15. Guinguette Trail – Starting point: Tourville-sur-Pont-Audemer Town Hall

Set among valleys and Norman orchards, this demanding and hilly route offers a rewarding walk punctuated by panoramic views and the ever-present influence of water. The trail repeatedly opens onto sweeping views over the valleys of the Risle, the Sébec and the Tourville, offering ample reward for the effort required by the many climbs. Water is a constant companion throughout the walk. Springs, small streams to cross, and, right from the start, the moats of the Château de Tourville, still filled with water and fed by clearly visible springs behind the building, all contribute to the character of the route. The grounds of the Château de Tourville, dating from the 19th century, are now home to a private agricultural school, complete with an educational farm and accommodation for groups. In front of the town hall stands a turbine that recalls the ingenuity of the Count of Tourville. At the end of the 19th century, he installed this machine, powered by the waters of the Sébec, to generate his own direct-current electricity. It supplied power to the château and several village houses long before alternating current became widespread. Nearby, the communal cider press, rebuilt in 2008, hosts village events throughout the year, including the Apple Festival held every October—an ideal opportunity to extend the experience of this delightful walk.

14. Gallows Trail – Starting point: Former Town Hall of Saint-Germain-Village

This route takes its name from a place steeped in history. A gallows was a raised structure, visible from afar, where those sentenced to death were displayed as a warning to the population. Traditionally erected on a high point at the edge of a town, the gallows of Pont-Audemer gave this hillside a grim reputation. Today, however, the site offers one of the most striking panoramic views over the town, complemented by the viewpoints from the heights of the cemeteries of Saint-Germain and Pont-Audemer on either side of the road. The Church of Saint-Germain bears witness to the age and importance of the village. Its Romanesque nave dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, its 14th-century bell tower and its sculpted corbels depicting masks and animal heads form a richly expressive architectural ensemble. The Château des Préaux, visible from the road, stands on the site of the former Abbey of Saint-Léger-de-Préaux, a women's abbey founded in the 11th century. No visible remains of the abbey survive today. The landscape alternates between open fields on the plateau, woodland along the valley slopes and preserved bocage countryside with hedgerows and half-timbered houses, creating a succession of quintessentially Norman scenes. Between sweeping views, Romanesque stonework and medieval memories, this is a walk suspended between sky and valley.

11. Green Bush Trail – Starting point: Les Préaux Town Hall or Saint-Symphorien Town Hall

This route crosses a landscape where religious history and Norman nature blend together with remarkable harmony. The most striking testimony to this heritage is the Abbey of Les Préaux. Once a powerful medieval institution whose influence extended far beyond the region, only a large section of its enclosure wall remains today—a simple yet evocative reminder of its former grandeur. The municipality of Les Préaux itself was created in 1844 through the merger of two parishes, each with its own abbey: one for men and the other for women. Both churches along the route are well worth a stop. In Les Préaux, the former 12th-century Romanesque abbey chapel impresses with its understated stone architecture. In Saint-Symphorien, visitors will discover a more eclectic style and one of the area’s most remarkable natural treasures: a millennium-old yew tree rising more than 20 metres high, an awe-inspiring presence in the landscape. The scenery unfolds with equal generosity. From open farmland on the plateau to tree-lined viewpoints overlooking the valley, and from preserved bocage countryside with hedgerows to traditional half-timbered houses, the route offers a succession of quintessentially Norman landscapes that change with every step. From medieval stonework to a thousand-year-old yew tree, this walk is a journey through the centuries.

12. Saint Lawrence Trail – Starting point: Village Square, Selles

Between bocage countryside and woodland, this hilly route winds alongside streams that flow into the Risle, revealing charming wooded landscapes and beautiful half-timbered houses typical of the Norman countryside. For centuries, water was far more than a scenic feature in these valleys. During the 19th century, the Tourville Stream (also known as the Barbottes Stream) powered the wheels of a cotton mill that employed around forty workers. Today, this once-thriving industry has vanished, leaving only traces in local memory. The village of Selles also has a surprising artisanal heritage. In the 1830s, around one hundred weavers worked in the hamlet of La Girotterie, producing textiles that were transported to the markets of Lisieux. This activity continued for nearly three-quarters of a century and played an important role in the local economy. The village is also marked by remarkable stories of generosity. Célestin Drou, the son of local farmers, made his fortune in Le Havre before becoming a shareholder in the Cusenier company in Paris. In 1890, he left part of his wealth to his native village. Thanks to this donation, the town hall and school were built in 1904, and the village square was completely redesigned, with several houses even being relocated for the project. A walk where every step reveals a community that, through the centuries, has combined hard work, ingenuity and solidarity.
