Discover the End of the World at Yelloh Village Camping

This walk will take you to the heart of the forest at Les Cammazes to discover the artificial works created by Vauban in the 17th century to complete Pierre Paul Riquet's innovative network. On the programme: crossing the Vauban vault, walking along the Rigole de la Montagne through the forest. Les Cammazes is part of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park. Starting from Sorèze, 15km of trail through the mountains, 5hrs. This route includes a shorter option: 12km, 4h30. From the Causse to Berniquaut via Saint-Jammes (variant): discover the wonders of Sorèze natural heritage and superb panoramic views. This route has a shorter variant: 12km, 4H30.

A route along Rigole de la Plaine, linking Saint-Ferréol and Lenclas lake; a shaded route with steep slopes. Notice to amateurs! Start: from Revel at the Moulin du Roy municipal campsite (departure area of the green route) This route has an ochre-coloured compacted sand surface that is not suitable for rollerblades. With a width of 2m, it is reserved for non-motorised modes of transport (except for horse riders). It is ideal for walking, mountain biking and provides a 17 km link to Lenclas lake from Revel. Once you reach Lenclas, the green route ends. You can then continue for around 25 km on a track to the Canal du Midi. V84 or Véloccitane is a whole itinerary from Béziers to the Canal du Midi at Naurouze threshold, via Bédarieux, Olargues, Saint-Pons-de-Thomières, Mazamet, Castres and Revel. Don't miss a visit to the Réservoir, a kind of museum dedicated to Canal du Midi history at Saint-Ferréol.

The GR®653 crosses 10 départements, including Haute-Garonne, over a distance of 140km. This section of Via Tolosana arrives in Toulouse via the Canal du Midi and Lauragais hills and plain. Starting in Arles, Via Tolosana or Via Arletanensis heads towards the tomb of the Apostle James the Greater. From Camargue to Toulouse, GR®653 first follows Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road, then enters the foothills of Haut-Languedoc. This historic route runs through a vast landscape, enhanced by a rich architectural heritage. After Toulouse, GR653 crosses Gascony, northern Bigorre and Béarn. Then it enters Aspe valley and Aragon, in Spain. Voie d'Arles joins ‘el Camino frances’ at Puente-la-Reina. In the land of the sources of the Canal du Midi. From Revel royal bastide to the banks of Saint-Ferréol lake. Follow the old path that used to link the village to the abbey of Villelongue. Signs: Yellow markings The trail follows the old path that linked the village to the abbey and starts at the top of the village near the towers and medieval garden, at the foot of the Carsac stone. Take the small paved road to the left of the sign showing the three footpaths of Saint-Martin-le-Vieil. At the fork, leave the path "sentier des Capitelles" on the left , and carry on straight ahead. At the level of the vineyards, a marker will direct you to a path separating the different plots of land. This one will lead you through the vineyards and then, in the undergrowth, on a slightly sandy earth path. After a short hour's walk (half of the circuit), we arrive on the part of the path overlooking the abbey. We can then see the abbey, majestic, in its bosky bower. A visit of the abbey and the splendid garden is a must. For those who wish, a variant will take you to an old lime kiln.To reach it, cross the small bridge over the "La Vernassonne" and just after the last building on the left, take the path that climbs gently upwards: count one-hour round trip but it is worth it ! The return trip promises to be very pleasant; to do so, take the track starting from the parking lot and go along the edge of the wood. Then at the crossroads, turn right, make a small effort before reaching the plateau. The wooded part will be very nice in summer. When you reach the paved road, continue and then take the track on the right and, a little further on, a track on your right. During the descent at 50m on your right stands a “capitelle” (dry-stone hut) with as always, the doorway to the south.  As soon as you discover it, you will recognize the village and its two towers of the feudal castle, announcing you the end of the hike.

This trail goes down from the village into the Lampy valley, discovering the river and the leisure lake. Signs: Yellow markings Pass in front of the towers and then on the panoramic terrace in front of the town hall. You have the choice between the stairs on the left or the path straight ahead, you will end up at the same point! Cross the small road, go down the stairs opposite then join the parking lot on the other side of the D4 down the village. Go in the direction of the bridge and pass over it. On the outside of the bend, a variant of about 1.2km aller-retour will give you a very nice view of the village and the Pyrenees. Taking the bend, cross the road and take a track on the edge of the woods towards the banks of the Lampy. Further on, at the level of the footbridge, it is advised to you in summer time to follow the small loop in undergrowth which is very pleasant! On the way back, cross the river by the footbridge and turn right towards the lake by going around it. Cross the D34 in order to follow a small road going up slowly. You will then alternate tarred and earthy sections to reach the heart of the village.

