Leaving from Saint-Marcel-Bel-Accueil, this loop takes you to the heights of the village for an immersive journey through nature and history. After a straightforward climb, the walk alternates between shaded and open areas, offering magnificent views of the local heritage and the Alps, which can be appreciated all the more from the orientation table set up along the way. The last part of the walk takes you through the village and its traditional houses, whose golden hues add a touch of charm to this escapade.

In the south-west of the Balcons du Dauphiné, between hills and ponds, Panossas stands out for its beautiful red hues, a phenomenon that can be explained by the rich iron content of the limestone, which is found in the various architectural features. The village then gives way to a variety of landscapes, from undergrowth to panoramic views over the Isle-Crémieu, as you make your way along this hilly walking route.

This partly shaded loop, starting from Saint-Hilaire-de-Brens, offers magnificent panoramic views over the Lac de Moras (private). You'll also discover a wealth of architectural features along the way, including châteaux and small water-related buildings (wash-houses, fountains, wells).

Many forests to cross as well as ponds mark out the loop. Take a break to admire the landscape at the orientation tables of Rochetoirin (to the left of the church) and of the Chapelle St-Joseph (on the heights of Cessieu). As far as heritage is concerned, you will pass by the castle of Montceau and the Chapels St-Joseph and Notre-Dame de la Salette (Cessieu).

This short and shaded loop invites you to contemplate the chapels Notre-Dame de Salette and St-Joseph as well as the beautiful panorama located at the second one. ROUTE From the Champ de Mars, you will reach the church of Cessieu. Step inside to admire the murals by Dutch artist Cor van Gelenken. Just behind the church stands the round clock tower. It is said to have played a protective role in medieval times. Follow the path up into the forest. After 400m, you'll see the Notre-Dame de Salette chapel on your left. Continue uphill to the St-Joseph chapel. Freshly restored, it overlooks the Bourbre valley. From the viewpoint indicator behind the chapel, you can contemplate the Monts du Lyonnais, the Vercors and the Chartreuse. After Croix de Fer, you pass through a number of hamlets and the Cessieu woods. The profile descends to Les Guerres and climbs back up to Les Communaux. The hike ends downhill on a small road lined with hedgerows. Discover during your journey, Vallin's forest, a mystical place, with its marshes, its pond and its two streams : limestone for one and ferruginous for the other. This little walk in the forest will be relaxing and full of surprises. From the car park in the Vallin forest, look for the hiking information board showing the entire loop then follow the yellow signs and the signs below: Saint-Joseph > La Thébaïde by the pond > Etang de Vallin > La Thébaïde > Saint-Joseph > Back to the car park Take the long path leading to the ‘Saint-Joseph’ sign. Then take a smaller path on the right towards ‘La Thébaïde par la mare’. Look out for the rich flora and fauna of these small wetlands (newts, yellow-bellied carp...). The walk continues along a path leading to the Vallin pond. The forest features a variety of tree species, including beech, chestnut and lime. Return along the main path to the ‘Saint-Joseph’ signpost and then to the car park at the entrance of the Vallin forest.

This very short loop follows the banks of the Hien and then climbs to the top of the village to offer a panoramic view from the church. ROUTE From the chemin Cartailler car park, take the footbridge over the River Hien and walk along the river a few dozen metres, surrounded by meadows and tree-lined paths. Once you reach the football stadium, take the main street of St-Victor de Cessieu for 250m before taking mainly paths. After a climb, you reach the church of St-Victor. Stop at the war memorial to enjoy the view of the village in the foreground, the hills of the Bourbre valley and the Cessieu woods in the background and the Monts du Chat in the distance. Stop for your picnic at the Belmont landscaped area or at the hunters' cabin. ROUTE From Biol Le Haut car park, follow the direction of Reveret and Biol and follow the small stream to the footbridge. Join the D520, cross it carefully and then follow the D51 for 200m to reach the "La Moutonnière" post. Continue straight ahead until you reach Belmont, where you can have a picnic on an area arranged towards a (private) pond. In Belmont, head towards "Bois Bessay" then pass the posts "les Chasseurs", "le Crépon" and "Les Planches" through the Poullins woods and the king's forest. After 1.4km, in the direction of "Les 3 Coches", there is a hunters' cabin (always open, with water, except in winter). After the "Aux Bois" post, go back and forth to the orientation table. Finally, go down the small road to reach the departure car park. Its rich collection of 12th-century Romanesque frescoes are among the best-conserved examples yet they are perhaps the least known to the general public. An identical model of this exemplary church was produced by historians and exhibited around 1940 at the cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine at the Trocadero in Paris. On entering the high chapel, the visitor is stunned by the decoration of the entire room. The floor (approximately 100 m²) is covered in gold and blue mosaic and the vault is entirely ochre. In 1864, Canon Noël Crochat, a priest from Cessieu, founded the chapel of Notre-Dame de la Salette on the ruins of the old fortified house of Le Châtelard. A former dwelling remodelled as a chapel between 1860 and 1864, it houses a statue of the Virgin and Child and paintings by Dutch artist Cor Van Geleuken.

Dating from the 12th century and belonging to the Torchefelon family, this tower would have played a protective role in the Middle Ages. It is thought to be a vestige of the ‘Châtelard’, which stood on the hillside.

The history of the village of Saint-Chef is directly linked to that of its Benedictine abbey, listed as an Historical Monument in 1840 for its Romanesque church among the oldest in Dauphine and chapel of the Angels, covered with 12th century frescoes. Saint-Chef's Abbey, through its influence for twelve centuries, has deeply marked the local landscape. The story begins in the hamlet of Arcisse at the beginning of the 6th century, where the young Theudère, a native of the hamlet, decided to leave everything to join the Lérins Abbey. Ordered in Arles, he returned 'home' to establish four monasteries, including that of Val Rupéen, probably on the site of the current church. Destroyed by barbarian raids, it was rebuilt in 890 by Benedictine monks from Champagne and experienced a remarkable boom. So much that, in the 11th century, the church was enlarged and highly decorated, in the 12th century, with Romanesque frescoes, illustrating Saint John's vision of the Heavenly Jerusalem, the eternal city. The abbey then extended its patronage to a dozen priories and a hundred parishes in the area. Becoming a noble chapter in 1536, the remaining twenty-eight canons decided to leave in 1774, to join the abbey of Saint-André-le-Bas in Vienne. Abandoned, then damaged during the French Revolution, the church was rescued from the ravages of time and men thanks to Prosper Mérimée who created the first inventory of Historical Monuments in 1840. From that point, the church was cleaned up by removing the four metres of earth that had slipped on its northern and eastern flanks, and the Romanesque frescoes were protected.
