Discover Bonnefond, Corrèze, Limousin: Hidden Gem

Between the Plateau de Millevaches and the Massif des Monédières, the Upper Corrèze Valley offers natural landscapes and traditional local architecture, and many hiking trails have been opened thanks to a dynamic team of volunteers working to promote the discovery of the heritage of this area.Go down the Rue du Tilleul, cross the D18 and head towards Laubary. After the cemetery, take the first road on the left. Cross the D18 again. 200 m after the crossroads take an uphill path to the right.On the flat, at the intersection, go straight ahead; the path goes back down to the road. (Outside the circuit: Take the  path on the left; the Menhir du Pilard is in the undergrowth 50 m on the right.) Keep left until you reach Anglard.In the village, turn right on a tarmac path as far as a barn. (Shorter route: Go up to the left by the road, then take the path to get back to the main road). Follow the downhill path to the left. It crosses the Corrèze and rises at a crossroads of tracks. Turn left to reach a crossroads.(Outside the circuit: Crossroads on the outskirts of La Nocaudie). The road to the left crosses the Corrèze; go up 300 m to take the path on the right.Continue straight ahead: The path passes several woods and meadows and then goes uphill alongside a sheep pen.Go back on the road and follow it straight ahead. Go through Chadebec (the pendulum well is on the left). At the edge of the hamlet, turn left on the path that goes down to the Chedebec mill. Continue to return to the road, then take it on the left to get back to Bonnefond.

This circuit is marked by the variety of elements of the historical heritage: crosses of ways, miraculous fountains, Christianized menhir of Pilard (probably installed on an ancient way at an important crossroads). The recently restored Chadebec mill bears witness to the settlement of Cistercian monks from Aubazine. There is a 6km variant.

Discover the mills and village of Razel along the Chemin du Meunier. Along the way, you'll see the Barsanges peat bog below the parking lot, the Orluguet stream, the diversion on the stream that gives rise to the millstream essential to the operation of the three mills, a plank bridge, low-walled paths and the village of Razel... "Millevaches, Pays des Mille Sources" had many mills. If the current landscape is marked by meadows and forest, cereals were once essential. The particularity of Razel is to have three mills on the same site: while the inhabitants of Razel and Chaumeil built the collective mill in the centre, two wealthier families built the other two.

This path leads to the emblematic site of Les Cars. These remains are only one of the many testimonies of the development of the area in the Gallo-Roman period. You will also pass through hamlets steeped in history: in contrast to Ars and its rich heritage (bridge, bread oven, cross, etc.), the thatched cottages of Variéras symbolise the revival and creativity of the Plateau (these buildings cannot be visited).

Exploring a must-see site on the Millevaches plateau: the Gallo-Roman remains at Les CarsThis path starts in the granite village of Pérols and leads us to one of the most iconic sites of the Millevaches Plateau: The site of Les Cars. These remains are only one of the many places offering evidence of the life of the Plateau in the Gallo-Roman period. One after another, you will pass through hamlets steeped in history: from Ars and its rural heritage (bridge, bread oven, cross...) to Variéras with its thatched cottages, symbolising the renewal and creativity of the Plateau.

Saddle up and discover the many sights around Pérols-sur-Vézère with this 20km 100km circuit. The circuit is not particularly difficult and you will be able to enjoy this beautiful cycling trip to the full. From Pérols-sur-Vézère, you head for a village of Gallic indomitability: the village of Variéras. A charming little hamlet with 70 houses, its particularity is its thatched houses, just like the villages of our ancestors. You take the road again in the direction of Saint-Merd-les-Oussines. Enjoy a short diversions to its pond with numerous water lilies. On the way back to Pérols-sur-Vézère, the site of Les Cars is less than 100 metres from your path, the most remarkable Gallo-Roman site in the Limousin dating from the 2nd century AD.

