Lake Moras :
The lake and dry meadows of Moras cover 70 hectares and 3 communes: Moras, Veyssilieu and Saint Hilaire-de-Brens. The lake plays a major role in hosting waterfowl, particularly during migration and wintering.
The European cistude turtle breeds in the dry grasslands bordering the pond.
The lake is not just known for its wealth of wildlife.
There used to be a restaurant here that was very popular with the Lyon clientele. People used to come here to enjoy the natural surroundings and taste the small fry or the traditional fromage blanc.
Customers used to take the eastern train (which called at Vénérieu and Saint-Hilaire-de-Brens) in the morning, then walk through the woods to the banks of the lake at a place called "la Baignade",
where boats were waiting to take them to the restaurant. This very picturesque restaurant had to close in 1920 due to a lack of managers !
Lake Moras has also given rise to a legend: the gods swallowed up a village in retaliation for the debauchery that reigned there... A woman was even turned to stone !

The fortified house of Moras :
Construction of this fortified house, which overlooks the lake, began in 1280. At the time, it only had a quadrangular tower.
Several buildings were constructed around the fortified house, with a barn and stables in the mid XVth century.
This construction, in the form of an enclosure, enabled the villagers to take refuge there in the event of danger.
Louis XI is even said to have stayed in this fortified house in 1450 !
