Conches, capital town of the Pays d'Ouche, reveals the hidden treasures of its past and leads you along the mysterious Rouloir valley, displaying its cool river banks and rural Norman architectural gems. This area leaves visitors with the memory of a graceful and feminine Normandy with a smooth landscape, which was so well depicted by Jean de la Varende.

In this ocean of green, nature remains intimate and mysterious, sometimes to be seen in the forest, sometimes in the valley. The river vanishes and comes back again into sight all along the walk. If you want to learn more, information panels scattered along the path provide details about the flora.

Ideal to learn the name of the different creatures that live in the ponds, this walk in the middle of nature is peaceful and restful and takes you, at the beginning, to explore two ponds with information panels. It is then followed by a walk across fields where it is sometimes possible to observe a covey of partridges. Once you get to the wood of Morsent, keep your camera ready and listen carefully for cracking branches or twigs: deer are watching you.

A haven of peace at the bottom of the valley, visitors enjoy Villalet for its tranquillity and its intimate landscapes. The trail follows the footsteps of carters, called "Rouliers" in French, a term that described the man and its cart pulled by horses. You might have unexpected encounters: horse riders, startled deer behind a grove, etc.

If you enjoy family hikes the Lême Trail, both peaceful and mysterious, is a good pick for you. In an intimate area characterized by a glade in the middle of the forest, a ghost river and a chapel that used to be named Notre-Dame-du-Désert are part of the wonders found along the way.

The site "Les Etangs de la Poultière" has been set up to enable visitors to explore and learn more about aquatic environments. An easily accessible and educational trail will lead you, and your family, along the rehabilitated lakes, several ponds and on the banks of a recreated river route. Numerous species of water birds have settled there, the ponds teem with life and the river widens its bed!

The river Iton, which is 132 kilometres long (82 miles) and meanders in a pleasant valley bordered by woods, plains and forests, offers in turn wide open spaces with scenic views and wild tight areas. Its subtle meanders draw the course of a trickling, dawdling, spurting, springing and shining water that used to keep the former watermills going.

Coulonges comes from the Latin "coloniae" which means a territory inhabited by Roman settlers. Indeed, the Romans used hydraulic power to turn their millstones. This is why they settled in this area, supplied by the river Iton, and built watermills. Later, at the time of medieval lords, Coulonges became part of the big Domaine d'Hellenvilliers, thus allowing the construction of churches and castles. A charming walk by the water and in the hamlets of Sacq and Sylvains-les-Moulins, which will show you the charm of their beautiful country houses and their unspoilt landscapes.

A special place, assembling a collection of objects associated with the famous French composer in the house where he was born: Claude Debussy's birthplace is located in the historic quarter of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. It was in this 17-century house in the town that Claude Debussy was born, on 22 August 1862, and spent his early childhood. His father ran a china shop on the ground floor. After the composer's death in 1918, it soon became the main gathering place of his many admirers. Once inside, you will discover a wonderful little inner courtyard, where a splendid wooden staircase will lead you up to the museum. The museum, officially recognised as a 'Maison des illustres' ('Houses of the Famous'), displays objects and photographs that help provide a better understanding of the composer's creative process. In fact, Debussy liked to surround himself with objects from different places and artistic movements, which influenced his music. For example, a Japanese lacquered panel, which came from his Parisian mansion, depicting two fish swimming under a willow, musically metamorphosed into 'Poissons d'or', a piano piece (1907). A small museum but a grand tribute to one of France's greatest composers!

The Grand Trianon was designed in 1687 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart to allow King Louis XIV to escape the excessive luxury of the Court and to safeguard his love affairs there. The site indeed exudes a sense of intimacy and refinement. The palace is inspired by Italian architecture and invites you to poetry and leisurely strolls. It was built on the site of Louis XIV’s former Porcelain Trianon. A little fun fact: in the past, the Grand Trianon was surrounded by thousands of potted flowers, which were changed every day. Today, this tradition is still maintained with each season. The spectacle was truly unique: flowerbeds bursting with blooms of every color and a wide variety of fragrances filled the air. Later on, the Grand Trianon was frequented by Napoleon Bonaparte and by Presidents of the Republic. From 1962 to 1966, General de Gaulle entrusted André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs, with the restoration of the Grand Trianon.

