Coulonges comes from the Latin "coloniae" which means a territory inhabited by Roman settlers. Indeed, the Romans used hydraulic power to turn their millstones. This is why they settled in this area, supplied by the river Iton, and built watermills. Later, at the time of medieval lords, Coulonges became part of the big Domaine d'Hellenvilliers, thus allowing the construction of churches and castles. A charming walk by the water and in the hamlets of Sacq and Sylvains-les-Moulins, which will show you the charm of their beautiful country houses and their unspoilt landscapes.

The river Iton, which is 132 kilometres long (82 miles) and meanders in a pleasant valley bordered by woods, plains and forests, offers in turn wide open spaces with scenic views and wild tight areas. Its subtle meanders draw the course of a trickling, dawdling, spurting, springing and shining water that used to keep the former watermills going.

The splendid setting of the Domaine de Chambray (listed Historic Monument) provides a wide open space ideal for walks. A beautiful and bountiful nature has grown on the banks of the river Iton listed a "Sensitive Natural Area". This walk invites you to immerse yourself in nature and learn about the fauna and flora found in wetlands thanks to 15 information panels.

A haven of peace at the bottom of the valley, visitors enjoy Villalet for its tranquillity and its intimate landscapes. The trail follows the footsteps of carters, called "Rouliers" in French, a term that described the man and its cart pulled by horses. You might have unexpected encounters: horse riders, startled deer behind a grove, etc.

All along this walk, you will go through fertile farmland dotted with ponds and peaceful hamlets. The walking trail, which goes around the Domaine d’Hellenvilliers, allows you to admire the park and the manor house, whose origin goes back to the 9th century and where Henry IV of France stayed before the battle of Ivry.

In this ocean of green, nature remains intimate and mysterious, sometimes to be seen in the forest, sometimes in the valley. The river vanishes and comes back again into sight all along the walk. If you want to learn more, information panels scattered along the path provide details about the flora.

This trail offers a glimpse of the GR22 hiking trail that links Paris to the Mont-St-Michel and allows visitors to enjoy the joys of nature at the beginning of spring. From the bottom of the Avre valley, supplied by its tributary, the Meuvette, walkers get to the wooded hillsides - listed for the diversity of species found there - and admire the wet meadows. This watery landscape also gives pride of place to heritage sites.

Conches, capital town of the Pays d'Ouche, reveals the hidden treasures of its past and leads you along the mysterious Rouloir valley, displaying its cool river banks and rural Norman architectural gems. A special place, assembling a collection of objects associated with the famous French composer in the house where he was born: Claude Debussy's birthplace is located in the historic quarter of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. It was in this 17-century house in the town that Claude Debussy was born, on 22 August 1862, and spent his early childhood. His father ran a china shop on the ground floor. After the composer's death in 1918, it soon became the main gathering place of his many admirers. Once inside, you will discover a wonderful little inner courtyard, where a splendid wooden staircase will lead you up to the museum. The museum, officially recognised as a 'Maison des illustres' ('Houses of the Famous'), displays objects and photographs that help provide a better understanding of the composer's creative process. In fact, Debussy liked to surround himself with objects from different places and artistic movements, which influenced his music. For example, a Japanese lacquered panel, which came from his Parisian mansion, depicting two fish swimming under a willow, musically metamorphosed into 'Poissons d'or', a piano piece (1907). A small museum but a grand tribute to one of France's greatest composers!

The Grand Trianon was designed in 1687 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart to allow King Louis XIV to escape the excessive luxury of the Court and to safeguard his love affairs there. The site indeed exudes a sense of intimacy and refinement. The palace is inspired by Italian architecture and invites you to poetry and leisurely strolls. It was built on the site of Louis XIV’s former Porcelain Trianon. A little fun fact: in the past, the Grand Trianon was surrounded by thousands of potted flowers, which were changed every day. Today, this tradition is still maintained with each season. The spectacle was truly unique: flowerbeds bursting with blooms of every color and a wide variety of fragrances filled the air. Later on, the Grand Trianon was frequented by Napoleon Bonaparte and by Presidents of the Republic. From 1962 to 1966, General de Gaulle entrusted André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs, with the restoration of the Grand Trianon.

The Petit Trianon was built between 1763 and 1768 by the architect Gabriel, requested by Madame de Pompadour, mistress then friend of king Louis XV. Madame de Pompadour, who wished to “relieve the king’s boredom” — though no longer his mistress, she remained his friend — was the instigator of this small château, built by architect Gabriel between 1763 and 1768. It was erected near the Botanical Garden and the new menagerie, as Louis XV had a keen interest in the sciences. To please the marquise, always at the forefront of fashion, the king’s architect broke away from the rococo aesthetic and adopted a cubic form with very pure lines, in keeping with the brand-new “Greek style” then in vogue. Its simplicity is only apparent, for each façade is different, designed in relation to the space it overlooks: the courtyard, the French Garden with its elegant pavilion, the Botanical Garden, and the Florist’s Garden. Inside, one finds the same modernity of style. Simpler than the rest of the estate, the decoration of the Petit Trianon lies not in lavish materials — gilding is almost absent — but in the refinement of its sculptures, in a château entirely dedicated to nature. Madame de Pompadour died in 1764 and never saw the château completed. Today, it is above all the memory of Marie-Antoinette that it evokes. In 1774, Louis XVI gave the Trianon estate to his wife, who was able to live here a life apart — too much so for some — from the Court.

