Les rochers de Saint-Julien

Dontreix - Rochers de St Julien_2
Credit : Commune de Dontreix

Description

Saint-Julien, a Roman soldier converted to Christianity in the 4th century and martyred by the emperor Diocletian, found refuge in the Drouilles forest, before being beheaded near Brioude in the Haute-Loire. Various beliefs have sprung up around him.
According to local legend, every crevice of this granite chaos conjures up images of objects. For example, the bed, seat and table of Saint-Julien can be recognized. Similarly, one of the cupules regularly filled with water is said to be the place where the paw of St. Julien?s horse landed, spurting out water. Over time, this depression became known as the Saint-Julien fountain. This spring, whose waters are said never to dry up, was the recipient of numerous coin donations for rain, fair weather or crop protection.
