This self-guided tour will enable you to discover the specific features of the habitat of old Istres, the way houses were built, the history and legends surrounding the town, and to climb up to the belvedere and the Church of Notre Dame de Beauvoir, which dominates the whole town. It passes close to the city's main tourist sites, which are indicated by pictograms on the map. Along the way, you're free to stop and take a detour to make the most of it.

Section A11 of the GR2013. From Port des Heures Claires (Istres) to Miramas. A 12.3km route to discover the Etang de Berre, then the Etang de l'Olivier and the hill of Saint-Etienne, with panoramic views of the surrounding massifs. After along the pond of the Olivier, continue along the old paths of Transhumance. Detour not to miss that offers exceptional views on the ponds, the Alpilles, the Luberon, the Ventoux, the massif of the star and much more. The Parc de Figuerolles Mediterranean gardens are located on the site of the former Sunhary de Verville family estate. The plantations are organised in 6 gardens, grouped by their resistance to drought. The site of about 2 hectares includes almost 300 plant species representative of flora adapted to the Mediterranean climate, as well as 27 native plant species such as Aleppo pine and evergreen oak, and other species introduced by the Sunhary de Verville family including yucca, crepe myrtle and oleander. Rural houses and other buildings built by farmers, which featured on the land registry from 1817, can still be seen in the park. The houses were used by the owners and/or in some cases for the larger houses, their farming staff. The largest stretches over 3 plots. It had a surface area of 279 m2. It is the large farm that belonged to the Marine Captain Ytier in 1817.

You'll be captivated by the Provençal beauty of this town perched on the water. The In the Footsteps of Mary Magdalene trail takes you north of Martigues. You'll cross the Grand Parc de Figuerolles to enter the Martigues region. You'll follow the banks of the Étang de Berre to reach the town center. Discover the ruins of Figuerolles, Figuerolles Beach, the Cercle de Voile (CVM) water sports center, and then the archaeological site of Tholon and its washhouse. Following the marked trail, you will pass through the Jardin de la Rode, the Jardin de Ferrières, and then the Place des Aires. You will then be in the city center of Martigues. If you feel like it, you can deviate from the trail before entering the gardens and climb the hill to the Chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Marins. It offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city. From the Place des Aires, cross one of Martigues' two blue bridges to reach the Ile district. Walk along the edge of the pond to cross the drawbridge and stop in the Jonquières district, which is the end point of this third stage of the In the Footsteps of Mary Magdalene in Provence trail. Here too, you can deviate from the recommended route to enter the Ile district and discover Martigues' most popular tourist attractions: the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, the Miroir aux Oiseaux, the canals, and the colorful facades of Martigues. Marie-Madeleine's journey continues with stage 4 which takes over from the town centre of Martigues, heading towards Carry-le-Rouet.

Section A07 of the GR2013. From Gare de Croix Sainte (Martigues) to Port de Bouc. A 3.7km route to discover a natural and industrial landscape. The border between the two districts, Martigues and Port de Bouc is marked by the Rivière de la Gafette which is the official border between the two cities. Note: the expansive industrial wasteland of the former Azur Chimie factory, a bromine treatment site, which closed in 2010.

Our house is located in a green valley on the edge of the Etoile massif north of the city. The site is particularly cool, calm and quiet. We have hives in a very large garden on the edge of the hill and are always happy to introduce people to the world of bees and honey. The North Hospital is nearby and easily accessible (less than a half hour walk, five minutes by car). The soap factory opens the doors to its workshops and museum dedicated to Marseille soap. The Savonnerie du Midi is one of the last factories in Marseille to use the traditional skills of a master soap-maker. It has been awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label, and is a member of the Union des Professionnels du Savon de Marseille (UPSM). Free visits Monday to Friday for private customers at 11am and 2pm, by prior arrangement. During school vacations, a 3rd slot is offered at 3:30pm. At the top of Saint-Etienne hill is the Saint Michel chapel (751-987) where Saint John is traditionally celebrated each year. The Chapel Saint Michel is placed as a lookout on the plateau also called "Volturno". Its renovation was undertaken in 1989 by the "Estevenoun" association, the Rotary Club of Istres and other local associations. The new chapel was opened by a mass given by Fr. With 20 species represented at full-scale along a route following their emergence time on Earth, accompanied by explanatory signs on each species and general themes that have all been written under the control of Stéphane JOUVE, head of collections of Palaeontology of the University Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris), attached to the Center for research on the paleobiodiversite and paleoenvironments of the National Museum of history natural (Paris), Dinosaur'Istres, offers to the Once a playful and informative walk for young and old. The site of the Castellan, who has been completely preserved, also offers a diversity and richness of Mediterranean flora which will constitute an additional discovery for visitors. Beyond the discovery of the course of how free and independent, supported by explanatory signs, many activities and tours are available during the summer and throughout the year by the Tourism Office, which appeals to palaeontologists. Located right in the heart of Istres, the Etang de l'Olivier is a jewel with France's highest water jet towering over it. The jet d'eau, located more than 80 meters from the shore in the Castellan cove, reaches a record height of 50 meters. Introduced in 2008, the Jet d'Eau is unique in France for its height, technical innovation and aesthetic prowess. A huge liquid flag, it symbolizes the vitality of the city of Istres. It also helps to oxygenate the Etang de l'Olivier. Unique in France! Technical innovation The water jet is installed on a 6-metre square frame, immersed 50 cm below the water level for better integration into the pond. The stainless steel structure weighs 2200 kilos. The water column is fed by a 125 horsepower pump, located 3.5 meters underwater. This is an authentic Romanesque style chapel. It is one of the oldest in the region. It is still unknown when exactly it was founded, but it’s thought to be between the 10th and the 11th centuries. The Chapelle St-Sulpice reveals the former Istres, as Oppidium du Castellan, an ancient place Celto-Ligure which overlooks the étang de L'olivier. The chapel Saint-Sulpice is a major building of the Romanesque Provence and is classified since 1942 to the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments. Today, the chapel has to promote artists and amateur practices in organizing exhibitions around the arts and Visual arts. It offers throughout the year a programme of exhibitions of artistic practices in a spirit of openness on contemporary art.These exhibitions, bringing together professionals and amateurs, are aimed at the broadest audience. A listed historical monument. The Portail d’Arles was constructed between 1771 and 1773 on the site of the old entrance in the collapsed ramparts. The portal of Arles was built by the master masons Jean Tabusteau of Istres and François Peytrau de St Mitre with stones from a local quarry. Slightly concave in shape, its anterior surface of great sobriety, is decorated with two flower garlands. The Roches Blanches Park is a peaceful place for relaxation and fun for locals and tourists.