Come and discover a ride through the Tarn department on a loop of over 500 km, open to riders. From the Montagne Noire to the Pays des Bastides, passing through the Gaillac vineyards, the Tarn valley, the Sidobre and the Monts de Lacaune, you will be amazed by the diversity of our landscapes. This itinerary is largely based on the GR® network and can be discovered at your convenience over one or more days. A must-do with your horse or by joining one of the 10 equestrian tourism centres affiliated to the Comité Départemental de Tourisme Equestre du Tarn.

The waters of the Dure, loaded with shale, have the property of degreasing sheep's wool. Very early on, fulling mills were installed there: the wool was entirely processed here to be transformed into cloth. Signs: Yellow Markings Departure from the parking lot at the north exit of the village. Just after the Saint-Denis gate, take the D8 for 150m uphill. At the first fork in the road on the right, go past the farm "Bellevue". View of the Alzeau and Dure gorges and the village on its promontory. On the first part of the circuit, the paths leading to the various (private) mills follow one another. These took advantage of the driving force of the water to turn mill stones and other machines. The particular quality of the water of the Dure, which had the necessary properties for cleaning and wool degreasing, allowed the development of a textile industry. After crossing the hamlet of "Franc", cut the D8 and take the road opposite, the path heads west towards the Alzeau valley. You will enjoy the view of the Pyrenees. Arriving at the pig farm, turn left on the downhill path. 600 m further on, a fork on the right will make you join the Alzeau river by going down in the undergrowth. The river lost its mills in the 13th century when part of its water was captured to feed the Canal du Midi (gully of the Montagne Noire). Follow the river up to the bridge of "l'Isoule" dating from the 12th century: observe the two arches and the remarkable ferns on the nearby banks. Go back on the path for 100m, take the time to observe the traces of cart wheels in the stone and then turn right. Slight ascent in the shade of the vegetation then pass under a power line. At the crossroads with the track, continue straight ahead. Then quickly the markers will guide you back to the undergrowth, allowing you to discover a capitelle (dry stone hut). It is visible from a small layon on the left. When you get back to the main track, a little further on the right, a promontory with a view of the “Chateau de Villeneuve” and the gardens below. At the exit of the wood, a large open area with a breathtaking view over the Pyrenees; and back to the village of Montolieu.

An opportunity to discover an exceptionally varied flora and some of the most beautiful views on the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. Signs: Yellow markings The start of the trail is in the lower part of the village, route de Fraisse-Cabardès just at the entrance of the parking lot at the level of the signpost. Take the direction of the place called "L'Horte" along the cemetery. Go up in the direction of the Saint-Roch chapel (lectern, cross, viewpoint on the village). The path passes just below the chapel. You can reach it by a small picturesque path.  You will be able to appreciate the peaceful setting, the majestic trees and the stone benches. Come down from the chapel and continue the progression on the path to discover the capitelles (drystone huts) on both sides. The signs will guide you gently northwards in the middle of low vegetation and then gradually along the edge of the woods towards the west. When you arrive on the paved road, turn right then left at the intersection with the D148. Go down towards the village and from the first loops, before crossing a bridge, go down on the left on a very old path. It is quite steep for the first few metres, it winds through the "Combe Belle". Enjoy the beautiful section restored by a local resident. At the end of the road, you will find the D148 which brings you back to the starting point.

Nearby, after crossing the Mazamet's Hymalayan footbridge at 70 meters high over the Arnette river, you will find the medieval village of Hautpoul and its gardens, as well as, on the GR7, the House of Wood and Toy, its arboretum and its orchard. Belvedere on the Lauragais, oppidum, hiking, free flights... Big and small walkers will fall under its charm. This site, inhabited from prehistoric times until the 13th century, is the witness of people who were living here. Here at the south side, natural cavities with large porches were used as houses. Then, from the Neolithic period until the conquest of the Gaul, communities have be able to grow here thanks to the strategic position and good natural defence positions. On the road to Berniquaut, you will meet the "Peiro Ficada" located on the edge of the ancient crest road. This megalith may have been used as marker or as landmark in different times. This vertical flagstone is sometimes called "La Pierre des Fusillés" because of 86 hemispherical hollows which look like bullet holes on the surface. There are many unanswered questions about this stone, espacially about the reason why people have made these hollows. It is likely that the monument was respected and honoured because they were hosting some supernatural beings.