This artist?s garden is hidden away in a small village south of Évreux in the heart of Normandy. Created ex nihilo on land steeped in history, from the Neolithic to the Allied landings, Engelmarie Sophie, painter-sculptor, created this garden in 2016. An authentic, unclassifiable garden based on the artist?s works inspired by history and linked to nature, and as she says, "nature is my master". Colors, shapes and the vagaries of life demand constant adaptation and humility in creation. Painting, sculpture and works on rice paper bear witness to this approach. From April to October, the garden and studio are open to the public by appointment for small and large groups, with an exhibition by a guest artist every year. Nonancourt was fortified shortly before Verneuil-sur-Avre by Henry Beauclerc circa 1112. 700 years ago, a powerful fortress flanked by 14 towers stood there. During your visit have a look at Saint Martin's Church and its stained-glass windows, listed a Historic Monument in 1975. The Norman half-timbered houses, the remains of the 12th century fortification wall, and walks along the water constitute Nonancourt's heritage. During the 19th century, this town was considered as a "centre of the textile activity" with its cotton and wool spinning mills.

Housed in a former 18th-century timber-framed town house, the Maison des Arts presents occasional art exhibitions.

Overlooking the Rouloir valley, the town of Conches-en-Ouche is surrounded by a forest that is well-known by hunters. Stroll down the streets, explore the squares, and have a look at the keep, the 15th century half-timbered houses, the former abbey with its vaulted cellars, the 16th century stained-glass windows, that are all part of the town's significant cultural heritage. Good to know: Décorchemont (1880-1971) was one of the greatest contemporary glass artists; his work is very distinctive and includes the stained-glass windows of St Odile's Church in Paris and of more than thirty churches in the Eure.

Saint Foy's Church, topped with a 52-metre high spire, was completely rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. With its sober Flamboyant Gothic architecture, the church gives an impression of harmony and grandeur with its apse overlooking the Rouloir river. Inside, have a look at the 22 16th century stained-glass windows that are 10 metres high and form one of the most remarkable examples of glass art of the Renaissance period in Normandy, as well as the various 16th and 17th century statues.

In the Pays d’Ouche, find out about the regional collective memory thanks to thousands of daily life objects and tools. Nestled in the arboretum, the large restored barn, which houses the museum, is in itself, a piece of the collection. Masses of objects and tools from Normandy are displayed. Organised into themes, they reveal how life in Normandy was in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Craftsmanship is also given pride of place with the showcase of old crafts: farrier, shoemaker, saddler, etc. A building is dedicated to apples. It is a pleasant way to discover or re-discover little-known or even lost traditions. In summer, activities and temporary exhibitions are organised for rural life lovers. The arboretum neighbouring the museum comprises an interesting conservation orchard where more than a hundred varieties of apple trees are displayed.

In the form of a suite, it can accommodate 4 people in two separate, elegant and modern bedrooms, well equipped and with very nice bedding. After a good night's sleep, you will be invited to a generous and appetizing breakfast based on good homemade products, brioche, jams, yogurts, and good seasonal fruits. The suite is located in the annex of the main house, right next door. You enter on the ground floor into a small living room all to yourself then access the suite upstairs, with sloping ceilings: on one side a double bedroom with a 160x200 bed (TV), on the other a second bedroom with a 160x200 double bed, both offering a view of the garden; in the center the corridor gives access to the bathroom with toilet. Evelyne welcomes you into the house for a gourmet breakfast by the fireplace, or in fine weather under the pergola facing the large garden with trees, enclosed by hedges. Between two pleasant villages, Breteuil and Conches-en-Ouche, or Verneuil d'Avre and d'Iton a little further, the region is very nice to visit or discover during walks through fields or in the forest. A must-see spot: visit a chocolatrium 13 km away.

A practical office space is located on the landing (with good internet connection), and there is a bright bathroom. The house has reversible air conditioning. Located on Philippe's property, the cottage is attached to his house but offers complete privacy: you have a private terrace on either side of the house and your own private area in the garden (approximately 50m²). The swimming pool is shared and open from May to September: 14 x 4 meters, 1.45m deep, and heated to a minimum of 25°C. There is also a pétanque court. Your pets are welcome, provided you respect the small dog on the property.
