Camping La Mare aux Fées: Exploring Roquefeuil's Charms

This walk offers an impressive view over the valley of Hers, overlooking the village of Bélesta .

This lovely hike is in a beautiful pine forest that extends over 1,000 ha to Sault plateau . Composed of conifers, it is one of the most beautiful of the Ariege.

This route round - trip allows you to progress in the parade the throats of Frau until the town of Comus (Aude). 3km high, hers dug into the mountain a veritable canyon of 400m meters high.

This is a tour that is done in two days on a path, both wooded and steep, along part of the river Hers, borrowing the old railway line through the Orris Castle Roquefixade.

This itinerary which crosses very varied environments, alley of boxwood, limestone scree, forest of deciduous trees and pines, pastoral space, offers remarkable views on the "pog" of Montségur, the village and the "Roc de la Tour".

Discovery of an exceptional natural environment At an altitude of 850 m, this chasm is about 60m by 30m and is accessible thanks to a platform of vision for a visit in full safety. It is the abyss of both absorption and collapse. The total depth reaches about 110m. This hole was a mass grave. When the horses were at the end of their life, their owner took them to this chasm. We guess then why this hole was prized crows.

One can, without fear of being accused of exaggeration, describe Fontestorbes as "Wonder of the World" and contrary to the seven wonders of the ancient world, all having in common to be the fact of the man, Fontestorbes is the only fruit of the chance of nature. A rare phenomenon and really extraordinary. For most of the year (7 to 9 months), the fountain runs constantly. On the other hand, during periods of low water from July to September, one day, it becomes abruptly intermittent over a complete cycle of about 60 to 90 minutes.

The Frau Gorge is the result of a long geological evolution. The mountain of Frau is an accumulation of secondary folded and compressed tablecloths carved by the glaciations, the strong snows and numerous floods digging the valley in gorges.

On this neck that leads to the hamlet of Morenci was an enigmatic cross on which were roughly carved in high relief a face and below the number 8. Below the inscription 1780 seemed to be added. On this Neolithic site one can suppose that this cross had been carved in a megalith carved previously.

This huge sandstone rock is so named because of the carved stone disk at its top (Fougasse means fouace in Occitan). A channel defines the disk whose diameter is about one meter. A small cup is dug in its center. This is undoubtedly a solar representation associated with a local cult. The stone itself could have served as an altar for animal sacrifices.

But Montségur is also a historical and archaeological museum. You will discover through thousands of exhibits how lived the inhabitants of the castle and castrum in the Middle Ages: tools, hardware, ornaments, weapons, dice to play ...

By visiting the Montségur castle, you will perceive all that emerges from the site when one tries to imagine what could be during the winter 1243-1244 the seat of this citadel of vertigo. How for the 400 people entrenched, the living conditions already austere in normal times, were made even harder by the isolation resulting from this long siege of 10 months or 230 Cathars not wanting to deny their faith chose to die at the stake in cons bottom of the castle on March 16, 1244. Thus sounded the announced end of Catharism.

The municipal camping Birotos located in Pradelles Cabardès in the Aude is the ideal place to stay for hiking or exploring the historical sites of the Cathar country. Direct access to the lake: beach, swimming, relaxing ... 30 locations. Supervised swimming in July and August.
