An itinerary adapted to discover the medieval center of Istres, typically Provencal, with free illuminated documentation. The Tourist Office invites you to take a tour of the historic center, which will plunge you into the medieval past of our beautiful town, since the first written traces date back to the 10th century, in 944 to be exact. This self-guided tour will enable you to discover the specific features of the habitat of old Istres, the way houses were built, the history and legends surrounding the town, and to climb up to the belvedere and the Church of Notre Dame de Beauvoir, which dominates the whole town. The Tourist Office offers you an itinerary for discovering our beautiful town of Istres by bike. This itinerary takes in the city's cycle lanes and paths, as well as little-used roads. It passes close to the city's main tourist sites, which are indicated by pictograms on the map. Along the way, you're free to stop and take a detour to make the most of it.

Section A11 of the GR2013. From Port des Heures Claires (Istres) to Miramas. A 12.3km route to discover the Etang de Berre, then the Etang de l'Olivier and the hill of Saint-Etienne, with panoramic views of the surrounding massifs. After along the pond of the Olivier, continue along the old paths of Transhumance. Detour not to miss that offers exceptional views on the ponds, the Alpilles, the Luberon, the Ventoux, the massif of the star and much more. Section A10 of the GR2013. From Ranquet beach south of Istres to Port des Heures Claires (Istres). A 3.2km route to discover the coastal path along the Etang de Berre, with its beaches and creeks. This route runs along the sea of Leo by the coastal path to then reach Istres and discover the pond of the Olivier. Beaches, coves, cafes, restaurants and small ports will scroll over the trail.

Nature is often very beautiful here and the farm animals can be seen very closely. What magic to see the gaze of children resting, sometimes for the first time, on curious, majestic animals. Walking trail for exploring the farming activity in the Grand Parc de Figuerolles. Circular route along Étang de Berre. In detail : Natural and rural landscapes. The Parc de Figuerolles Mediterranean gardens are located on the site of the former Sunhary de Verville family estate. The plantations are organised in 6 gardens, grouped by their resistance to drought. The site of about 2 hectares includes almost 300 plant species representative of flora adapted to the Mediterranean climate, as well as 27 native plant species such as Aleppo pine and evergreen oak, and other species introduced by the Sunhary de Verville family including yucca, crepe myrtle and oleander. Rural houses and other buildings built by farmers, which featured on the land registry from 1817, can still be seen in the park. The houses were used by the owners and/or in some cases for the larger houses, their farming staff. The largest stretches over 3 plots. It had a surface area of 279 m2. It is the large farm that belonged to the Marine Captain Ytier in 1817.

Admire the imposing Opies and cliffs of Mont Menu ! Back to the car park, climb to the right, between the Chabaud arena and the cemetery, the marked path of the Col of Melet tagged GR® and PR. Follow this marked path for 1 km, cross the channel of the valley of Baux and join an intersection where is implanted a panel of the Department. 1- fork right on the tarmac path marked PR, following the panel "Eyguières par le vallon des Glauges 7.8 km". Cross again the channel, then at the bend to the left take straight on the path of St-Pierre-de-Vence, marked blue and green. Follow it on 1.5 km. 2- At the end of the road, turn left on the paved road Glauges, marked PR. At the entrance to the domain vallon des Glauges, leave the paved road to climb the path on the right, marked PR, which passes through the vineyards. Join 500 m further an intersection with a DFCI barrier. 3- Pass the barrier to the right and follow this marked path PR. Leave a property on the right, pass a second DFCI barrier and cross the next junction. 300 m further, stay on the left and join a cross a few meters lower. 4- borrow the path to the left, signposted GR®. Continue straight for 1.2 km, leaving aside the different paths encountered, and join the D17 road. (Caution, traffic!) Turn left on this marked GR®, follow it for 300 m and turn left on a tarred road. Find 150 m further the intersection with the panel of the Department and the path of the Col de Melet. Resume this path and return to the starting point.

