What are the oldest European monuments? No doubt the Dolmens and Menhirs, the emblematic "monuments" of the Megalithic era. They were the work of the earliest farmers and breeders living in Neolithic Europe, the last prehistoric period.

A 6.8 km trail leaving from the Joyeuse tourist information office and taking in the hills between Joyeuse and Côte du Freyssinet.

A historical and botanical discovery trail. Discover the Chastelas (old medieval castle), its history, legends and natural resources.

In a setting with oak trees mainly predominating, the hiking trail leads up to the highest point of the Serre mountain, at an altitude of 549 metres, providing some truly exceptional views.

On the first slopes of the Cévennes, the hamlets and houses of Ribes are spread along “faïsses” or terraces, home to vines and olive trees. P - Turn left opposite the signpost. Follow the tarmac road for a few metres and turn right onto a dirt track, then turn left down the steps to the Alune stream. Cross the stream at a ford, turn right and walk along the river until you reach a small submersible bridge where you can cross back over the stream. Twenty metres after the bridge, turn right onto a path that leads up to the village through chestnut trees and vineyards. When you reach the tarmac road, turn left to leave the hamlet. Before the bridge, turn right between the houses and go up to the street. Turn left to Mas de Laffont.   Mas de Laffont - Follow Prades 2,6 km, Ribes 0,6 km. Pass the Flaüts fountain and then take the tarmac road to the right. At the hairpin bend, turn right. After a bend, pass the rubbish collection point, take a path on the left that climbs between the vines.  Cross over the tarmac road and take the steps between the houses up to the church in the middle of Ribes.  Ribes - Follow Prades 2 km, Saint André Lachamp 6,9 km. When you reach the first houses, turn left to take a small alley in the hamlet of Les Clots. Take the tarmac road at the hairpin bend. Take the road to the left that goes up to Le Serre.  Le Serre - Follow Prades 1,4 km. The road winds upwards to the last houses. The trail continues via steps on the side of the mountain and then curves right. As you begin to descend, ignore the track to your left and continue along the path. After descending, join the track, and go left until you get to Prades.   Prades - Follow Info Rando 2,7 km, Ribes 1,6 km. Continue along the path on the right. About 100m further on, take the path that leads to the hamlet of Labeaume. Pass through the entire hamlet then carry on until you reach the hamlet of Le Gelly via the tarmac road.   Le Gelly - Follow Info rando 1,2 km, Joyeuse 4,5 km. Take the road and at the first crossroads, go right. Continue straight on until you’re level with a stone cross. After a chestnut grove, at the stone cross, leave the road via a “calade” or stone path down to Le Prat.  Le Prat - Follow Info rando 0,6 km. At the crossroads, go down the steps on the left and follow the path that brings you back to the multi-purpose hall.  

This beautiful hike will introduce you to Beaumont’s natural heritage via a botanical trail. You’ll cross open landscapes with beautiful views and pass through shady woodland too. P - Cross the Pont du Gua and take the road left for 100 metres. The path starts at the edge of the road on the right, and follows the Tour du Tanargue GRP ().   Colobrouze. The path climbs in a zig zag up to La Roche ().   La Roche. Follow the path to Clément.   Clément. Leave the GPR and take a path on your left () past a wall. The path continues and then descends. Cross several streams and fairly dense woodland, then climb up to Flacouze (N.B. on your right as you climb, you’ll see a beautiful spring).  Flacouze. Take the road. After several bends, take the path on the left after the fire reservoir to Bisourne.   Bisourne. Follow the road to get back to your starting point.

As early as the Middle Ages, the Alune River was used to turn numerous mills for the region’s inhabitants. There are still four mills along the trail that used the water held back in a “sluice”.

