This itinerary in the Michaille is ideal for a family mountain bike outing, at the foot of the Plateau de Retord, with lovely views of the Crêt d'Eau (and even Mont-Blanc!). Wide, stony trails with no major difficulties. Take a break by the Nièvre pond or under the four-hundred-year-old Sully lime tree in the charming village of Villes. Watch out for road crossings and the occasional stretch of road.

The mountain pastures of Menthières and the landscapes of the Chalet du Sac offer wide-open spaces for an escape in the heart of the Monts Jura. Between forest and mountain pastures, this varied trail which is open from April to November, offers superb panoramic views. The trail starts from the parking lot opposite the Rendu chairlift, skirting the go ape tree park before climbing to the Col de Menthières. It passes through emblematic places that serve as landmarks for hikers: the “Grange Velue” and the “Chalet du Sac” which offer panoramic views of Valserhône, the Retord plateau and the Alps. The route takes you through the heart of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park, and part of the Haute Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve: a protected, unspoilt area to be explored with respect. Follow the Menthières snowshoe trail through snow-covered forests and clearings to an alpine chalet. Once you arrive, enjoy a superb panorama of Mont Blanc, the Alps, Lake Geneva, and the Hautes-Combes du Jura. This is a round-trip route that takes you through the wild and unspoiled landscape typical of the Haute Chaîne du Jura. Follow the marked trail through the forest and then across the mountain pastures to reach the Chalet de la Poutouille, an unmanned refuge that makes for a great stopping-point in the heart of nature. Along the way, there are many viewpoints: the Grand Crêt d'Eau dominates the landscape at the start, then gradually magnificent panoramas of Mont Blanc, the Alps, the Lake Geneva basin and nearby Geneva reveal themselves. This peaceful trail, away from the crowds, immerses you in the sweeping scenery of the Jura ridges. The route passes through the Haute Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve, a protected area where nature rules: stay on the marked trails and follow the regulations. Please note that from December 15 to June 30, the trail crosses a wildlife quiet zone. Use of the trail is only allowed on condition that you stay strictly on the marked route and do not stray from it.

This round trip on a white road is ideal for a family mountain bike outing. 10 mountain bike modules scattered between Lancrans and Confort will enhance your ride. These wooden structures of various shapes are the best representation of the obstacles that can be found in the great outdoors. The route follows the old Voie du Tram that once linked Bellegarde to Chézery. Some structures are still visible, such as the Mulaz station and the Moulin des Pierres bridge, built to accommodate the streetcar.

A fairly long and technical route, but with no major difficulties. The circuit takes in part of the Voie du Tram, passing close to the Mêlée des eaux: confluence of the Valserine and Semine rivers, then back to the right bank of the Valserine. The first part is easy, with pebbles and tarmac. Be careful after Pont des Pierres, the descent to Pont de Coz is difficult (single track with mud, steep slope, very technical section).

A very pleasant sporting route with beautiful views. The first part of the route takes in the “balcony” above the village of Lancrans, before joining the Voie du Tram and then the banks of the Valserine in the second part. Most of the route is on wide paths, with a good climb at the start and a very technical section after the Pont des Pierres. Then you return along the Valserine on a path that is very popular with hikers, so be careful.

You will have the opportunity to discover a lot of exceptionnal and beautiful must-sees while walking along the river Valserine such as the Pertes and the Pont des Pierres (a bridge made of stones). Then, keep walking until you reach the famous Voie du Tram in order to find out more about the history of the trolley. 1. Go down the path towards the Pertes de la Valserine. 2. In a bend, turn left and walk along the right bank of the Valserine, as far as the Pont de Coz. 3. Go right and go towards the Comfort bridge (possible access to the Mêlée des Eaux, confluence of the Valserine and the Semine (10 min). For the short variant of 3:30, cross the Comfort bridge and climb without leaving the wide path that leads to the tarmac road (Pelant road to Confort), then follow the Tramway towards Lancrans and find the path that leads to Losses of the valserine. 4. Do not cross the Comfort bridge. Before the bridge, return to the road, follow it uphill, then turn right in a bend, the path that leads to the Moulin des Pierres on the D14a. 5. Just before joining the road, admire the view of the Pont des Pierres from the belvedere. Take the road on the left for 50m then cross it to join the path opposite and follow it to the right parallel to the road to reach the Pont des Pierres. 6. Cross the bridge and at its exit take the Voie du Tram on the right to the old Mulaz station. 7. Continue towards Confort and cross the village. 8. After the retirement home, turn right onto Voie du Tram, it leads to an intersection near Lancrans with the GR9 / GTJ. 9. Fork to the right, then go down to find the Pertes de la Valserine, cross the Pont des Oulles. 10. By the route taken on the outward journey, reach the D1084 car park or Bellegarde town center via the GR.