On the crest of the Péret-Bel-Air circuit, the forest, granite and peaty landscape accompany your footsteps.From the car park, take the first forest track on the left. It runs alongside many spruce plantations with prickly needles. Leave the track coming from the left and continue to the right for 400 m until you reach the Pierre-Dure valley.Climb the steep track to the left. It climbs up to the Puy de Bessergue (915 m). At the top, leave the semblance of a path on the left, and go down the main track. 50 m further down, take the left track through the coniferous trees. Continue straight ahead along the track. Turn left onto the D119Take the track on the left. It goes around the Puy de la Justice, planted with Douglas fir. Continue by the track on the right, then by the D76 on the left for 500 m.Take the forest track on the right. Continue straight ahead along the track then, facing the slope, turn right and continue into the conifer plantations.At the crossroads, continue straight ahead to see the site of the rocks of Chaveroche, 300 m to the right (gigantic granite blocks that dominate the village of Péret-Bel-Air; remain vigilant with children), then retrace your steps.Follow the track on the right, then the wide track on the left and the D76 on the left to return to the starting point.

The peat bog path and its pontoon bridge lead you to the very heart of the peat bog for a discovery full of surprises. This unique trail, currently being renewed for the Tourism & Handicap mark for hearing, motor and mental disabilities, allows everyone to discover the heart of the Col de la Blanche peat bog. Equipped with a pontoon and educational interpretation panels, the peat bog reveals its secrets, fauna and flora, a water-logged environment, the actions taken to preserve this environment.... This wetland is one of the characteristic landscapes of the Millevaches Regional Nature Park.

Sentinels of the village of Péret-Bel-Air, the rocks of Chaveroche, magnificent and gigantic chaos of granite, leave one wondering. How do they hold their balance, what giant carved their rounded forms, did they shelter and protect our ancestors? This 400-year-old lime tree stands majestically in front of the church and is also surrounded by a small stone wall where it is nice to sit and enjoy the cool shade. With a circumference of 6.40 m to 1.50 m and a height of about ten metres, its trunk is entirely hollow and can be crossed from side to side. The trunk was filled in with stones and cement to a height of one meter.

Between Millevaches and Monédières, the commune of Bonnefond lives to the rhythm of nature discovery, welcoming groups and pilgrims, hiking, cross-country skiing... Bonnefond also protects its heritage: the Chadebec mill, fountains, crosses, the Pilard menhir?

Among the many miraculous springs that were the object of procession and pilgrimage, that of Saint-Médard is known to cure stomach aches and migraines.

The Pilard menhir is a 6000-year-old standing stone. At that time, it indicated a crossroads between two paths. It was also a place of worship that evolved through the religions: pagan then Christian. A cross was sculpted on the stone probably around the 5th century AD.

Only a few magical beings still seem to inhabit Clédat... Abandoned in the 60s, the village is now accessible all year round via a forest track (accessible by car). Once a welcoming place for pilgrims and travellers, today the chapel, restored in the early 2000s, and a thatched cottage stand amidst the remains of the village. Nearby attractions include the Ste Madeleine fountain, the viewpoint of Le Rocher, the Sape de Maquisards and the Gallic Tumulus.

Located on the Millevaches plateau, the three Razel flour mills are unique in that they are all on the same site. While the inhabitants of Razel and Chaumeil built the collective mill in the center, two wealthier families built the other two. Now restored, they reveal the secrets of their mechanisms. There are several hiking trails to discover them.

At La Saulière, a remarkable 15th-16th century Maltese cross with long shaft. Obverse: cross-legged Christ. Reverse: Virgin and Child carved on the shaft, not on the cross as usual.

Situated on a steep site overlooking a meander of the Corrèze river, this stronghold was built in the late 13th or early 14th century, north-east of Saint-Yrieix-le-Déjalat by the lords of Saint-Yrieix. Its purpose was to guard the valley road between Bonnefond and Saint-Augustin, and it was defended on one side by the river and on the other by semi-circular ditches lined with palisaded ramparts. Less than a century after its construction, the stronghold was abandoned.

Built in the 12th century and modified in the 14th, the early church comprised a rectangular choir with flat chevet, a nave with two square bays and a small portal on the south façade. In the 14th century, the choir and the first bay of the nave were rib-vaulted. A small seigniorial chapel was added to the south, and a gabled bell tower was erected on the west façade.

It is located in the village of Barsanges. Very simple 12th-century portal, two-bay bell tower-wall. Inside, a remarkable Gallo-Roman vat from the Les Cars site has been reused as a baptismal font. A scene of deer and wild boar hunting can be seen around the perimeter.
