Exceptional discovery of Vigeois, Corrèze, Limousin

The GR®46 long-distance hiking trail links Tours to Toulouse over a total distance of 945 km. In Corrèze, the 150 km route leads from Lacelle in the north, in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional de Millevaches, to Turenne, one of France's most beautiful villages, with its superb castle perched on a rocky promontory offering 360° panoramic views over the Causse and Quercy landscapes. Along the way, you'll discover Treignac, a Petite Cité de Caractère nestled in the Massif des Monédières, and also Uzerche, labelled "Plus Beau Détour de France", otherwise known as La Perle du Limousin with its rich heritage. You don't have a car, or you're looking for an eco-responsible holiday? The entire itinerary can be completed from the stations at Lacelle, Uzerche, Vigeois, Estivaux, Allassac and Turenne.

The circuit starts around the couade and the church of Troche, and then leads through bucolic countryside dotted with viewpoints and watering holes. As the name suggests, you'll have the opportunity to cross the Gavassou stream on the bridge at Les Farges and Chanterane. The 9.5 km route is marked out in green (no. 10), and at the end you can follow the 8 km extension in red, for a total of 18 km. Easily accessible trails and tracks, very few roads.

After setting off from Place de la République, near the town hall, and passing by the viewpoint indicator facing the Monédières mountains, you can admire the Couade, the town's emblem, enthroned on the well near the church. Wooded, shady paths lead you to the Rechèze pond and the Chartreuse du Glandier, which you overlook as you climb towards the village of Grange Vieille.

From the reception area of the small station, the marked path through the Garenne du Puy Grolier leads to the old card factories. Once you have crossed the bridge over the Vézère, the scenery of greenery and water continues on the other bank. The tour continues along the rue de l'abreuvoir which climbs towards the old town. Then you cross the Vézère again by the Turgot Bridge to get back to the starting point. The route is punctuated by panels relating the life and work of Simone De Beauvoir, philosopher and writer (1908-1986), winner of the 1954 Goncourt Prize, who spent part of her childhood holidays close by. Follow the life and work of Simone de Beauvoir as you stroll along the paths along the Vézère. Along the way, you'll discover the old spinning mills of the pearl of the Limousin. This tour takes you back in time, as you follow the former route of the "Paris Orléans Corrèze" railroad. It's a rolling route with little gradient, suitable for the whole family. On a hill on the left bank of the Vézère river, the houses of this charming little town cling together. The Vigeois abbey church, built in the 12th century, boasts a splendid series of sculpted capitals of great iconographic interest. In the schoolyard, the thousand-year-old Yew tree has been designated a Remarkable Tree of France. The 15-hectare Lac de Pontcharal is 2km from the village.

The Old Bridge, also known as the "Pont des Anglais", spans the Vézère at a former ford. Although the date of its construction remains uncertain, its features appear to predate the 14th century. With a length of 45 metres, it is made up of 4 thick arches alternating with almond-shaped headers on the upstream side and flat buttresses on the downstream side. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1969.

1400 years old... That's the age of this Yew tree, said to have been planted when the abbey was founded in the 6th century... This makes it the oldest tree in Limousin. With its short, wide trunk and spreading branches, the Vigeois Yew offers a small "inner garden" in the hollow of its branches, where you can observe young green shoots, red bark and the little creatures that make the most of this calm, serene environment... The abbey church of Vigeois is one of the most precious examples of Romanesque art and architecture in the Lower Limousin. Built between 1082 and 1121, this monument lived through the hardships of the medieval period (looting, attacks and fires). The monastery?s history is documented in the precious chronicles written by the monk Geoffroy de Breuil, prior of Vigeois, from 1170 to 1184. Several attacks resulted in the complete disappearance of the nave, which was rebuilt in a neo-Romanesque style between 1866 and 1868. The building was listed as a Monument Historique on July 12, 1886.

In the south of the commune of Saint Ybard, this is a natural site where you can relax and enjoy a picnic. From the parking lot, take the left-hand path down to the log bridges and stairs. The site is also the starting point for a 7 km hike that takes in the old forges and the famous Gour Noir viaduct. Free admission.