This GR® de Pays visits the Retord plateau, then takes you to the highest commune in the Ain department: Giron. Then follow the crest of the Haute Chaine jurassienne, a balcony overlooking Lake Geneva, before finishing where it all began: at Valserhône. Set off on an adventure on our GR de Pays: Le Grand Tour de la Valserine. Hiking the Grand Tour de la Valserine is an adventure in the Jura, away from the crowds of the Alps and off the beaten track in unspoilt countryside. You quickly leave the city behind and gradually gain height before reaching the vast expanses of the Plateau de Retord. At Catray, you'll get a good overview of the road ahead and, if you're lucky, a magnificent panorama of the Alps and their star: Mont Blanc. If you set off in spring, daffodils and narcissi will embellish your route! Then head for the other side of the Jura mountains, passing through the highest commune in the Ain department, Giron, at an altitude of 1,000 metres. You'll pass through places steeped in history, such as La borne au Lion, where the more courageous can take a detour via the famous Crêt de Chalam! The Monts Jura resort, in the village of Lélex, will welcome you as you prepare to climb the highest peaks in the Jura: Crêt de la Neige (1720 m), Reculet (1717 m) and Crêt de la Goutte (1621)! You'll cross the Haute-Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve, a veritable balcony overlooking breathtaking scenery. You'll be overlooking Lake Geneva, and of course you'll be able to admire all the ground you've covered on this grand tour - something to make you proud! After a well-deserved break at the Menthières site, you'll return to the Valserine valley, with its wild river, to finish in style with a passage through the Pertes de la Valserine, where the river winds its way through canyons before reappearing further on. Finally, return to your starting point: Valserhône. From the heart of Bellegarde, this hike leads to the bowels of the Valserine, an affluent of the Rhône. This trail includes several walkways, allowing to either walk along or cross the river, as well as a picnic area. In less than 2 hrs - there and back -, equipped with the fold-out provided by the Tourist Office, you will discover no less than half a dozen curiosities and remnants, both natural and man-made, attesting to the town's industrial culture: A hydroelectric plant and an old biscuit factory A customs guardhouse A telemechanic pillar The tram bridge The Métral dam The Pont des Oules bridge

From the tram bridge over the Volférine to Dragon’s bridge over the Valserine, you’re eyes will never be far from witnessing paradise, in this place that combines cliffs, gorges, rivers, works of art and landscapes. Heading down the D 14, the trail comes to the Saint-Martin washhouse in CHAMPFROMIER - HELL’S BRIDGE. Take “rue Neuve” to the right (yellow waymarking) before the bridge and head around the hotel to a metal barrier that you will need to open. The trail heads down into the gorges of the Volferine and crosses the torrent at the foot of a surprising stone structure. Continue along the left embankment and then take a good path through a meadow to your left. The path descends to the left and then enters the forest. Turn left towards Domplomb. The trail, which pleasantly rises and falls through boxwood, copses and and high forests, opens out onto the D 14 near the Domplomb tunnel. The trail turns right to descend below the road with quite a surprise along the way. You will join up with the Valserine at DRAGON’S BRIDGE. Take care, the path is right on the edge of the torrent. Cross the bridge observing where the fish pass, and then ascend to the right to reach the Dragon’s House. Follow the stony path to the right which, after a bend, comes to the bridge of Sous Roche. The path crosses over the Valserine and heads up the opposite bank via a steep trail along the edge of a cliff. During high waters, sources and waterfalls gush and splatter near the trail. Return to the village the way you came, making the most of the view over the cirque of Avalanches to the west of Champfromier, where the Volferine starts.

The refuge comprises 2 distinct sections : a refuge and a gîte. The refuge part offers comfortable and simple living conditions, with welcoming bedrooms, a cosy common room and a fully-equipped kitchen for preparing meals. Open all year round, it can accommodate up to 8 people, with 6 mattresses available for hikers. Equipped with a wood -burning stove for warming up in winter, a table for eating and a shelter in case of bad weather, the refuge allows visitors to rest and spend the night in peace. Renovated in 2022, with walls and roof insulated with burnt wood planks, it also features solar panels for room lighting and USB sockets for visitors' convenience. Wood is supplied by the association to fuel the stove. The gîte section is reserved exclusively for residents of the commune of Péron. To obtain the key, you need to reserve via the Mairie de Péron website and go to the Mairie to collect it, accessible via the “Availability and reservations” tab. Upstairs, under the roof, the gîte offers 14 beds, where you can be awakened by the gentle rays of sunshine filtering through the velux windows. On the first floor, a wood -burning stove warms the space and allows you to prepare your meals, accompanied by a gas stove and a complete assortment of utensils and pots and pans. Outside, a source of non-potable water allows you to recharge at the source. This will enable you to clean your cooking utensils. It's important to remember to bring drinking water with you. The fire pit is the perfect place to enjoy wood-fired dishes and keep warm on those balmy nights at the top of the Jura mountains.

This one time coaching-inn is in business in Saint-Germain-de-Joux since 1836. Today, it's an elegant hotel and restaurant where the hospitality of the Pannier-Gavard family will afford you a wonderful stay. Located in an idyllic setting in the countryside, between Lyon and Geneva but also between the Rhône river and the Haut-Jura Natural Park, the Reygrobellet Hotel has been in trading for nearly 2 centuries. In the restaurant, chef Muriel offers a local gastronomy with fresh products from the market and regional products such as trout from Semine, Bresse chicken, frog legs, crayfish, not forgetting the traditionnal chesse plater and her delicious desserts.