Between scrubland, olive groves and views, a nice walk at the intersection of massifs surrounded by birdsongs! At the Gilouse fountain, cross the road and take the DFCI track that rises in front of the fountain. Follow the red and white markings (GR®).). 1 - At the junction, turn left on the gravel path down below. After the gate, continue straight and cross the second gate. 2 - At the crossroads, leave behind the gate on your left and continue to the road sign of the department. Follow the direction of "Lamanon par les crêtes du défends". " 3 - At the fork, follow the left path rising and then turn right at the next intersection and begin the steep slope. 4 - At the column, continue to follow the markings and turn left. Then continue straight on the wide track. 5 - At the crossroads where the tank "Charlotte" is located, turn right and follow the trail named "Eyguières par le chemin du défends". Then take the small path off to the right and begin the descent. 6 - Cross the gate, turn right and continue on the track. 7 - Turn right when the path splits in two. At the concrete road, turn right and continue for a few meters on the hill before turning left on the small trail. Continue until the D17 without entering the private property. 8 - At the paved road, turn right on the Chemin de la Fontaine Gilouse and end the hike.

Marina with over 200 moorings on the west side of the Etang de Berre. Facing east and backing onto the Heures Claires plateau, this site is home to a nautical base for sailing and windsurfing on the vast Etang de Berre. The terraces of the restaurants and the tranquility of the site are much appreciated by walkers. The port is also a place for festivities: water fleas, "oursinades", guided boat trips in season... Please note: Major redevelopment work has begun at the Port des Heures Claires. In addition to the extension, with 160 additional berths, the entire facility (including the nautical base) is being reconfigured to enable all users to make the most of it. Parking spaces will be created, and a pedestrian promenade will be laid out, along with water sports-related shops. Each stage of this guided hike will allow you to understand the importance of fresh water in the daily life of the Martigues people, a precious resource that has shaped the identity of this Mediterranean city. You will learn that the inhabitants of each district had their own source of drinking water supplied by the Martigues Canal, which has now disappeared. Did you know that the fountain located on Place Mirabeau was moved from Cours du 4 Septembre in Jonquières by the Jourdan family following the extension of their hotel "La Goutte d'Or"? That the entrance to Martigues began at the intersection of Avenue Frédérique Mistral and that part of the Jonquières district was nothing but marshland? That buildings that are still in use were once used as cisterns, that when you look up you will see now-forgotten ramparts and that old wells can be found in the heart of the gardens of recent buildings? Under the commentary of Bernard, president of the Randonnée Ski Découverte (RSD) association, you will take a new look at the architectural heritage of Martigues. At the top of Saint-Etienne hill is the Saint Michel chapel (751-987) where Saint John is traditionally celebrated each year. The Chapel Saint Michel is placed as a lookout on the plateau also called "Volturno". Its renovation was undertaken in 1989 by the "Estevenoun" association, the Rotary Club of Istres and other local associations. The new chapel was opened by a mass given by Fr. Abdon DONAIN June 23, 1993, on the occasion of the Saint John the Baptist. At the foot of this Chapel, a breathtaking view awaits you... Dinosaur'Istres is a discovery trail on the Castellan hill dedicated to dinosaurs. DINOSAUR'ISTRES, a walk among the great figures dinosaurs the town of Istres, on the Hill of the Castellan, already known and recognized as a remarkable archaeological site (see page...) and emblematic of biodiversity Provencal. With 20 species represented at full-scale along a route following their emergence time on Earth, accompanied by explanatory signs on each species and general themes that have all been written under the control of Stéphane JOUVE, head of collections of Palaeontology of the University Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris), attached to the Center for research on the paleobiodiversite and paleoenvironments of the National Museum of history natural (Paris), Dinosaur'Istres, offers to the Once a playful and informative walk for young and old. The site of the Castellan, who has been completely preserved, also offers a diversity and richness of Mediterranean flora which will constitute an additional discovery for visitors. Beyond the discovery of the course of how free and independent, supported by explanatory signs, many activities and tours are available during the summer and throughout the year by the Tourism Office, which appeals to palaeontologists. Lectures will also be scheduled. Located right in the heart of Istres, the Etang de l'Olivier is a jewel with France's highest water jet towering over it. The jet d'eau, located more than 80 meters from the shore in the Castellan cove, reaches a record height of 50 meters. Introduced in 2008, the Jet d'Eau is unique in France for its height, technical innovation and aesthetic prowess. A huge liquid flag, it symbolizes the vitality of the city of Istres. It also helps to oxygenate the Etang de l'Olivier. Unique in France! Technical innovation The water jet is installed on a 6-metre square frame, immersed 50 cm below the water level for better integration into the pond. The stainless steel structure weighs 2200 kilos. The water column is fed by a 125 horsepower pump, located 3.5 meters underwater. In figures : - Average jet height: 50 metres - Water outlet speed: 120 km/h - Flow rate: 80 litres/second - Pump total power 92,000 watts Note that the water jet can be switched off on days when the Mistral wind blows or when the weather is inclement.

