Exciting discoveries in Saint-martin-de-valgalgues

Immerse yourself in the lower Cévennes, between sweet-chestnut groves and maquis scrubland, as you explore the Galeizon valley and the plains of Languedoc. From the car park, go downhill on the road. A few metres after the first bend, turn left and go downhill on a path to reach the road to Peyraube. At the reservoir, go downhill on the road and take the track on the left before entering Peyraube. Continue on this track and pass in front of Les Pièces. Before Les Combes, at the sign for Le Flaquier, take the path on the left towards Les Cabassettes. Go uphill into the chestnut grove, walk in front of Le Flaquier to the second ruin and continue on the path to join up with a track. Turn left onto this track to reach the D 632 road. Turn left onto the road and continue to its crossroads with the D 32. Turn right onto the D 32 for 400 m, then take the path on the left to climb to the Col des Cabassettes pass. At the pass, take the path on the left that leads you through the Roc Troué (notched rock), past the dolmen of the same name and to the D 32. Take the lane towards Peyraube to return to the car park.

Immerse yourself in a history as you walk from the banks of the river Gardon to Mas Soubeyran, a museum of French Protestantism. You will be able to enjoy far-reaching views onto the Puechs, Mont Aigoual, Mont Liron and, on clear days, even the Alps. From the car park, turn right onto the D 50, cross the Pont des Camisards bridge and turn left towards Le Travès / Paussan. Then head for Mas Soubeyran via La Roquette. At Mas Soubeyran, take the path on the right to reach La Baumelle gully, which leads to the mas (farm) of the same name. Walk past the mas on its right and continue on the track to join up with the road. Turn right onto the road and after 250 m turn left on a path towards La Rouvière. At La Rouvière, turn left onto a fire road (DFCI) and take a path on the left that goes downhill into Roquefeuille gully. Cross the bridge, take the road on the left and then a small path on the right that will lead you back to Mialet.

A walk “by stone and wood”, through time, past ancient vestiges and ancestral know-how. Go uphill on the road and past Meyrannes school. At the bridge over Montagnac gully, continue straight ahead, then fork right. A path starts between the houses at the top of the village. A steep path leads you quickly to Montgrillet, which it enters through an olive grove. Go past the disused quarry above a large lime-kiln. Your footpath climbs on the right to a  dry-stone hut. Continue going uphill to Montgrillet on the same path between two walls, which cuts through an oak grove. Turn left towards La Font-de-Bourboul on a path that is paved to begin with. Retrace your steps, walk alongside the Bourboul brook and then climb the wooden steps. Go uphill and turn right onto your original outbound path.

The walk takes you to the centre of the old village using the former Royal road, which was once the only track from Chamborigaud to Saint German-de-Calberte. This walk has eleven numbered information panels.

This trail gives you access to panoramic viewpoints on its mountain ridges, as you follow in the footsteps of the men and women who left their imprint on the schist. A few clarifications:• As you leave the car park, turn right and continue on the road for 150 metres, then go left towards Mas de la Tourette / La Borie.• After Marker 4, take the path that goes uphill on the right. Be careful, some sections are slippery.• At the road, continue left to the hamlet. Then take the path on the right. • At the junction of paths, continue right. • Turn right towards the castle (there-and-back) to reach Markers 6, 7, 8.• Return to the car park on the path.   

A short walk to do with the family starting from the hamlet of Chadouillet in the town of Saint-André-de-Cruzières. P – From the Place du Planet, go to the signpost for Chadouillet. Chadouillet - Follow Les Courpatières 1,3 km ().Take the first left on the Chanisse path. Continue on the small tarmac road that becomes a track. Cross the bridge and follow the path bordered by low walls. Les Courpatières - Follow Carissoules 0,5km. Take the path on the right, then on the left to go down through the oak trees towards the Cotepatière resurgence. When you reach the river bed, follow it for a few metres on the left, then go up a path on the right. Carissoules - Follow Chadouillet 0,9km. Turn right onto the path from which you can see the bell tower of Saint-André-de-Cruzières, and return to the starting point

Quittez l’agitation de la route nationale pour plonger dans la quiétude d’un ravin rafraîchissant. Lorsque vous sortirez du labyrinthe de terrasses, laissez vous guider par une voie ferrée rendue à son évolution naturelle. Le sentier descend vers un petit cours d’eau avant de le franchir par une passerelle. La remontée se fait dans les anciennes terrasses et rejoint l’ancien chemin de fer départemental (CFD). Le parcours se poursuit sur le tracé du CFD et emprunte le viaduc. Après le dernier point d’interprétation, le sentier bifurque sur un chemin plus étroit pour redescendre vers le Pont de Champernal.

Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... Come and stroll along the béal, let yourself be lulled by the sound of water on the mill wheels! There are 3 interpretation trails in the Vallée Borgne area, including one on the route of the Maison de l'Eau des Plantiers.

Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Ideally located, we open our house for a stopover on a hike or a longer stay, a weekend with family or friends. We look forward to welcoming you. This is a scrubland of tree heaths, evergreen (mock) privets, sage-leaved rock roses and strawberry trees, between which frolic two-tailed pashas. This butterfly can be identified by its tan and brown colour, its underside which is ocellated black and white, and by the two tails it has at the bottom of its wings. It can only be found where there are strawberry trees, and for a good reason: they are the only plants that host its eggs, nourish its larvae and provide twigs for its chrysalis to hang from. The pasha likes to feed on ripe fruit as well as fermented and even alcoholic matter! It is also known as the foxy emperor. (B. Mathieu)

The repeated passage of flocks of sheep over the millennia – first wild, then domesticated – has dragged a path to this summit. Under the impetus of the monks of Cendras, humans enlarged the path by hand to make it easier to use by convoys of saddled mules and by sheep. In 1689, the King's Intendant in Languedoc, Monsieur de Basville, implemented a royal order to organise the road network in the Cevennes in such a way that canons could be pulled along it and enable troops to hunt down Protestant rebels more easily. […] The dry-stone retaining walls and especially the giant breach cut into the rock that gives it its name – Roc Troué or Notched Rock – showcase the colossal efforts of our ancestors. The track is now in such a bad state that it is hard to imagine it was ever suitable for carts! (B. Mathieu)

Complexes of dolmens were built 4,000 years ago; the ones that collapsed were re-used up to the 6th century BC to deposit the ashes of the deceased and a few last offerings [dolmens furent bâtis il y a 4 000 ans puis effondrés et re-employés DONC, on les a effondres expres avant de les re-utiliser? Un peu bizarre comme formulation/idee ? Revoir la V.O.)]. Some seem to have been more elaborate, such as this one: a round base supports a dolmen built like a small house with a rock table for a “roof”. In fact, it is not certain that, in the Cevennes, prehistoric tombs were covered in this way. Archaeological excavations have uncovered pottery shards, bronze bracelets, hewn flints, a few cremation deposits or, in some cases, nothing at all! (B. Mathieu)

(Private property) You enter the ruins via a staircase chiselled into the rock. All the buildings - sheepfold, bread oven, clède (building for drying chestnuts) – are built on the bare rock. Long ago, a spring above them was tapped and fixed for the hamlet's needs. The large water retention basin carved into the rock has since dried out. (B. Mathieu)

Alongside the paths grows a plant whose name, at least, is known to all those who remember La Fontaine's fable of the Hare and the Tortoise: “Pray take, your senses to restore / A grain or two of hellebore”. Hellebore, also known as dungwort, is toxic – but it does not cure madness as popular belief had it. This member of the buttercup family is evergreen and can be identified in winter by its pale green leaves, which are spear-shaped and palmately lobed. […] Its pale green flower stalk has bracts and dies after flowering; it appears in February to March. It is embellished with five greenish petals with a red edge and ten petals of a rather unpleasant nectary shape. Shepherds hung it in sheepfolds and used it to treat abscesses and sheep scab. Very old mills for producing oil, wool and flour border the Valat de Baumelle gully. Note the mill pond (Occitan: gorga) at the edge of the path and backing onto the mill. The inhabitants of Luziers laid out their vegetable plots on the many terraces you can still see on either side of the path. The uppermost terraces – the “dry gardens”  – were reserved for crops needing little water: broad beans, lentils, peas, etc. Other vegetables were planted on terraces that lay closer to the waterway. They were irrigated using a system of terracotta pipes connected to small basins. (Nelly Bernard)

The idea for a “Museum of the Wilderness” goes back to 1880, when the Société de l'histoire du protestantisme français launched a subscription to buy the birthplace of the Camisard leader Roland (real name: Pierre Laporte). […] In 1910, the Musée du Désert was created as a memorial site to trace the history of Protestantism from 1685 to 1789 and its fight against the French regime's intolerance. […] It is intended to bear witness to the past and promote awareness of the spiritual and cultural heritage that shaped the Cevenol mentality. Every first Sunday in September, almost 20,000 people gather in the shade of the oaks at Mas Soubeyran to hold a Protestant service – the so-called Gathering in the Wilderness. (Nelly Bernard)

Legend has it that this humpback bridge was built from 1702 to 1704 by Jean Cavalier, a leader of the Protestant Camisard uprising against the Catholic King. And a legend is all it is. It was constructed a decade later, from 1714 to 1718, when Louis XIV's Intendant, a Monsieur de Basville, decided to develop the road network in the Cevennes. The diocese of Alès was responsible for funding a large share of the construction, and the inhabitants of Mialet were forced to participate through work our paying taxes. In 1976, it became a listed monument. (Nelly Bernard)

Le Montgrillet is the hillock above the village. The population of Meyrannes used to be overwhelmingly farmers, who lived on what they grew. Le Montgrillet is exposed to the sun and close to the village, and was the ideal spot for farming. Evidence for this can be seen all along the path. The grove of olive trees above the path indicates one of the crops once grown in Meyrannes, along with grapes and mulberry trees (for leaves to feed to silkworms). (B. Mathieu)  

This structure was built using dry-stoning techniques (i.e. without binder) and was once used by the farmer to store his harvest, tidy away his tools or take shelter when a storm about to burst did not leave him enough time to return home. The builder chose to make his hut back onto a terrace, so as to economise on one wall and save space. On this sloping land, efficiency is of the essence: the farmer has to make the most of every cultivatable square metre. Terrace walls built from stones serve to create horizontal plots, remove stones from the land and prevent erosion. (B. Mathieu)

Mas Corbières is a calm, enchanting place in the heart of nature, ideal for a change of scenery, a recharge of batteries and a creative outlet.

Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Ideally located, we open our house for a stopover on a hike or a longer stay, a weekend with family or friends. We look forward to welcoming you. Our table d'hôtes is available on reservation, as are products from the chestnut grove. Guided walks available. In summer, there's a supervised lake in the village and river swimming nearby.

Our hotel and restaurant will give you a warm welcome no matter how long you stay. 15km from Pont d'Arc Valley and 8km from from the Cèze Valley on the Aven d'Orgnac site. Approval pending for the "Tourisme et Handicap" label (visual and mental disability).