The Mulaz train station was one of six stations on the Bellegarde-Chézery line and served the hamlets of la Mulaz and la Serpentouze. The Tram Line linked the villages in the Valserine valley with Bellegarde and provided opportunities to both inhabitants and companies. The line’s three engines also pulled freight wagons and opened-up the sawmills of Chézery and Champfromier, the plaster factory in Pré-Basson and the asphalt mines in Forens.

In 1927, an abandoned hydroelectric power plant project led to the excavation of a gallery in the gorges of the Valserine. As early as 1969, 17 species of bats, including 7 endangered species were listed as living in these galleries. For their protection, these galleries are now closed to the public. The natural reserve that was created as a result also protects the cliffs and other natural surface habitats recognised as remarkable areas by Europe.

Construction of the Moulin des Pierres bridge started in 1908. Huge wooden scaffolding was put up to build the 80-metre cut-stone archway, and over 100 workers were employed. Opened in 1909, at the time it was one of the biggest bridges in Europe. Large numbers of goods and people crossed the bridge every day. The duty-free zone that once followed the line of the Valserine river meant that a customs building needed to be built to monitor passage over the bridge up until 1923 when the borders were pushed back to the Jura ridges. During the Second World War, the bridge was blown up by the secret army who used dynamite to stop the Germany army from retreating. It was later rebuilt identically using concrete in 1954.

The landscape surrounding you is the result of 200 million years of erosion, shaped by the ice age, runoff waters, changes in temperature, wind, etc. The Pont des Pierres offers a viewpoint from which you can see the different ways in which the gorges have been eroded: glacial and fluvial deposits, fracture of the cliffside, glacial polish, tufa, etc. 

In a small depression, on the edge of the woods, many nettles have now grown. Nettles are nitrophilous plants (meaning they love nitrate) and they grow in the ruins of old mountain cabins, feeding several centuries later on the remnants of animal’s bedding (excerpt from the booklet: “Au fil de l’alpage” or “Through the alpine pasture”).

The sizeable roof of this chalet protrudes from the middle of this mountain pasture and is a place of shelter during times of rain or fog. Built during the first half of the 19th century, the Varambon chalet is the last remnant of the mountain pasture on the Grand Crêt D’Eau. It once housed a central kitchen in which the cheesemaker made Comté or Bleu de Gex. The two rooms located to the north served to keep milk fresh (the dairy) and to store cheese (the attic). Two stables to the south, which are now open to hikers during the day (and hold exhibits on the life of shepherds in the large stable), were home to around sixty dairy cows, young cattle and pigs, who were fattened up with whey (excerpt from the booklet: “Au fil de l’alpage” or “Through the alpine pasture”).

At the far south-east of the Jura massif is the long Jura mountain range. From the Rhône water gap to the south, to the Swiss border to the North, and overlooking the Lake Geneva basin, the high Jura mountain range separates the Pays de Gex from the valley of the Valserine. Created in 1993, the National Natural Reserve ensures the preservation of mountainous environments that could be altered by development and potentially high tourist numbers. The reserve aims to ensure a balance between farming and forest exploitation and preserving the wealth of natural heritage in this area. The diversity of vegetation groups, in various colours and environments, are part of the originality of these high mountain range landscapes.

South of the National Natural Reserve of the High Jura mountain range, this discovery trail provides an understanding of low-walls and goyas, explains the disappearance of old altitude villages, makes a pit stop at the Varambon chalet and allows hikers to visit the exhibit on the chalet (booklet available at the Bellegarde-sur-Valserine tourist office).

An easy walk along the river banks from the town centre to the place known as "Les Pertes de la Valserine", where the river disappears into a bottomless pit, before reappearing beyond a labyrinth of limestone canyons. The Valserine is the first French river to have been awarded the ‘Rivières Sauvages’ label. This guarantees its high purity. Trout spawn here and are protected in certain areas by reserves. At Valserhône, the river disappears only to reappear a little further on... These are the Pertes de la Valserine! From the car park along the D1084, take a path that descends for about 20 minutes to the Pertes de la Valserine, where the river's waters disappear into a bottomless chasm, only to reappear beyond a labyrinth of limestone canyons. The Valserine contributed to the industrial and commercial development of Bellegarde, and was also a border on several occasions: between France and Savoy (1601-1760), then a free zone (1815-1923) and a demarcation line during the Second World War (free zone located on the right bank). Other possible starting points for the walk: - from the Voie du Tram car park, at a place called Rougeland - from Bellegarde town centre, taking the detour via the Voie du Tram and then the GR9.

Discover the 360° panoramic view of the Alps and the Jura from the viewpoint indicator on the Crêt de la Goutte (1,621m/5,318ft), the highest point of the Crêt d'Eau massif.

The Col du Sac shelter is on the GR "Balcon du Léman" trail. It can also be reached from Menthières or the Charnaz parking lot. Conditions at Chalet du Sac are simple: 6 bunks with mattresses and blankets, a wood-burning stove and a communal area for eating and relaxing. It's the ideal place for hikers and nature lovers looking for a mountain getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
