The village of Rilhac-Xaintrie is located on the border between Limousin and Auvergne: the Salers cows and the typical habitat betray the influence of these two countries. All along the circuit, you will have the chance to observe a magnificent panorama (with view on the puy du Bassin, the Monédières, the puy de Sancy and the puy Mary). And in the course of the small villages you will come across several small springs, accompanied by a wash-house, the ruins of a mill, a fountain or a watering place.

The Pradelles hiking trail. This pleasant trail offers many views of Enchanet Lake, which stretches for over 13 km. You will enjoy the brightness and calm of its waters, as well as the beauty of its steep and wooded banks. Between points 3 and 4, you will discover a geological curiosity: a volcanic chimney formed of black rocks (basalt). Combined with the Le Pont du Rouffet route (junction at Arnac), Le Chemin des Pradelles forms an 18.8 km double loop. A pleasant trail that's generally easy going, with no major difficulties and plenty of views over the 13-km-long Lake Enchanet. Starts from the Paradis La Gineste campsite. The route is punctuated by steep, quiet, wooded banks all along the way, as well as sparse areas of countryside and plains. Along the way, you'll see a variety of architectural influences, reflecting the area's geographical location between the Xaintrie and Châtaigneraie regions.

Our Château is a charming little house that has been completely restored by its owners. The interior layout has been very well thought out, with no loss of space to accommodate architectural constraints. Small but functional! Ranked among the Small Towns full of Character since 2017, Pleaux includes lots of buildings underlining its glorious past. At the very beginning of the Christianity (in the 6th and 7th centuries) in the Upper Auvergne, the city grew around the original Saint John the Bapstist church (nowadays destroyed). We found again the importance of this church into the development of Pleaux in the etymology of the name itself. “Plebes” means in latin a baptismal church. During the 9th century, five monks and a prior came from the Charoux abbey (Haute-Vienne) and settled here. They encouraged the building of the present Saint-Sauveur church, now called the Saint John the Baptist church (listed monument) and a monestary. In 1289, the king Philippe le Bel 4th put a stop to the constant quarrels between the co-lords and the prior signing a charter with the abbot of Charroux. Pleaux became a bastide named Villefranche-de-Pleaux, composed of an original part (villa antiqua) and a new city (bastida) with a square surrounded by houses and in the middle a market hall with a fairground. Pleaux lived in trouble times during the Hundred Years War and the Religious wars. In 1630, a Carmelite convent was established in Pleaux, an important cultural city. Then, in 1806, this convent was transformed into a little seminary, a famous school welcoming the elite of the Cantal county until its removal in 1906. Pleaux was rich in castles and beautiful houses. Five houses with turrets still remain. In the surroundings, the wooden countryside is typical of the Xaintrie region, that is home to lots of traditional buildings, manor houses and opulent-looking agricultural buildings constructed in basalt or granite with roofs in lauzes (volcanic stone) or slates. The Puy Bouval with an altitude of 733m is the highest point in the hamlet of Bouval situated in the village of Barriac-les-Bosquets. You can reach it during a walk named the “Puy Bouval” (2h45 – 11km). A panorama table made in lava will help you to find your way about: the Pleaux plateau, the Cantal mountains, the Sancy mountains and the Limousin region. At the top, there is a statue in bronze of the abbot François Filiol, a martyred priest during the French Revolution. Refusing to take an oath on the “Civil Constitution” of the clergy, he was persued and hunt. He tried to hide in Bouval, his native country, but he was denounced and guillotined in 1783 on May 14th on the little square near the apse of Our Lady of Miracles church in Mauriac.

The Enchanet lake is situated near the Enchanet dam, 13km from Pleaux. 400 ha area, 17km length and more than 60 m of depth. This lake is fed by the Maronne, Bertrande and Etze rivers. It is a paradise for fishermen : trouts, pikeperches, pikes, perches, carps. Fishing on a boat is allowed with a restricted speed. You can take advantage of the Longayroux beach with games for children. Ideal area for quietness and rest.

A long winding ribbon of 17 km and 410 ha fed by the mountainous waters of the Maronne. Its 69m high arch dam was built in 1950 to produce electricity. The spruce-wooded slopes that border it give it the proud appearance of a mountain lake. The lake is home to one of Europe's largest heronries, and predator fishing is an unforgettable experience: day permit (€12) or holiday permit (€33) on sale at www.cartedepeche.fr or from Camping Paradis La Gineste. Les Fermes du Moyen Age is an open-air site where authentic buildings have been reassembled to form a 15th-century village! This village, still under construction, bears witness to the rural life of the people of Xaintrie (nestled between the Dordogne valley and the Auvergne volcanoes). You'll enter several fully furnished farmhouses dating from the late 15th century, as well as outbuildings such as the mill, the chapel and the notary's dwelling.
