Julien, walk on a path between two hills before starting the climb leading you to the Pic d'Estelle, from where you will have a magnificent view of the Pyrenees.

Path from Peyrat which leads to the hamlet of Mireval or "mira-valh" which means in Occitan "look at the valley". Until the mid-nineteenth century, Le Peyrat was an industrial center specialized in the manufacture of horn comb and leather goods.

The statue of the sainte vierge de l'oratoire has a special story behind it : it was, found on the plains between Camon and Lagarde. It was taken to Lagarde on an oxcart. Since it's been classified as an historical monument, the inhabitants of Lagarde are very attached to it.

The church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was said to be on the Plaine de Magdelaine. It is recorded from 943, but no archives make any mantion of it from the XVIth century. As of today it has disappeared completely.

This ancient demolished hamlet today only corresponds to a locality: no one has lived there for at least 60 years. This culminating point of the town was inhabited by farmers and it is said that in the war of 14-18, the farmer, returned on leave to Quié, found his wife in bed with the employee, he would have killed on the field, before deserting.

Cimbing the steps leading to the top of the observatory affords you a magnificient view over the Tabe massif and the lake.

This massif (aka massif of St. Barthelmie) has always been to the peoples who lived under its shadow, a spiritual importance of first order: many megalithic remains, sun worship from the most likely ancient, pagan cults attested by the historical writing. The name "Tabe" is the French language of Occitan "Tava / Tabo". A broad consensus is that name from the name of "Mount Tabor", in Palestine, which took place the Biblical episode of the Transfiguration of Christ.

With a surface area of 2 hectares and a depth of around 3 m, fishing is permitted. Children's play equipment is also available. And since 3 August 2023, there has been a Velorail on this tourist site. In 2026, a second circuit (2x7.5 km) with a Quizz game will open, heading towards Castelnaudary. An Accrobranche park is just 3 km from Lac de Lenclas. Please note, however, that swimming is prohibited.
