Leaving the pond, after passing through a wood, you follow a small path lined with drystone walls, in the midst of nature once again in its wild state. All along the way, you can admire century-old oak and beech trees, as well as beautiful views over the Cher valley and Dontreix...

A forest of druids and mistletoe oaks, the Drouille forest conceals numerous megaliths which were the scene of Celtic and later Christian rituals (the St Julien procession). It's a magical place to walk in all seasons. Hiking circuit maps available in the Town Hall and at Auzances Tourist Welcome Centre.

Saint-Julien, a Roman soldier converted to Christianity in the 4th century and martyred by the emperor Diocletian, found refuge in the Drouilles forest, before being beheaded near Brioude in the Haute-Loire. Various beliefs have sprung up around him. According to local legend, every crevice of this granite chaos conjures up images of objects. For example, the bed, seat and table of Saint-Julien can be recognized. Similarly, one of the cupules regularly filled with water is said to be the place where the paw of St. Julien?s horse landed, spurting out water. Over time, this depression became known as the Saint-Julien fountain. This spring, whose waters are said never to dry up, was the recipient of numerous coin donations for rain, fair weather or crop protection.

At the end of the 18th century, Arthur Young was already sensitive to the hedged farmland of the region: “Hills, valleys, woods, paddocks, streams, lakes and scattered farmsteads form a thousand delightful pictures.” As for the toponym “Vergne”, it can refer to river dikes made of stones and fascines (piles of branches) or, more simply, to very wet meadows.
