Situated above the Montvernier lacets, this hexagonal chapel was completed in 1864 (renovated in 1981). Built on a rocky promontory overlooking the valley, it is thought to have replaced an ancient castle. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The interior is largely blue, the color of the Virgin Mary. Although close to the main road, the chapel is only accessible via a footpath. Take advantage of your visit to discover its geological underpinnings: beneath the chapel (a 1-minute walk away), the Hercynian bedrock of the Alps is visible. Consecrated in 1776, this Baroque church is dedicated to two saints invoked for healing. Numerous liturgical and decorative objects are listed as historic monuments. While its bulbous steeple would pass for almost commonplace in the Haute-Savoie or Beaufortain regions, this type of roofing is much rarer in our Maurienne valley. Its altarpiece (with tabernacle), the work of the Gilardi brothers, deserves your attention.

Le Châtel stretches from Hermillon at an altitude of 500 metres to the summit of the Grand Coin (2730 metres). The presence of an ancient Roman road explains why this plateau has long been occupied and dotted with ancient buildings. The cradle of the House of Savoy, the Tour Bérold de Saxe, whose origin remains a mystery, has dominated the Maurienne valley for over 1000 years. Deputy Mayor: Mireille FRUMILLON

The Berold tower is maybe what's left of an old castel. Probably built during the nineth century, the tower is one of the oldest castel of the area. A 1 km from the village the view from the site his really nice. Don't hesitate to stop in this place full of legend and history. It's a square building, 14.5 metres on each side, with walls some twenty metres high. Destroyed by the Saracens in the 10th century, the tower is believed to have been renovated by the mythical Bérold de Saxe, ancestor of the first Count of Maurienne and founder of the House of Savoy: Humbert aux blanches mains. History is not very explicit about him, but we do know that he was not a descendant of Bérold, but of the royal family of Burgundy, and thanks to his support of King CONRAD II, he was given the counties of Maurienne and Savoie. He settled in Le Châtel and died in 1048. He is buried in the newly built cathedral of Saint Jean de Maurienne. Subsequently, the Tour had a quieter history. Abandoned in the 17th century, it was renovated in 1828 by Charles Félix. During the liberation of Savoie in 1944, it was occupied by the Germans, who even held hostages there. It was not liberated until August 30, 1944. Various legends are still told about the village. There is talk of a vault containing vases filled with a delicious liqueur, and above all of a secret passage several kilometers long through the rock to the Tour de la Fournache. The building is a listed historic monument. A church (now desecrated) and a chapel dedicated to St Marin are built on the same promontory.

Built in 1450 between the canons' refectory and the cathedral, it is a fine example of Gothic art. To access it, enter the Cathedral and, on the left, you'll find a wooden door opening onto the cloister. In summer, its magnificent garden receives a lot of red roses and the tranquillity which reigns make it an ideal place for rest or reading.

This crypt, where Romanesque art was born, was abandoned in the 15th century. Rediscovered in 1958, it is only accessible during guided tours offered by the Montagnicimes Tourist Office.

Built in the 6th century, rebuilt in the 11th and enlarged in the 15th, the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste features magnificent Gothic walnut choir stalls, all different from one another, as well as a cloister and crypt. Its neo-classical porch was added in 1771 to house the tombs of three of the first princes of the House of Savoy: Humbert aux Blanches Mains (the founder), Amédée "la Queue" and Boniface "le Roland".

This 11th century tower was the bell tower of the Notre-Dame church. In the 15th century, a very large spire at almost 80 meters adorned the bell tower. This part was destroyed by the French revolutionaries in 1794 Part of the Notre-Dame church was damaged during the destruction of its bell tower. The destruction is still visible on the east face. They are now separated by a street. Its condition does not allow it to be opened to the public, however it occasionally hosts exhibitions visible from the windows located at the bottom.

The refuge is located in the Belleville valley, in a small unspoilt valley at an altitude of 2035 m, on the edge of a lake. Johnathan, Marie and their team welcome you in a friendly atmosphere and serve quality 100% organic and/or local cuisine. The refuge has 4 dormitories: 2 for 6 people, 1 for 8 people and 1 for 5 people. Nestled at an altitude of 2035 m, this pretty mountain refuge is located in the heart of the unspoilt Lac du Lou valley. Jonathan and Marie welcome you for a night in the heart of the mountains, for lunch or a gourmet break during the day, where you'll enjoy committed, organic and local cuisine. The Gîte de l'Oule is a cosy little mountain refuge. Overlooked by the Puy Gris and the Col du Morétan, with a breathtaking view over the Chambéry valley, you can enjoy a blueberry tart or an omelette at any time of day. Getting there : From the car park, take in front of you a wide path (yellow and blue markings), follow it to a fork in the road and turn left. Go up the meadow of L’Oule along the stream. After 1500 m, leave the path up to the Col de Vay and turn right. It then goes over the waterfall to the left. Cross the concrete bridge to reach the ledge of the Oule (1720 m). Continue on your left, you’ll see the hut and you will reach it with a final short climb. Chalet d'la Croë offers you a unique experience: sleeping in a tent at the foot of the Aiguilles d'Arves. There are 2 possibilities: - rent a pitch on your own and bring your own equipment - occupy one of the 3 fully-equipped tents (mattress and comforter) Mountain guide Virginie welcomes you to her summer garden at Chalet d'la Croë*, where you can spend cool, unusual nights camping at the foot of the Aiguilles d'Arves. There are two ways to do this: - rent a single pitch and bring your own camping equipment - rent a pitch with your own tent, mattress, comforter and blankets. Beware: at 2000 m altitude, nights are chilly. On-site chickens, goats, dogs and sometimes cows! There's a toilet block outside, as well as dry toilets and a drinking water point. Crocs are also available. To save water, showers are only available for two-day stays. You'll also have the chance to sample the chalet's typical Savoyard recipes, made with local produce (evening reservations required). No credit cards. * small in Savoyard dialect