Largentière was named after "Argentaria", the silver mining area. It was founded in the11th cent. The 12th century is a period of great development thanks to Emporor Conrad who allowed to town to issue coins. The town It was founded in the 11th century. The Counts of Toulouse, the Bishops of Viviers, and the Lords of Anduze, Poitiers and Balazuc owned the silver mines. In the 12th century, this medieval city retained great cultural and economic development thanks to Emperor Conrad who granted them the right to mint coins. In 1208, Largentière was placed under the authority of the Counts of Toulouse who succeeded the Bishops of Viviers. In 1730, Bishop François Renaud de Villeneuve sold the castle and the Barony of Largentière to the Marquis François de Beauvoir du Roure de Brison. In the 1830s the silk industry reached its peak, and silkmills flourished all around. Take time to explore this medieval city whilst wandering through the picturesque streets. You will discover the sandstone facades, the arcades, the mullioned windows and beautiful ancient doors. The castle overlooks the town. In 1716 the Bishop of Viviers sold it to the Count of Brison who decided to renovate the building in order to make it more comfortable. In the middle of the castle, the square dungeon also known as Bastide de Bonnegarde was built in the 12th century. It was left intact during the Revolution, and it became a Court of justice and a prison, and a local hospital later on. Notre Dame des Pomiers church (from the latin “pomerium” which means “limit”) was built between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century. It was extended in the 15th and 19th century. Inside Roman influences can be seen, such as a 13th century sarcophagus and a 15th century pulpit. An interesting detail: there lies the skull of the Count of Saillans who fought against the revolutionaries and was beheaded in 1792. The stairs of the Montée Mazon, which lead to the church, were built of stone from the remparts in 1888. The 16th century Recollets city gate is part of the medieval ramparts as well as the bridge over the river Ligne. They are both well preserved. From the bridge, you can see the canal, which would have brought water to the city shops, as well as the 19th century Court of justice, on the hill opposite, which looks much like a Greek temple. Don't miss the town hall: the back of this building is typically Renaissance.

The old village of Balazuc's blue stones grip the heady cliff face overlooking the river. What makes the village magical are its cobbles, steep lanes and squares surrounded by fig trees. This "village of character", also one of the "most beautiful villages of France" is discovered on foot through its maze of shaded narrow streets. To preserve the heart of the village, parking is available on either side of the town. A maze of streets : The charm of the village lies partially in its narrow steep stone-paved streets discovered through the meanderings of the pedestrian. A glance upwards reveals the beautiful remains of its past history: chutes, trefoil windows, rainspouts, pointed arch doors and vaulted passageways. - From the rue de la Tour carrée to la Calade. - From la Calade to the Trouée de la Fachinière. Quartier du Pont : Also called the mercadio quarter or egg market, in reference to the market held since the Middle Ages outside the village walls, the bridge district features a few facades from the 15th century. Before the construction of the bridge, a ferry was used to cross the river. On the right bank we can see the remains of the landing stage.

This dolmen on the top of the hill Ranc de Guilhaumet (336 metres high), right in the middle of the typical garrigue, is also called « the Giant’s tomb ». Long ago, people used to believe that dolmens were built by giants, fairies or elves. The chamber of this collective tomb from the Neolithic times, has a trapezoidal shape, with 3 metre long limestones. It was probably co-vered by a table stone. The whole tomb is protected by a pile of stones, 20 metres in diameter, known as a tumulus. The tomb was probably meant to be seen in the distance.

The river la Lande runs through the commune of Uzer, flowing for around twenty kilometres into the Ligne tributary of the Ardèche. The banks of the Lande à Uzer are classified as a Natura 2000 area, as they are home to a number of habitats and species representative of European biodiversity. A number of built heritage features can be seen along the Lande, including - bridges - a viaduct which until the 1980s housed a railway line - sautes, dykes or "levees" topped with large stones to allow pedestrians to cross the river. Half a dozen of these in Uzer, used to supply crops, vegetable gardens, etc., have been damaged by bad weather. The one in the lower village was restored in July 2016. - water retention basins to supply the gardens.

Only 5 km from Largentière, on the way from Aubenas to les Vans, this pleasant village used to be located on an ancient roman road. The Chalendar castle, in the village center, has been transformed into a 4 star guesthouse. Kate Ladner and Nicholas Todorovic, the owners of the medieval house “la Bastide d'Uzer” up on the hill, often give opera concerts at their home. East of the village, in the “garrigue”, are some Gallo-roman graves and megalithic tombs have also been discovered. From the Ranc de Guillaumet Dolmen you get a very nice view of the Ligne and Lande rivers. You will be able to appreciate the village, once famous for brick and roof tile factories, by walking through the old streets. Key dates: Concerts at The Bastide. The Cirque de Gens is natural wonder in the Ardèche. It's a great place to walk, swim and one of the biggest climbing sites in the Ardèche (320 routes).
