Le chemin des laines interpretation trail

A fun and educational walk to discover how pastoral activity has transformed the landscape. A trail that takes you on a journey through the garrigue, a Mediterranean landscape shaped by man's pastoral activities over the millennia and up until the 1950s. The Chemin des laines owes its name to the scraps of wool hung on bushes by ewes as they grazed in the garrigue. Today, many vestiges remain along the paths between Vaunage and Sommierois, including the typical dry-stone constructions known as "capitelles", which have recently been restored. This trail also offers fine views over the Vaunage plain. Itinerary : 1. Go to Calvisson village center, Place Général de Gaulle. Take rue de Plaisance, then turn right onto rue du 8 mai 1945 to reach the D107, which you cross to reach Mazet de Guiraud. 2. Follow Chemin Font de Coucou then Ournèzes then Balcon de la Liquière. 3. At the Fontaine du Coucou, follow the signs for Queyrolles, then turn right to admire the capitelles and views over the plain as far as the Balcon de la Liquière. 4. At the Balcon de la Liquière, you can continue the Balade du Coucou loop, also known as the sentier des capitelles, by turning left towards La Queyrolle (loop) and then back up to the Balcon de La Liquière (+3 km). 5. Follow La Liquière then Grande Place, Puech des Buis, Labadel, Mas de Puech Long, Le Terme Blanc, La Manade, Chantale Basse, Val Claude, Cante-Perdrix, Maupas and Ournèzes. 6. Then direction Chemin Font du Coucou, Mazet de Guiraud and return to Place du Général de Gaulle via Rue du 8 mai 1945 and Rue de Plaisance to Place du Général de Gaulle. Bonus: Download testimonials from shepherds and local residents and listen to them as you stroll along, using the pictogram markers.

GOOD TO KNOW : Since prehistoric times, people have settled on the Vaunage, a large, beautiful plain between Nîmes, the banks of the Vidourle and the Mediterranean. In Roman times, the road linking Nîmes to Sommières brought the region to life, with its many farms. The present-day village of Calvisson was formed in the Middle Ages with the establishment of the priory of Saint Saturnin, of which the church remains the most beautiful witness, followed by the construction of a castle on the heights in the 11th century, which bears witness to the liveliness of the Wars of Religion. Indeed, Calvisson is one of the high points in the history of Protestant resistance in the lowlands. The village took off in the 18th and 19th centuries, thanks to its wine merchants. A new art of living took hold, reflected in the construction of fine residences.

Nîmes Arena

The amphitheatre (or arena) at Nîmes is the best preserved in the Roman world. From the end of the 1st century AD, it hosted wild animal hunts and gladiatorial combats. Today, numerous events take place here. The amphitheatre is 133 m long and 101 m wide. 21 m high, with two levels of arcades, its exterior façade is divided into 60 bays. Numerous staircases and 5 circular galleries ensure optimal circulation. More than 23,000 Gallo-Romans attended the gladiatorial and animal fights on the 34 tiers, according to their social rank. In the Middle Ages, the monument was transformed into a fortress, providing refuge for the population in case of danger. Later, the interior was occupied by private homes until the 19th century. In 1809, the houses, chapels and château of the Viscounts of Nîmes were demolished to restore the monument to its former glory. Today, the arena offers a prestigious setting for numerous events. The House of Boutis

The House of Boutis

A collection of boutis embroidery, with exceptional pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Maison du Boutis is a museum and workshop dedicated to the traditional art of boutis, a technique of embroidery in relief used to make clothes and household linen. The assembly of two pieces of fabric embellished with small-stitch embroidery will be ‘emboutied’ (trimmed) with strands of cotton. These works are dedicated to the happy events of life, and are above all highly symbolic motifs that are embroidered. The museum has a unique collection tracing the history of this craft, which became an art form in its own right in the 18th and 19th centuries in Provence and the Bas-Languedoc. Come and discover these exceptional works. Boutis embroidery has been listed as a French intangible cultural heritage site since 2019. Introductory and advanced courses in the art of boutis and specific workshops, such as ‘indiennage à l'ancienne’ and ‘piqué marseillais’, are organised throughout the year. Guided group tours are also available by prior arrangement (maximum 15 people). There is also a gift shop, offering souvenirs, introductory boutis kits, fabrics from the museum's collection (reproductions of 18th-century originals) and a specialist bookshop. For those who wish to join the ‘Les Cordelles Boutis en Vaunage’ Association: please complete the dedicated online form. A meeting can be arranged every Monday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm (except during school holidays) at the Espace Herboux in Calvisson.
