The route from Philippeville to Mariembourg passes through villages typical of the Fenland region of Namur, notably Samart and Roly with its imposing castle-farm. The pretty local stone houses will leave you spellbound. Between oak forests and rolling meadows, you’ll wander along paths dotted with small nature reserves. Near the ruins of Dourbes castle, you’ll reach the Viroin, a wild river that marks the natural border between the Fen and Ardenne regions.

You leave Sautour through the forest, before reaching Roly and its pretty houses made from local stone. Roly and Sautour boast postcard-ready landscapes and are typical villages of the Namur Fens region, located among oak forests, meadows and trees. After admiring the castle farm, which is listed as Medieval heritage, you continue on the path towards Fagnolle and Dourbes. A nature reserve spans more than 200 hectares to the south and west of Dourbes. It comprises two major Walloon limestone sites: the Montagne-aux-Buis and the Roche à Lomme, two imposing hills that dominate the Eau Blanche valley. It is in this valley that the Viroin river is born, at the confluence of the Eau Blanche and Eau Noire rivers. You weave around the Viroin river until you reach Vierves-sur-Viroin, one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia’, and its stunning castle belonging to the Counts of Hamal, which is known for its unique architecture.   

Starting at the church Saint Martin of Senzeilles, this is a walk between paths and woods. You'll be able to discover the Beauchâteau marble quarry; the ancient tunnel that bats use as a refuge; and a magnificent view over the castle of Senzeilles, which is filled with History. Starting at the church Saint Martin in Senzeilles, this walk, which means "Mine trek", goes through the villages of Soumoy and Villers-deux-Églises. You'll trek over both track and stone path, as well as the Wood of Soumoy. Trek n°11 on our map 'Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure'. Follow the green cross markings - 15km

The route passes through the Florennes National Forest, then the municipal forest of Villers-le-Gambon, and, finally, a portion of a private forest. The forest primarily comprises an old grove of ancient oak trees, which has been rejuvenated by various leafy or coniferous plantings. Florennes National Forest was selected as a Natura 2000 site. The black woodpecker and the middle spotted woodpecker live side by side with deer and wild boar. Various species of dragonfly, butterfly, birds and mammals have also sought refuge in the forest and its sun-soaked borders. There are also blankets of orchids here in June for you to view with pleasure. Picking is forbidden, in order to preserve this special flower.

You’ll reach Walcourt, a mediaeval town built on a hill, through the points-noeuds network. At the top is the Saint Materne Basilica, a real architectural gem whose characteristic bulb-shaped bell can be seen from miles around. In Philippeville, the underground built by Vauban will impress you with its mine and countermine galleries. Stop to quench your thirst at the Eaux Vives brewery in Romerée with their 100% organic beers that have fun and original names. Pass through the village of Treignes and its five museums. Not to mention the breath-taking landscapes of the Viroin-Hermeton Nature Reserve and the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse National Park.     

In 1656, Vauban, a military engineer under Louis XIV, made all the changes to the Philippeville Fortress. He developed its defences and emphasised the site’s star shape. Part of the underground network still remains from these works. Precisely ten kilometres, of which 400 metres can be visited. There are galleries located 10 or even 15 metres deep which are two metres wide. Entirely built by hand from the region’s stone, they have rounded ceilings. In practice, they connected the guard posts outside the main building in the Philippeville stronghold. Before the guided tour (around 1km), visitors will see a film that relates the story of the region, the city and the underground galleries.

1555, Mariembourg, a city of Charles V, fell into French hands, opening up a way through the defences of the Empire. But what did the Emperor care! In three months, Philippeville, named after his son, was built and surrounded by ramparts.

This monument, built to honour Saint Peter, patron saint of the village of Villers-deux-Églises, was erected in thanks for the protection the village received during the Second World War. It was inaugurated on the 24th October 1946. Sculpted by H. Brognon, it's made out of French limestone. Its pedestal is made out of marble from the Traigneau quarry just outside Villers.

In Saint Peter's Church in Villers-deux-Églises, there is a special model. It was built by citizens to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Belgium's independance. On this occasion, it was marched on a cart around the whole village. Renovated in 2024, it's once again visible inside the church.

This red marble quarry has been in operation since the 18th century and until 1950. This site, graded since 1992, is beloved by those who like speleology, since the depths of the quarry were flooded.

The present church was built in the 19th century in a neo-gothic style to be true to the old church. Saint Martin had three churches built in his name here in Senzeilles: one was destroyed by a fire in 1835 then rebuilt until 1839; one was demolished because it was too small for the growing parish; and new one that was finished in 1870. Both bells, dating back 1923, were taken by the Germans in 1944, taken back and blessed again in 1947. The rooster-shaped lightning rod was reinstalled 1993.

At the entrance of the Castle of Senzeilles, you will find a plaque in honour of Simone Gerhebaye-Lehouck, a great historical figure of Cerfontaine. A big figure of the local Resistance, a prisoner of war during World War II, Mrs Gerhebaye-Lehouck was also mayor of Senzeilles for more than 30 years. Furthermore, she was one of the first female Senators of Belgium. Another plaque, in honour of her husband, Julien Lehouck, who died in captivity, was unveiled in June 2025.

Around 1000, a castle already existed here. At the time, it was composed of a big dungeon and, later, had three 'pepperpot' towers (called thus because of the shape of the roofs). Today, there are two towers left. Modified throughout the centuries, it once belonged to the Gerbehaye-Lehouck family, who hid a Jewish family in their home before helping them escape into free country; and then used the cellars and many underground tunnels to smuggle food and materials to the resistance hidden in the nearby woods.
