The 41km Etangs des Combrailles hike is generally a 3-day walk through a wild environment dotted with ponds. This second 11.5 km stage links the communes of Montel-de-Gelat and Dontreix.

On the edge of the Creuse département, you can take a leisurely stroll through a wild environment of pastures and forests before finally discovering the pleasant 22-hectare Etang Neuf.

The vastness of this pond inspires calm and reverie. An observatory makes the area ideal for discovering the flora and fauna, particularly migratory birds. The pond is also a favourite meeting place for pike anglers.

On this trail, you can discover the flora and fauna of the Chancelade pond using educational panels designed by primary school pupils from Biollet, Espinasse and Charensat.

An educational trail runs all the way around the pond. Leaving the pond, after passing through a wood, you follow a small path lined with drystone walls, in the midst of nature once again in its wild state. All along the way, you can admire century-old oak and beech trees, as well as beautiful views over the Cher valley and Dontreix...

Leaving from Villosanges, this is a pleasant woodland walk that skirts the Verne-Labouesse lake and passes through hedgerows and forests.

A family trail to discover the Charensat forest and the Etang du Chevalet. Explanatory signs accompany walkers along the route to introduce them to the flora and fauna. Take a short break at the Etang du Chevalet and relax on a bench (with picnic table). Further on, you'll discover a source of drinking water and pass under huge white fir trees before arriving at the starting point. Another picnic area also invites you to take a rest under tall fir trees. These educational trails under the trees (white firs, Douglas firs, oaks and beeches) are great to do when the weather is warm, but also in autumn to discover the mushrooms and enjoy the colours of the forest. The trails are accessible with an all-terrain pushchair and have been designed and built by local schools to teach people about the forest. Ideal for all the family.

Situated on the border of the departments of Creuse and Puy-de-Dôme, the Etang Neuf is home to many species characteristic of wetlands: Eurasian reed warbler, water rail. The flora of the lake presents remarkable plants such as Littorella uniflora (Shoreweed) and the bay willow.

The toponym "Drouille" comes from the Gallic "dervo" meaning "oak". Unfortunately, the forest has been exploited (felling, plantations) and the ZNIEFF has thus been reduced from 740 hectares to just under 340 ha.

This pond welcomes all nature lovers, and is both a fishing and a leisure area, so there's something for everyone. * To fish, remember to buy a fishing permit (annual, monthly or daily) from your local shopkeeper or from the town hall (open from March to October). * For a leisurely stroll, there's a hiking trail around the pond, picnic areas with barbecues, and facilities for wheelchair users. A forest of druids and mistletoe oaks, the Drouille forest conceals numerous megaliths which were the scene of Celtic and later Christian rituals (the St Julien procession). It's a magical place to walk in all seasons. Hiking circuit maps available in the Town Hall and at Auzances Tourist Welcome Centre.

Saint-Julien, a Roman soldier converted to Christianity in the 4th century and martyred by the emperor Diocletian, found refuge in the Drouilles forest, before being beheaded near Brioude in the Haute-Loire. Various beliefs have sprung up around him. According to local legend, every crevice of this granite chaos conjures up images of objects. For example, the bed, seat and table of Saint-Julien can be recognized. Similarly, one of the cupules regularly filled with water is said to be the place where the paw of St. Julien?s horse landed, spurting out water. Over time, this depression became known as the Saint-Julien fountain. This spring, whose waters are said never to dry up, was the recipient of numerous coin donations for rain, fair weather or crop protection.