The large Romaniquette beach (7,300 m2), located to the east of the town, close to the historic center, is a summer paradise, thanks to the quality of its site, its panoramic view of the Etang de Berre and its easy access. Boaters may have books for free, from a choice of 350 books. Novels, comics, publications, magazines, destined for 7 to 77 years old, were donated to the city of Istres by the lending library to 'feed' this beach library. Two agents, made available by the Office of tourism of Istres, are present from 11 h to 18 h (7 days) in July and August, in order to manage the library and help readers in their choice.

Located near the Saint Sulpice chapel and overlooking the etang de l’Olivier, the Mediterranean garden was developed from 1997 by Istres’s Green Areas department. It is home to one hundred varieties of plants and bushes from the Mediterranean basin. A key element behind our 4-flower award for the ‘Villes & villages fleuris’ label, the Mediterranean garden offers a unique and perfect setting for a walk. When the fair weather arrives, come and stroll through this garden which offers a superb panorama on the etang de l’Olivier and its water jet. With more than 100 species from the Mediterranean basin, the garden features a high-quality plant environment. An ideal choice for family outings. This is an authentic Romanesque style chapel. It is one of the oldest in the region. It is still unknown when exactly it was founded, but it’s thought to be between the 10th and the 11th centuries. This religious 9th century chapel is a very pure Romanesque style. This is one of the oldest in the region. Its Bell was also called Sainte-catherine. It has a lantern of the dead. The Chapelle St-Sulpice reveals the former Istres, as Oppidium du Castellan, an ancient place Celto-Ligure which overlooks the étang de L'olivier. The chapel Saint-Sulpice is a major building of the Romanesque Provence and is classified since 1942 to the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments. Today, the chapel has to promote artists and amateur practices in organizing exhibitions around the arts and Visual arts. It offers throughout the year a programme of exhibitions of artistic practices in a spirit of openness on contemporary art.These exhibitions, bringing together professionals and amateurs, are aimed at the broadest audience. The beauty and the acoustics of the place also invite arts of gesture, poetry and song to cross their respective creations.Each exhibition in its staging is designed to resonate with this exceptional place and return the echo of a balance maintained between art and architecture.

A listed historical monument. The Portail d’Arles was constructed between 1771 and 1773 on the site of the old entrance in the collapsed ramparts. The portal of Arles was built by the master masons Jean Tabusteau of Istres and François Peytrau de St Mitre with stones from a local quarry. Slightly concave in shape, its anterior surface of great sobriety, is decorated with two flower garlands. The arch rests on two pillars and his Keystone is decorated with a coat of arms of Louis XV style. A great short ledge at the top of the monument.

The Roches Blanches Park is a peaceful place for relaxation and fun for locals and tourists. It is an integral part of the town’s history as evidenced by the fossilized oyster beds in the eastern part of the park. Dating from around 15 million years ago (Miocene), according to some, these oysters gave the town its name, ‘Ostreion’ designating a bed of oysters in Greek. From the ruins of the buildings of this former royal saltworks, easily accessible, but with authorization, you can access magnificent discovery trails on 4.5 kilometers of hiking trails.