In the heart of the Norman countryside, the picturesque village of La Ferrière-sur-Risle conceals an unexpected exhibition hall. Restored to its former industrial style and located in an old leather factory, the Cultural Centre welcomes numerous talented artists (painters, sculptors, photographers, etc.) as part of its programme of temporary exhibitions.

La Ferrière is a lovely little village with typical streets, small washhouses and beautiful Norman houses. The market hall on the square dates back to the 14th century. It holds a market every Sunday morning. The 12th century church has an elegant bell tower. Temporary exhibitions are organised in the former renovated tanneries. The village is immersed in a peaceful and joyous atmosphere. And listen very carefully, you might hear wind instruments...

In the Pays d’Ouche, find out about the regional collective memory thanks to thousands of daily life objects and tools. Nestled in the arboretum, the large restored barn, which houses the museum, is in itself, a piece of the collection. Masses of objects and tools from Normandy are displayed. Organised into themes, they reveal how life in Normandy was in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Craftsmanship is also given pride of place with the showcase of old crafts: farrier, shoemaker, saddler, etc. A building is dedicated to apples. It is a pleasant way to discover or re-discover little-known or even lost traditions. In summer, activities and temporary exhibitions are organised for rural life lovers. The arboretum neighbouring the museum comprises an interesting conservation orchard where more than a hundred varieties of apple trees are displayed.

The arboretum in Conches-en-Ouche was planted in 1995 in a typically Norman bucolic setting. This green, slightly rolling open space comprises 120 tree species coming from Asia, Europe and America. More familiar trees from Norman gardens (oaks, cherry trees, elms, hornbeams, etc.) can also be seen in this park located around the Rouloir river. The apple tree conservation area enables visitors to identify about one hundred different species of cider or eating apple trees.

Saint Foy's Church, topped with a 52-metre high spire, was completely rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. With its sober Flamboyant Gothic architecture, the church gives an impression of harmony and grandeur with its apse overlooking the Rouloir river. Inside, have a look at the 22 16th century stained-glass windows that are 10 metres high and form one of the most remarkable examples of glass art of the Renaissance period in Normandy, as well as the various 16th and 17th century statues.

In the heart of the Norman Pays d’Ouche, grasp the art of glass making in one of the rare Glass museums in France. Blowing, casting, cutting... glass becomes art. A delight to the eyes. From works made by François Décorchemont, born in Conches and a leading figure in glass art, to those made by the Leperlier brothers, Jean-Claude Novaro, Yan Zoritchak and Jean-Pierre Umbdenstock, the museum provides an overview of contemporary glass works in France. Every year, artists' exhibitions show the vitality of this art. Good to know: Décorchemont (1880-1971) was one of the greatest contemporary glass artists; his work is very distinctive and includes the stained-glass windows of St Odile's Church in Paris and of more than thirty churches in the Eure.

Overlooking the Rouloir valley, the town of Conches-en-Ouche is surrounded by a forest that is well-known by hunters. Stroll down the streets, explore the squares, and have a look at the keep, the 15th century half-timbered houses, the former abbey with its vaulted cellars, the 16th century stained-glass windows, that are all part of the town's significant cultural heritage. Do not miss: the Glass Museum dedicated to the local glass artist, François Décorchemont, and to contemporary glass makers.

Take time to discover the history of the most important commandry in Normandy. This institution, the Knights Templar Commandry, was founded in the middle of the 12th century by Richard d'Harcourt. There are a few remaining buildings: a large barn with a splendid framework resting on two rows of columns that delineate a nave and two side aisles. Two 13th century constructions including a remarkable bakehouse comprising three bread ovens.

During the 19th century, Doctor Auzoux created what he called "les Ecorchés", anatomical models made of paper paste that would sell throughout the world and train generations of doctors. The museum displays this significant legacy - the only one of its kind in the world - and this unusual and very precise know-how: a model of a human body that requires 2,000 numbered parts! It also displays species of fauna and flora including a Tsetse fly, a bee, a fern and an algae.

In a simple setting that perfectly combines the charm of old beams, contemporary furniture and modern colours, Xavier Buzieux offers relevant seasonal dishes with surprising flavours. Known as one of the best restaurants in Evreux, food lovers are sure to spend a delicious time in a pleasant and elegant setting. By the reception, there is a little shopping corner where the chef sells a selection of local products.