In the secret underground of the Black Moutain. The Causse Plateau is a unique archeological site in France thanks to the value, the rarity and the number of the remains discovered here. Located on the heights of Soreze, this plateau is riddled with more than 7000-meter-long of underground galleries, as the Calel cavern (caving site). You will find on the plateau educational panels, a viewing table and a picnic table. The point of view from the Fendeille rock, which dominates the plain, is in itself an experience well worth the visit. The pathway about the geological structure called "Secrets of the Causse in Soreze" will help you to discover this exceptionnal site. A technical jewel in the heart of the Montagne Noire, Saint-Ferréol lake awaits you for swimming or family fun. The Saint-Ferréol lake nestles in a valley on the course of the Laudot river. The site is surrounded by the first tree-covered peaks of the Montagne Noire, with their shades of green. Built in 1667, Riquet's water reservoir was planted with ornamental trees in the 18th century. The first plantings stabilised the structure of the reservoir. A pine forest was planted all around the lake. Even the air smells good here, thanks to the pine trees that line the beaches. You're warmly invited to take advantage of this green canopy to relax, picnic or even snorkel! A seventeenth-century dyke, as well as a magnificent English-style park, a spray and waterfalls built in the nineteenth century, enhance the site. Gentlemen used to invite ladies to come here for a gallant stroll in the shade of the trees. Today, it's a great place to spend some quality time with the family, with supervised swimming in summer, a leisure centre and restaurants offering great views over the lake. Escape guaranteed! Built at an altitude of 272 meters, at the foot of the Black Moutain in the shadow of the Berniquaut peak, Soreze is a small, historic town full of character. It is pleasant to stroll through the streets lined with half-timbered, jettied-out houses from the 16th and the 17th century. The 15th century St. Martin bell-tower is the sole vestige of the former parish church burnt down during the Religion Wars. Soreze owns its fame to its Abbey school, a classified "historical monument" since 1988. Visit the Abbey school and you'll be able to imagine was daily life look like in this very particular environment, renowned well beyond our borders for its innovative teaching techniques.

In the heart of the town, you can discover the history of the local wood and marquetry craftsmen who have contributed to Revel international renown. The museum also hosts exhibitions showcasing contemporary creations. From tree to art. Taking advantage of the force of the wind blowing across Lauragais hillsides or the water flowing through the valleys, several mills have been built in our destination to grind grains from local crops or make textiles. Today, some mills are still part of our landscape, carefully preserved as witnesses to another era. Among the mills still standing, you can admire the following from the road: - Mourvilles-Hautes mill, a windmill and tower with two pairs of millstones, whose roof was restored in 1997. A second, more recent mill in front of the miller's house has a tiled roof. - Three mills in Le Vaux are located below the castle, a little further south. One of these mills is among the eldest in the area, dating back to the 16th century. - the windmills of Saint-Félix-Lauragais, located on the aptly-named ‘butte des trois moulins’, visible from the Rue des Nobles, the Moulin du Chapitre at the foot of the Montfort tower and the Moulin de la Croix (on the Route de Toulouse, next to the chemist's shop), which was given a state-of-the-art wooden roof in autumn 2024. - There are also mills along Sor stream between Revel and Durfort. These are private properties. Moulin du Chapitre and Moulin de l'Abbé offer bed and breakfast accommodation. - Durfort town council has created a heritage trail upstream from the village, along Sor. The town of Revel was founded by the French King Philippe VI in 1342. This bastide is organised around a central square where the streets converge in a grid pattern. This square with its polychrome galleries and arcades of brick, wood and stone is a real setting for a splendid medieval market hall. The 14th century market hall is one of the largest in France. It is 39 m each side and is supported by 79 oak pillars. It is the heart Revel citizen life, especially on Saturday mornings when one of the 10 most beautiful markets in France takes place. Revel Belfry, neo-classical style, dates from 1834 replacing a half-timbered and bricks architecture. The belfry rings the bell for the whole town. The country guard and town crier lived there until 1965. It had several functions: watchtower, town clocks and bells, prison and town hall. These two intertwined buildings are subject to a major restoration campaign scheduled to run from late 2024 to spring 2026. Climbing up the belfry will no longer be possible. The roof will be re-tiled, fragile beams replaced, some pillars reinforced, the bell tower masonry restored. The dome covered with its original mateial: fish-scale slates. The clocks will be settled in their original height and the terrace cladding removed to reveal the terracotta floor tiles of it conceals. The terrace door will be returned to its original position. The interior of the tower will also be refurbished to provide the best possible conditions to welcome the public after the works. In the meantime, the Tourist Office will be moved to the Musée du Bois et de la Marqueterie.
